Is this series even good? Never even played it as a kid.

Not really to be honest, there is a reason it's dead.

Virtua Fighter is really good. The engine is super solid and technically rewarding despite how few buttons are involved. Throws and grappling especially feel far deeper than other fighters. But it can suffer a bit from being too “grounded” for its own good. More so than any other “fighting game” it’s really just a slightly heightened MMA game. The times VF was popular was when it was on the forefront of graphical technology such that just depicting dudes fighting was exciting. But without Tekken’s flash, Street Fighter’s plasma chucking, Mortal Kombat’s gore, or even DoA’s TnA, it started being seen as tired and old as soon as it was “just another 3d fighter.” That does the combat engine a disservice, the game is great, but it limits the broad appeal. I think it’s smart that the new game is emphasizing the “realism” of graphical fidelity of its fights. That’s more or less going back to the roots of what the original appeal was.
