Why don't indie devs support each other?

>>720030330he is just so bad at any game that requires the slightest mechanical skill
I don't know what was his critique, but knowing him I suspect Jonathan Blow likes designing games in the way an engineer might look for a solution to a problem, optimizing stuff, looking for ways to minimize, reutilize, etc. The fact that he's working particularly on a game is circumstantial.Hollow Knight is a game made by people who like playing video games, for people who like playing video games. It has shit that exists merely because it's fun or cool. It's a different approach. I don't think one is superior to the other. If I may, I'd like to compare it to vehicle engineering. You might have a firm that will try to maximize output given a certain set of criteria. They want the highest practical lateral Gs when taking a turn or whatever, something like the McMurtry Spéirling. And you have another brand that just wants to make fun shit, something like TVR cars. Stick a big engine with lots of power, no electronic aids, good luck and you'll probably kill yourself btw.Maybe I should have used a food analogy. One is a cook that uses molecular gastronomy while the other just wants to make the juiciest most flavorful burger or pasta.
jonathan blow is notoriously retarded, this has been known for over a decade
>>720030682Okay but Blow's games are bad.
>>720030330Jonathan Blow hates anything not made by Jonathan Blow, so that's hardly a surprise.

>>720030805He likes Zachtronics games.
>>720030350his reviews are always hilarious because it's the same complaints every time, and he's been going at them for nearly a decade now
I didn’t watch the video, what was his complaint?
>>720030330>>720030350>>720030679>can't tell he's trolling
When is this fag making a new game?
>>720031517>trolling for nearly 2 decadestruly the andy kaufman of gamedevs
>>720031558He is probably inventing a brand new programming language to write a brand new engine in first
>>720031558He's making 2 right now, Sokoban and a secret game.
>>720030330WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP
>>720030330Hollow Knight doesn't have going back in time potion. You play as some lame little edgelord skeleton guy, some 13 year old kid's terrible gay minimalist deviantart OC instead of something cool like... I don't know, Mario from the future in a business suit. Hollow Knight also has tons of artificial difficulty. You can't just pick up and play it. It's not accessible, if you like to smoke weed and get high, or drink liquor and get drunk, get fucked up, you probably won't like it, it'll be too hard to play. And you don't have back in time potion if you die.
>>720031676You sound like the kind of guy who spends years creating a custom engine just to make essentially a sokoban clone. that ends up at nothing btw.
>>720031517He should stop then, it just makes he look like a massive retard.
>>720030330Isn't this guy a fucking piety bitch who spent 10 years crying about souljaboy playing his game?
>>720031662Oh boy, I love pushing boxes.
>>720031990He was talking about game journalists not getting his game, it was edited to make it funnier.
>>720030330Why is he living in some brazilian moldy prison?
>>720032137>He was talking about game journalists not getting his gameThat's even worse. He was complaining about game journalists who LIKED his game but didn't like it for the reasons he wanted them to like it.
>>720030679>>720030756>>720030770Being immersed in a world or lost in the moment is impossible for an autist of his flavour, but a staple of normie gamer enjoyment. If he can't define whatever he is doing as 'making progress' he will often define it as 'bad game design' and unfortunately he will do this both in legit cases AND when he is just too fucking stupid to connect-the-dots and make progress.

>>720030350>playing on keyboardDo pc troons really?
>>720031517He's a programmer before he's a gamer. From what I've seen, he doesn't really seem to enjoy video games. He enjoys puzzles, programming, and art. He makes the same sorts of complaints with most games he plays.
>>720032625>If he can't define whatever he is doing as 'making progress' he will often define it as 'bad game design'Very true. As I stated in my previous post, he doesn't really seem to enjoy "games" that much. Anything requiring immersion, exploration, or experimentation, he views negatively. He seems to strongly enjoy games with clear-cut objectives, however, even if the objectives require deep analysis of the scenario you're in, and heavy cognition. Very interesting individual.
>>720030350
>>720030350He'd probably unironically love mobile games. No exaggeration. The dude hates open-ended design. Give him a clicker game with a clear goal, "click X object, earn 100 credits, unlock new tool, click Y object, earn 200 credits, etc", and he'd easily become fully enamored.
>>720033786i don;t know how it works for bugknight but it's most effective way to play precision platformers, most rhythm games, bullet hells, tetris
Braid sucks mad cock
Why they call him Johnathan Blow? Does he prefer boys?
Why do autists hate immersive games so much? Are they incapable of pretending to live in fantasy?Does everything need to be rigid, logical, and explicit with them?Give an autist an open world game, and they very frequently become overwhelmed by the lack of structure. Then they'll complain about a lack of direction, time requirements for optimization, and quit. Meanwhile, give them a hyper-linear game that they can repetitively grind, with explicit instructions for each task, and they'll dump 1,000 hours into them. What's the cause of this?
>>72003035015:50Pure DSP vibes lmao
No idea who that’s supposed to be but I just uninstalled the game after 30 minutes of boredom
>>720034212The smarter you are, the easier it is to see the model. Once you see the model you're engaging with it's hard to forget and immerse yourself. Happened to me with reality. I have to actively distract myself to engage with people. Otherwise I sit there noticing that my hands and feet are moving without any conscious direction from my brain. That my thoughts aren't my thoughts. They're simply weather that arises in my head. Hell it's not even my head. Then there's the trippy part of not being able to tell where my body ends and the world begins. I'm not even sure why I'm typing this. I'm like a fucking recorded message that parrots things that people put in my head. There is no free will and we're all automatons.
>>720032742>>720033853if he praised the games he played then it would be boring and he knows it. shitting on games even though you know they're good is more entertaining.
Not gonna lie, this very much echoes my experience with Hollow Knight, Super Metroid, SotN etcI don't think it's a matter of the games being poorly designed though, I think the games are set up in such a way where they assume the player is really into the world and atmosphere, so he's gonna enjoy wandering around looking for paths and trying a bunch of random actions like bombing every corner of the environment until something clicks. If the player isn't that into it then it just comes across as obtuse bullshit, but that's not who the game is made for
>>720034212>autistic and having no escapist mindset That has to be an oxymoron.
>>720034963Bro I think you're just really fucking stupid. These games engage basic pattern recognition and problem solving. You're not supposed to just smack every single surface. You're supposed to go "why is there a wall here?"
Quick, name 10 games that Jonathan Blow likes.

I picked up HK after the Silksong hype and just got bored and stopped a little bit after beating the girl bug from Silksong, it’s just kinda boring to me the moveset feels super limited and the game is kinda easy so far I never died
>>720030330Why would you “support” other devs? Why do you cunts have to make everything tribalism, I blame unions for this shit
>>720030682I dunno, I think a lot of people just hate Zelda 2 and it’s one of my favourite games, so HK is perfect for people that like physics based action
>>720034963Low spatial reasoning makes the game difficult and not fun for a lot of people I think
>>720036523>1001 spikes in recommended when he sucks at vidyalul wut?
>>720036769>Community BADThen stop wasting my tax dollars and go live in the woods.
>>720030330Blow is a genius, actually. I dropped HK also. It's design is at odds with itself. Maybe some people like a heavy combat focus in a metroidvania but I found it repetitive. Losing your money when you die is a souls mechanic. Feels bizarre in a game that is supposed to be about exploration. Makes the exploration risky and dread-inducing. Frustrating but neat indie game It's hype is... Idk people that only just discovered the genre.
>>720030330I didn't like Hollow Knight either. I can tell its well crafted, but it wasn't for me. Not everyone has to like the same things you do.
>>720030330"Indie" is from "Independent". That's not a bunch of circlejerk fags under one publisher. Other indies are your competitors and basically enemies, they aren't your friends. You compete with them, at best they are your rivals.
>>720032625He's a game developer. He probably spends all of his time playing games analyzing the mechanics, how they're implemented, and how he would have handled them. He probably isn't even able to see the game as a living world because he knows everything that went in to making it that way.He probably just thinks its more shallow than it lets on because some kind of autism doesn't allow him to appreciate it for what it is.
>>720037129>Blow is a genius, actually. He sounds like a fucking moron in all things but engineering.

>>720030330He's unfortunately terrible at games and anytime he experiences frustration he launches into some pretentious diatribe about how badly designed it is. It's pretty clear that he's just emotional and using his 'authority' as 'auteur guy' to punch down to make himself feel better. Don't forget he demanded that the rage compilations of him playing pubg be taken down, because it's obvious in those that he's just mad and can't mask it as some kind of criticism of the game to maintain a veneer of control over himself. All of which is ironic if you listen to his advice about dealing with depression because he says he basically just locks in and knows the feelings go away after awhile. Homie needs therapy stat.
>>720031662Void stronger stole the thunder for His sokoban game so hard
>>720037402Pattern recognition, problem solving, abstract reasoning etc approach 1:1 correlation with spatial reasoning. It's virtually impossible to have poor spatial reasoning and be a high performer in these other clusters.>>720037414Sure, there's no canonical definition of intelligence. But you specifically brought up pattern recognition and problem solving, which are addressed pretty directly by something like an IQ test. What you're describing is a problem of disposition, not intelligence, which is closer to what I initially described
>>720037253Playing Braid is a fun brain twister but designing Braid was a flex on his part. That's where I got the hunch he was a genius from, then I followed him and he was making comments about multiple /g/ topics years before everyone else he just seemed really smart to me.Genius level people are hated and misunderstood by society. Even on here it's always the same "Blow is retarded" posts every time. Seems like /b/poster ego makes them uncomfortable with the idea of smart people. Guys like Chris Langan who has the highest IQ Everyone gets their panties in a twist and get uncomfortable and attack him when he's just chilling trying to explain reality to the best of his ability. Totally disrespected and cancelled and dragged thru the mudI'm just comfortable with the idea of geniuses out there. NO HES RETARDED ACTUALLY he's out there designing engines and puzzles He doesn't like the indie Metroid-type that slapped trendy souls mechanics in, thoughtlessly I'm not surprised. I didn't like it either.
>>720030350Should people who are bad at video games make video games?

>>720037129>Losing your money when you die is a souls mechanicDIABLO, YOU FUCKING ZOOMER
>>720037789 Unironically true. Sokoban-likes are dime a dozen now but Void Stranger actually *committed* to the format. Blow’s game was just a glorified proof of concept that got mogged the moment someone with better gamefeel and less need for TED talk flare showed up. All the discourse around his puzzles being “deep” kinda collapsed once people realized half the difficulty came from his oblique-ass writing and refusal to communicate rules clearly. Void Stranger just lets the gameplay breathe without all the meta wank.

>>720036720Of course the moveset is super limited, the whole point is that you unlock abilities as the game progresses
>>720037853>All this huffing and puffing and copingI literally said he's good at engineering.Intelligence isn't some numerical, all encompassing attribute you can put in a jar. Plenty of people are geniuses in exactly one thing and completely hopeless in everything else.I'm glad defending him makes you feel better about yourself by proxy, giving you an opportunity to place yourself above anyone who criticizes the various retarded things he says and posts each week, but the projection is a bit much.

Even if the food offered to you is good, you're already satisfied. No desire.>>720034590Metroidvanias in general seem to revolve around running around the game world, with no clearly explicit purpose, using your abilities to interact with objects and unlock new abilities, ultimately to achieve ... ???I can see why spontaneous people would enjoy this genre, as there's always something new to explore, but if you're not an innately curious individual, if you have your own priorities that you cling desperately to, the premise just won't interest you enough to keep your attention. Too vague. Be more specific, please.People like him, and to an extent, you, require a strong sense of purpose. I think this is why Blow struggles so much with open-ended games.Tell him exactly what he needs to do, and he'll do it. Otherwise, he'll find the interaction meaningless, and look for something else to invest his energy into. He'd probably be a great investor.

>>720037991I played Diablo 1 on disc, not a zoomer. I don't think it invented dropping money or souls or blood or whatever. Maybe it did. But hollowknoght didn't do it because Diablo did it, they did it because souls did it/made it super trendy.I argue that it works in ShovelKnight because ShovelKnight is a linear platformer so the player will encounter their dropped loot soon anyway. It fails in Hollowknight because if the player dies in a metroidvania, it probably means they should've been in a different part of the map anyway. But now they are once tiviees to go back into the treacherous area over and over to retrieve their losses, only to get weaker in a frustrating vicious cycle. I honestly think it's bad game design. >>720038168Ive played every Metroid. I understand picking routes, taking risks, etc. the mechanics and combat focus of HollowKnight does not work in my opinion. >>720038359It just bothers me seeing geniuses get ripped on, our society is sick. And no I don't buy into the idea that IQ is actually balanced like a videogame and that it's always a tradeoff and nobody is ever really smarter than anyone else That's a equality fantasy downstream from race related IQ censorship. Utopian and childlike thinking. Like a previous poster was explaining, mental processes come in clusters and people who are good at them are good at lots of them. Savants who are only good at one thing are exceptions. Retards are bad at basically everything and the inverse is true of geniuses.>>720037972It's too short to get boring and introduces a new mechanic/puzzle type every chapter. I feel like you got filtered and didn't finish it. I got filtered by HollowKnight. I found it frustrating because I kept thinking about how it's systems were at odds with each other. Maybe some people really don't like Braid and really like HollowKnight. I've played both tho so I'm just giving my opinion.
>>720039046Being fat is not a choice
>>720039046Let's talk about video games :)
>>720030350He's kinda right though. HK has some of the worst level design and most nonsensical progression. Silksong feels much more like Super Metroid in its progression
>>720039098Tell that to Nick Avocado
>>720031517>i-i was only pretending
>>720034097I know a few people who play 2D precision platformers with a controller and they're very good too but I can't see it being more optimal than a keyboard. Maybe if there's a mechanic where there's more than 8 directions i.e Celeste's feather?
i can recognize why people like hollow knight, i think the game is greatbut i just don't enjoy playing itit's a beautiful game with fun mechanics and rewarding exploration, but the premise of the game just doesn't excite mei feel zero urge to continue playing it, despite having felt zero negative emotions while playing itit was just "meh" to me
>>720039152You might just have sold me on playing Silksong, can you elaborate?
>>720038819>I can see why spontaneous people would enjoy this genreNigga Super Metroid is one of the reason speedrunning is a thing at all.Being efficient and finding things quickly is a huge part of a metroidvania. They're not games about getting lost, they're games about finding your way. You're supposed to map out the world and realize the item you picked right now can get you through a completely unrelated obstacle. Which is why people tend bounce off them as picking them back up after a while can be a pain in the ass since your memory of the game is much worse. It's an extremely cerebral genre, not spontaneous at all.
>>720039098ozempic works by making you not want to eat, which makes you lose weight. Imagine that, eating less leads to weight loss, meaning that fat people just have no mental self control. this means that being fat is a mental illness.I've always surmised that fat people should naturally develop a nice personality if they're going to be physically repulsive, but unsurprisingly, most fat people also tend to have extremely unlikable personalities.
>>720039098Choose to eat a salad, fat boy.
>>720039063>I don't buy into the idea that IQ is actually balanced like a videogame and that it's always a tradeoff and nobody is ever really smarter than anyone elseGood thing nobody said that. It's very clear that sucking Blow's chode is propping up your own self worth, but the dude's proven himself to be stupid in more things than he excels at.
>>720039376I wouldn't use speedrunning as an example of a genre not being generally preferred by spontaneous people. Most of the praise I've seen in regards to metroidvanias came from the excitement of discovering secrets, new enemies, new regions, and new tools. These general observations would make sense for spontaneous, or at the very least, immersion-enjoying people to enjoy. If you don't care about immersion, discovery, or exploration, you probably won't enjoy metroidvanias. I really think that's why people bounce off of the genre. Some people simply prefer having explicit goals with linear progression.Speedrunners can discover optimal paths that lead to linear runs, but those aren't the average players. Speedrunners are a super tiny percentage of people who enjoy games.I guess it ultimately depends on the individual. Efficient gamers can still enjoy the genre, but in general, if you don't enjoy immersion and exploration, it won't be for you.Blow is one of those people. He needs clear goals. Not the premise of potentially uncovering something interesting. Exploration in hopes of discovering cool shit feels like a waste of time to people like him.
>>720039696>He needs clear goals.Sounds like he's a fucking moron.
>>720037758>rage compilations of him playing pubgAre those available anywhere? I only see his full playthroughs of it and they're like an hour to 7 hours long.

>>720040447>okay soulja boy
>>720039696>Most of the praise I've seen in regards to metroidvanias came from the excitement of discovering secrets, new enemies, new regions, and new tools.Literally where are you hearing this from? People who enjoy metroidvanias do it because solving the puzzle is gratifying to them and they offer things like sequence breaking which make replaying and mapping much more dynamic. Thr speedrunning aspect arises from that, it's not some sort of challenge people impose on it. The first thing you do after playing a metroidvania you like is replaying it again because you'll do it way, way faster than your first go. It's enjoyable to break games like that.It just sounds like you got filtered by the genre and you think the failure state of being lost is actually the goal. It's not.

>>720030330>Jonathan Blow hated Hollow Knight I didn't know he was that based.
>>720040789Metroid specifically has a history of pushing the player to beat the game as fast as possible.
>>720038297I really wanted more with the amount of progression I’d made. The last games I played like this were Astlibra and Bloodstained and in both I was constantly getting new powers and abilities to play with. In HK I dropped down a joke fight two moles and get “you get a shield when healing”, it’s boring
>>720039295He probably means how at first glance, the game seems linear because the progression flows from left to right on the map. But it is non-linear if you know where to go, and it can throw a few curve balls. But early progression on the main path is simple: clear this area, unlock spear ability, clear next area, unlock sprint and dash, and so on.
>>720040993So you basically didn't get any movement upgrades before you quit in the second real area of the game? Cool.
>>720030350You know what? After seeing some parts of this video, I realize that John Blow didnt want to play HK to begin with. Was it because he thought that he could have designed it better and everything felt annoying to him, or was it because he wanted to do something else with his time? I dont know I guess due to popular demand he eventually had to force himself to play it, so he plays bad and complains about every minute thing not because he sucks as a gamer, but out of spite. He just didnt want to play HK at that time, and the whole thing feels like a painful waste of time to him

>>720030682>It's a different approach. I don't think one is superior to the other.I really disagree with this. If your goal is to make a game, the autism approach of optimizing every single thing simply misses the point. Games are meant to be enjoyed by players. A good game designer understands it's the outcome that matters, which is more than the sum of its parts. How it works under the hood doesn't matter. The autist concentrates on the parts only and not the product. Optimizing shit without a need for optimization is masturbation. It's like solving leetcode problems for their own sake. It's ok if you do it and enjoy it but it's not game design.

>>720030330>Constantly acts high and mighty like he's some game design god>the only games he's made are a simple Mario clone with a time rewind mechanic and pretentious puzzle gameDoes this guy realize he's the epitome of being "at the right place at the right time" and the stuff he made would sell like dogshit if it released today because it's nothing special?
>>720030330Literal who.He made 1 good game and never again managed to break out, even with his now famous name on the product.Meanwhile Silksong is the exact opposite. First game a success, the second game a generational wealth generating success.
>>720030330Jonathan Blow is based.
>>720044150His Braid remaster sold like dogshit too, nobody gives a shit about that shitty game besides pretentious faggots.
>>720039152>HK has some of the worst level design and most nonsensical progression.Playing through HK rn and i agree
Damn, was Redditollow Knight bad all this time?
>>720030330https://youtu.be/gWqnz-7iQbY?si=2XBjQz6vVQfH4hLr
>>720044054they probably designed silksong with the idea that the people playing had played and beaten hollow knight to a competent degree
>>720030682Nothing Jonathon makes could be construed as bloated. Hollow Knight is bloat by definition. If he were to remake the game in his own vision it would be a better experience despite him sucking at games.
That he banned discussion of The Looker in his discord tells me all I need to know.
>>720033337He made a video game for people who like to drink beer and get drunk or smoke weed and get high.
>>720035620I agree with them but I only like Metroid for some reason. The best game is am2r though which has far less back tracking though
>>720045227And may God bless them for it
>>720045582His game is better for this
>>720045582Looks like Mario, from the future
>>720045939LOL I can see it like if Mario had a business suit on
>>720030330it's not a great game and even though blow has autistic nitpicks about things his feedback picks at actual problems
>>720045354Pretty much. You don't get to be artsy if you're too much of a bitch to take a joke.
>>720039205it's absolutely true for celeste feather part at launch, i don't know how it works now. good call.

Most indie devs fucking hate Team Cherry
>>720049040I'm an indie dev and I have no idea what team cherry is. I also don't want to google it. Don't reply to me since I also don't care about you.
The bosses are cool, but goddamn the rest of the game became insufferably tedius from judge location onwards.Devs thought annoying player and wasting his time == hard, i guess.
>>720036875I love Zelda II, but absolutely abhor shallow knight. Zelda II is colorful, concise and doesn't have exploration bloat, shitty lore "rewards" for exploring, and despite be being limited to pixels looks better crafted than the toddler scriblings excuse for characters in your troon bugsouls flashgame trash.
this thread fucking blows
>>720030330who???
what is so good about hollow knight any way? it looks like a bog standard metroidvania which isn't bad necessarily but people talk about it like it revolutionized the genre and went beyond all of its predeccesors
>>720033143And frogposting is tranny-tier. Hasn't stopped you though. I wonder why?
he looks and sounds like this guy
>>720054978sometimes old concept becomes massively popular, see flappy bird and watermelon game
>>720037252I'm an amateur dev who can't help but analyze games I play and Jon Blow is just full of shit. When he gets frustrated he can't take apart what's bothering him and talk about the hitboxes or timing or placement or dozen other things he should be able to pick out. He goes>I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS>THESE MONSTERS JUST MAKE ME MADNo decent dev should fail to hold the button long enough to make a simple jump and go>AAAAA WHAT HAPPENED THERE?
>>720030330Because he isn't just going to support someone for being "indie", if he doesn't like it he'll just say so. It doesn't matter where the game comes from, if it's good it's good, if it's bad it's bad.
>>720038559normal person: this bothers me for these reasonsstudent: noted. I'll fix it.lead by example person: aaaaah this is what happens when i don't get my wayyyyystudent: i don't like that. I'll fix it.
>>720036330BraidThe WitnessBraid: Anniversay Editionuhhhhhhh...
>>720037129>Makes the exploration risky and dread-inducinghave you ever considered that the risky, dread-inducing feeling might be exactly what some people seek?
>>720044054>the game expects you to actually play itGo to cookie clicker tht might be more your speed
>>720044309>He made 1 good gameLmao no he didnt
>>720056968He also made some game prototypes:http://number-none.com/blow/prototypes/index.html
>>720054978It looks so fucking ugly too, I forgot just how ugly it was. Particle effects and glow spammed everywhere. Did not age well at all.
>>720030330Jonathan Blow is severely autistic.
