Post Hidden Gems that have less than 50 reviews. And you have to post the green banner thing that proves you actually own the game only real gamers here.

You have to be one of the 50 players.

50 is actually kind of high compared to most of the stuff I play I usually don't even see them get past ten.

I haven't actually gotten this one yet but I am seriously considering it since it's only $2.50. I did play the demo though and it had a neat segment where you had to play duck hunt to get a key. But there was no dog who laughs at you if you miss the ducks? What is Duck Hunt without the laughing dog?
>>
>>720064795
no, I play plenty of niche stuff, many games I love have <100 or 200 reviews
but they accumulate, a game with 150 reviews from 3 years ago is harder to compare with something that came out a month ago.
more time is more reviews, 50 reviews for a game that came out a while ago is very different.

everything in this thread posted in this thread is very recent, rather than truly being niche.
something being new doesn't necessarily warrant playing or going out of your way to play it.
if you look at it as 50 reviews a year, a game that has been out for 3 years with 100 reviews is far more niche than a game with 14 that came out 3 days ago, or 19 that came out 2 months ago.

new shit with low reviews isn't niche, its just new.
>>
>>720065041
That's fair.
But it's generally impossible to find games with low review counts that are older than a couple of months, because Steam's algorithm is so "great" it basically buries your game if it doesn't make 2 million USD in an hour.

I don't go out of my way to play or look for stuff with low reviews.
if it seems interesting I play it.

I have dozens of games I just found on itch and played that are mid development. I would rather look by genres based on what I feel like playing, who gives a fuck how many reviews it has, good is good.
but its kind of missing the point to post new games with low reviews vs games that have been out of a while to me.

I don't browse the unreal store, so I wouldn't know. I don't see why it matters though. A wall is wall, and I'm not overly picky.

If anything it's the larger games that I've noticed having a strange similarity to eachother. Chronos New Dawn just came out and it looks so generic. Haven't I already seen this whole atmosphere before? Why pay so much for that?

I'll play RPGmaker games if I think they are decent, and those always use stock assets. What's the big deal? Making games is hard. I'm surprised solo devs can make 3D games at all, honestly. Times have changed from when Toy Story needed a million trillion hours to render.

I could probably make toy story these days if I tried.

putting a fucking premade level as your demo is just peak lazyness, I know at least 4 different games that use the same office stage and they are all cheap shit.

I also noticed OP left out the price, why would they ever?
>>
>>720062737
I kind of gave up on finding games like that myself when i realized WAY too many of them are either

- roguelites of some kind
- cheap hentai/weg games often made with AI
- first person horror games where the main mechanic is hiding from some monster
- artsy walk simulators

Im sure im missing dozens of games that i probably would like but steam recs are still kind of trash. I found that often curators are better than the algorithm.

If you want the price I'll show you the price it's not a secret. They gave me 15% off for getting the trilogy. I was pretty amused how heavily the game implies it's a sex game but it's really not like that at all. Or maybe it's an unlockable bonus that I didn't get. Yeah, this is the stench of the algorithm post-2017. Ever since the curator overhaul got half-assed and Steam discovery became a slot machine with extra RNG, it's been harder to surface anything that doesn't fall in those soul-draining categories. I followed like fifteen curators and only three of them haven't gone dormant or turned into asset flip shills. One of them still recommends jank PSX horror games weekly, which is honestly the most consistent goldmine I've found.

Also shoutout to those random Itch.io bundles where you dig through 700 games and occasionally hit something that *almost* feels like a Dreamcast prototype. That's the fix I need.

>Post Hidden Gems that have less than 50 reviews
That really is kind of hard. There are plenty of good games that didn't succeed, but not that many good games that failed so hard that they got fewer than 50 reviews.
I play a lot of niche games, but they're mostly in the 50-200 review range.
I have 4 sub-50 review games in my library. One of which I made.
Not sure they merit posting here.

reviews don't come to the game in a linear fashion, they're done in bursts.
And those bursts also determine if it gets boosted by the algorithm which is self-perpetuating
There's a reason that reviews often scale logarithmically with very little in-between
>tfw the game I want to recommend has barely scraped past the 50 review mark so I now need to look at even more-obscure stuff in my library to participate in the thread
usually people put the bar a little higher (say 500 or 100, for example) and then add lower review thresholds as a "hard mode"

I have Violet in my wishlist. They look like asset store slop, but I like my survival horror. Are they any good?
>>
>>720085408
Well I was playing it but I fucking died and it was kind of annoying because I had been planning on saving but a cutscene played before I could reach the savepoint but I was right there in the same room as the savepoint and then when the cutscene was over I was somewhere else entirely and I didn't make it back to a savepoint so now I have to do it all over but it's not that much time really but I booted up a different game anyway,

Violet is actually the second game in the trilogy. Siren's Well is the game that caught my eye, because of it's soundtrack/demo but I opted to go play the first in the series rather than starting with the last one. It was probably unnecessary though I bet you could play them in any order. The plot is so esoteric and nonsensical I don't really know what is going on but it seems like you were starving to death all along or something but maybe you have an identical twin who died at birth? I don't know.

The first game, Trauma: Broken Paradise was reasonably scary. I was sort of impressed by the versatility where they only had a single character model used as an enemy. It was the same sprite they used for the protagonist. As you noted, it's not exactly inventive with it's assets but symbolically, having everything attack you look just like the protagonist probably meant something. But even though every enemy looked just like you, there was a huge variety of attacks. Some versions could fly. Some versions were invisible. Sometimes they were invincible. Sometimes they were easy to kill. Sometimes they just stood there and smiled at you. Sometimes you had to not attack them to get by. Late in the game one of them could run when it chased you and I practically had a heart attack when I heard the footsteps speed up, until then, they had all walked towards me, or floated slowly, if they could fly.

Lots of games have different enemy patterns, but having everything look

I thought it was pretty good. I was an early adopter though and something happened, I forget what it was now, but there was an unsolvable puzzle that I imagine has been fixed by now but I'd have to replay the whole game as a result. I'll get around to that, sometime, maybe.

Surprised this game is so damn unpopular, actually. The gameplay is basically what you'd expect, checking in and out books, figuring out recommendations, but there's some little mysteries and a fixed cast of characters that you can learn about on repeat visits, based on what they're reading. Feels like the negative reviews couldn't really get immersed in it.

Another game looking to recreate the magic of childhood nostalgia right before getting completely blindsided by a new release, this time it was SMRPG.
Its relatively short, has some janky platforming and some of the timed hits feel odd but I can't say I hated it. If they ever do a sequel and fix this games issues then it'll be an absolute must play for me

FPS Resident Evil with furries, absolutely bleak, mercilessly hard, and cryptic as fuck. Play if you miss that psycho murderfuck game aesthetics from 2000's.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/556710/Marrow/
Lovecraftian horror-metroidvania with no generic le tentacles. If you liked ESA and La Mulana, you'll probably get into this one too.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1878350/Prayer_of_the_Faithless/
Good edgy jrpg with original combat and decent story/chars. For those who're into RPGMaker stuff from it's golden age.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/607780/Toymaker/
Atmospheric jrpg in Laplandian horror setting, the sprites are somewhat wacky, but the atmosphere and the music are top notch. For those who like paranoid stuff like Lavender Town in Pokemon etc.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1184040/D1896/
Story driven platformer with godtier artstyle, cheap 3 frame animations, and weird clunky combat. The dialogues alone written by a lonely Lithuanian schizo dev make it worth playing.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1463450/Fallstreak_Requiem_for_my_Homeland/
Apocalyptic utsuge with SCP-like setting+military. The whole series is a hidden gem, actually.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2641420/Vindictive_Drive_2_Maidbot_Archive/
Janky, unbalanced, but somehow still entertaining twin stick where you choose an anime girl with different abilities to serve as your shooting satellite. Sadly, English VO only.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1771880/UNDEMON/
Korean retro platformer about a ghost girl killed by a certain evil corporation and now taking revenge. Got the nostalgic dos vibe and decent story, but can get really assmelting hardcore in some sections.

On the off chance that you're just retarded and not obviously a dev of one of the games itt, there is a difference. Devs are incapable of judging the quality of their own work, if they were they wouldn't have released a flop. And the dev has a direct financial incentive to shill their game here.

I honestly don't care if a dev shills their game, they should just disclose that they are the dev for the above reason

Under 50 reviews is steep, but this one still isn't that talked about.
Pompom is a puzzle-platformer where you have to help guide a hamster through a bunch of different obstacle course-style levels. Pompom is always moving, so your job is to place platforms and block enemies so that he can get to the goal. While the game isn't too difficult to beat, the real challenge comes from 100%. You have to collect coins throughout the stages to do so, which requires optimal placement of the limited platforms. Getting a perfect run feels very satisfying and offers an extra layer of challenge if you really like the gameplay.
Presentation-wise, the game is very cute and bubbly, both in the character designs and in the soundtrack. If you like Hamtaro or Kirby you'll probably like this game.
Surprsingly, this game has controller support. But, since you control a cursor during gameplay, it makes more sense to just use the mouse and keyboard. The controls are very simple, using only a, d, and the left and right mouse clicks. Right click does the same thing as spacebar and I wished the tutorial told you that.
I've had this one on my wishlist for years and forgot about it for a while. It goes on sale a lot.

But if a picture isn't gameplay, then neither is a video. I don't think "posting gameplay" is possible. You can post videos and you can post screenshots but I cannot post "gameplay". That is something everyone has to do by themselves. No one can do it for you.

Reviews don't actually matter. either the game has tens of thousands in under a day in which case, why bother leaving another?

Or they have 50 reviews in which case the difference between 50 and 51 is also superfluous. Its shouting into a void in both cases, just in different ways.

If I don't arbitrarily limit myself to 50 here's the detective games that I always felt bad that they never got much traction because they were amazing. they used to be in the 50 review range but they are slowly but steadily increasing so maybe there's hope for some of them out there.

That guy is talking about the Boxleiter Method of estimating game sales.
A constant of 30 is probably most accurate these days. Like most methods of estimation, it yields more accurate results as n increases. Where n < 1000, it's a noisy signal. Where n < 50, it's kind of pointless.

But more importantly, this newfound fame also retroactively brought some attention back to some of his older work, particularly The Desolate Hope which is now a bit of a cult classic.

>Person A did it
>Person B did it
>no murder occurred, total coincidence nothing to see here
>Option 4 for true detectives who see past the surface

Game lets you pick whichever one you want, gives you an achievement and all that and it carries on. I guess I'll boot up the second mystery now and see if the complexity increases. You can knock off the first case in less than an hour.

Interesting.
There's a hentai VN called Kara No Shojo which has you play as a detective. The tutorial case gives you a crime scene/body to investigate and you can find a number of clues. Without certain clues you cannot come to the correct conclusion but the game never does that thing where aren't allowed to proceed until you have everything you need.
If you rush the investigation the game fully lets you move on without critical evidence and you fuck up your identification of the culprit and you DO suffer the consequences for that.
I wish more games let that sort of thing happen. Not getting the correct culprit shouldn't be a fail state, it should just be a personal failing that incentivizes you to play the case over again and do it right this time.
I'll check out Casebook 1899, your description sounded like what I enjoy.

I only know because I used to occasionally google for mentions of my game. I found some guy on reddit bitching about it being on a sketchy site but not fit girl.
Honestly I thought that was pretty funny.

I'm glad you liked it. I'm still working on a pretty meaty quality and balance update that should be out in the next few weeks. There are a few more tweaks to be made and I want to put in more heavy playtesting, and I want to see if I can fit in some kind of boss rush as a postgame event.

I think it's a question of time and volume. Back then (the 90s), home gaming had only been a thing for barely a decade and didn't really take off until the NES. So, the concept was novel and the quality bar was 'lower' because expectations were still being shaped.

And now, you have almost four decades of game releases and some things have just been refined to the point where you can only get variations on a theme. More games come out on Steam in 5 months than PS1 had in its entire ten year lifespan.

>UnEpic
A RPG-leaning metroidvania with some unique conceits (you're not some great hero or vampire hunter so when you start off your movement, abilities are far more limited and you have to think, make use of lighting etc), fantasy-horror where a dude playing D&D gets sucked into an alternate realm. T

This is a great little retro JRPG from a few years back. Devs are pretty based (they went to Linux gaming communities and asked them to test the game back in the day, did Q&A's etc long before the Steam Deck arrived), has some good mechanics, is not just RPGMaker, and native Linux support. I suggest getting the Complete Edition when its on sale as the expansion is well worth it (challenges, superbosses, story stuff etc) and they even have a PDF "game guide" that is reminiscent of the old days.

I guess anon's rat game still counts. For the price it's not that bad but it's kinda short (demo is almost half the game) you can beat it in less than 4 hours.
>>
>>720150916
It's less a downgrade and more just intentionally creating assets using those old PS1 limitations in terms of texture resolution, depth of field, and soon. Plenty of Unity indie horror games try to do the 'PS1 demake' look. Some succeed.

That's the early access big open world one right? I was paying attention to it for a while but it was too janky for me at the time. How has it shaped up?

My favorite detective or detective adjacent games are:
Ace Attorney (though not for the detective work per se, I just love the game, character, music, and world).
Case of the Golden Idol
L.A Noire
Killer Frequency
Zero Escape as a whole (I am one of the four people on Earth who didn't mind ZTD)
Hotel Dusk

I've also got the following on my wishlist but haven't had time to check out in full yet:
CaseCracker+CaseCracker2
The Painscreek Killings
The Roottrees are Dead
Not for Broadcast
Enigma of Fear
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes

I've played Obra Dinn and I loved the atmosphere but I felt that Golden Idol eclipsed it in terms of deductions and mystery. Also played DanganRonpa and a couple of the other Japanese games (Ghost Trick, Professor Layton, Process of Elimination, etc...)

The Dreamcast/GameCube/PS2 era is a very specific middleground between 'you could probably easily make PS1-looking stuff because it's easy' and 'no, you need a professional artist now since the texture and model quality is much higher.'
>>
>>720153835
Tormented Souls is stuck in between ps2 and ps3. The environments are really well done while the 3d models look closer to a ps2 game. It's a little jarring but it's a great game if you like Resident Evil and tank controls

I don't even change the lightbulbs in my own apartment it can just be dark for all I care, so I don't know what possible difference it would make that the lighting systems between two different games is supposedly different? Is it different? I couldn't possibly describe lighting systems. I didn't realize there was more than one. I've never known any of the stupid nonsense you people bring up honestly, and I've been playing the playstation one since day one. I don't know what a pre-rendered background is. I don't pay attention to the names on the black screen at the end and stalk the creators every move for 30 years. None of that stuff has anything to do with the game.

Yeah, a lot of users here have autism and that means massively preferring/hyper-fixating on certain things (usually things they stuck with since childhood), without understanding people may feel differently, or not as extremely, as they do, so they lash out.

Anyway, I think you likely do know what a pre-rendered background is, you just didn't know what it was called.
It's like in FF7 or Resident Evil 1-3 when the characters and some objects basically stand on top of a jpeg, essentially. Hope that makes sense.

I can vouch for Dismantled, great horror game with one big downside. The end of the game has such a big difficulty spike that it almost ruins the game. My recommendation is to look up how to get the secret weapon because otherwise the ending level is just rage inducing in all the wrong ways. The game is full on survival horror and you never really have that much ammo and yet the ending is like a boomer shooter fps level, but you still have survival horror level ammo.

Can't say I loved the game. Some parts of it were a little tedious and the gameplay itself wasn't stellar. A bit undercooked and needed some tighter direction in general.
But I did like some elements of the game very much actually. Like the construction paper stage looked super neat. I also liked the camera work in the first stage (the one with the asteroid).
The game is very endearing, so I would definetely recommend it. Just don't expect it to be "good", I guess.
