Such a fucking meme
I understand WHY people think it's good. It's the latest version of Sega's excellent 6-button controller, it has shoulder buttons, and it has a very ergonomic shape for a controller without 3D grips.
HOWEVER, the d-pad, buttons, and button-spacing are so much better and feel so much higher-quality on a Sega Genesis 6-Button Arcade Pad. The Saturn controller is loose in all areas, the thing fucking rattles, and the dpad is mushier than the older controller. The older 6-button is a far superior controller for anything that doesn't need the extra buttons.
Is the Saturn controller better than most controllers for 2D games? Sure. But it's NOT the best.

These reproductions are shit. Either get the 8bitdo recreation or get a real 90s era Saturn controller.

Someone told me the originals basically have the same problems I have. Rattly, cheap-feeling, again the button-spacing is better on Genesis pads and I doubt that's different

My 8bitdo feels solid compared to the official Sega saturn reproduction I had in like 2011.
Other than that I don't know

the saturn as a whole is a meme forced by hipsters

I was kinda excited for the Retro-Bit controller but they completely shat the fucking bed on its final design. It's worse for the Saturn than its original controllers.

Yeah, controllers do this. The buttons are keyed and held in place with those keys. Looser fitting buttons aren't going to impede performance at all. It means they're less prone to built up dirt.
>the dpad is mushier than the older controller
Because it's for low strain. Want an uncomfortable d-pad? Dreamcast is right there.

The d-pad design should've become the basis of any controller released after it, it's easily the best first party for both internals and externals
The face button layout is definitely a meme

I agree but it's based on the Genesis 6-Button Arcade Pad's dpad. Which was better.

God they cheaped out hard on the sticks and triggers
They also fucking hardwired the C and Z to R1 and L1 instead of maybe fucking putting some of the stick clicks on the triggers or at least making it programmable

I'm guessing what happened is they decided they wanted hall effect sticks later on in the prototyping, the most readily available hall effect analog sticks are mini-sticks intended for Switch joycons, and they shitcanned basically everything to redesign the controller around the mini-sticks. Between that, the lack of analog triggers on the final controller, and that Retrobit in general has pretty crap build quality.

It has a decent shmup library. Everything else was done better by other consoles. Imagine being Sega and releasing a console without a Sonic game, what a fucking blunder. N64 had better platformers, PS1 also had better platformers and also had better JRPGs. PS1 also had a lot of the shmups the Saturn had. I think Saturn had Batsugun exclusively so that's a plus. DoDonPachi is on both systems.

How do you map these on modern games? Do you just go with a fighting game layout where ABXY are the face buttons and Z C are L/R or LT/RT or do you do something else?
>>
>>720022265
On Street Fighter you'd have top row be punches and bottom row be kicks, or the other way around if you want. On games that use less buttons you can do whatever you want.
>>
>>720022154
It's likely the size and positioning. Most symmetrical controllers use shorter sticks than asymmetrical to compensate the sticks being closer together. The prototype design had full size sticks closer together than a DS1.

Having optical disks, but a battery save system, pretty much killed it for anything but arcade games and other low-data games. Imagine spending 40 hours on shining force, needing to replace the battery, and realizing once you did that all of your saves are erased.
Of all the things the saturn did wrong, that + deliberately hiding the existence of ram carts in the west, was one of the most retarded things sega's ever done in a long and derpy history.
