Were the 2000's really better for video games or is it millennial cope? I remember Gen X saying as early as 2005 that they missed the 90's
>>
>>720094491
largely cope. people had no responsibility in their youth, and wish to go back to that time so everything is viewed with a rose tinted lens. some games are still great today, but have clearly aged, however a lot of them that are just dogshit now.
>>
>>720094491
Early 00s was good, but around 2004 everything went to shit and has yet to recover.
>>
>>720094491
An all time classic game came out every single month between 2000 and 2010
>>
>>720094621
Wrong, San Andreas, Half-Life 2, and Paper Mario TTYD all came out that year.
>>
>>720094621
I beg to differ. I think 08 was the true end of the 2000s.
>>
>>720094550
then why do white women not choose black men?
>>
>>720094747
2008 was pretty 2000s. 2009 was when you could see the start of the early 2010s showing.
>>
>>720094491
2007 was the last great year of video games. It's only been a downward slope of loss of consumer rights, lack of freedom of expression, and a very obvious competency decline to anyone paying attention to the quality of things.
>>
>>720094491
Certainly more optimism because with the shift of the millennium and birth of the mainstream digital age. We didn’t realize how shit that would go so quick
>>
>>720094491
I miss the mood and vibes
>Were the 2000's really better
Other than technology and programs most media (shows, movies, games, music) all became shit. I miss early-mid 2000s pop. Probably the best thing nowadays is that we can always watch/listen/play old stuff.

MCU slop started its roots in 2008. It's also when Obama was elected.
>>
>>720094491
Most triple A games nowadays are remakes of games from the 2000's. That should tell you something.

The first Iron Man was good and Obama was good unless you're retarded and thought Bush was somehow better.

I think multiplayer games were better. They were not all focused on trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible with loot box mechanics, whacky skin drops daily, and a new battle pass every 2 weeks.

They still did try to squeeze money out of you. A lot of multiplayer games excluded you from main lobbies if you didn't buy the map packs.
>>
>>720094491
Late 90s early 00s was the best. It was really awesome because technology was advancing so fast. Especially on PC, games released a year or two apart would be radically different or more impressive. New games coming out were always really exciting to see.

If you want to reject everything modern then you have to go back to the 80s or before. All of today's modern shit was in manageable primitive states in the 70s and 80s, and absolutely absent in the 60s and before.

2000s MMOs were the highest forms of kino. So many worlds you can get lost in, so many memories you could create. If you play an MMO now, your only memory of it will be how you have to grind something every week and do your dailies all to experience a 2 hour long patch update every 3 months, and that's being generous. In the end your reward is glamour and mounts you show off to players.
>>
>>720095318
I'm not using the word modern literally, I'm using modern in reference to everything post-2010. We need to go back to how things were in the 2000s. It's objectively the best era.
>>
>>720095318

Newer games have to stand out among an ever increasing pile of tried ideas, and there is no broad landscape of new technology to explore. They're not pushing the envelope as much now. It's just the same old stuff with marginal improvements to graphics (if they don't somehow regress).

Here's how (you) can go back. Make your room look like pics-related. Only play older games (pre-2010). Only watch older media. Only listen to older music. Get rid of all social media. Stop using streaming apps. Get a CRT tv. If you really wanna go far into it, throw away your smartphone and get a dumbphone. You can bend the rules for some things like instead of collecting physical games you can just emulate.

No, the 90's were better for video games. The mid 2000's was just its last gasp.
>>
The 2000s were the peak years for vidya, but also entertainment in general. They probably were the most fun days and times to be around by how much energy packed every corner of culture was at the time. Everything just feel so cool and aggressive, and in the mist of edge, the decade felt optimistic. 2010s was when everything went downhill, specifically in 2014 and onward. And here we are, the 2020s, the most dreadful era so far where there is no sense of hope and creativity is dead for good, no fun, no identity, no love, boring shitty world where's there is only fornite, chat gpt and culture wars. What a fucking dogshit timeline.

While video games and entertainment as a whole was better, I miss the people more than anything, so so much. Discussing things online used to be fun and genuine, now it's demoralizing due to bad actors with a vague agenda of controlling some narrative. You have people who come online just to shit everything up ritualistically, usually from a certain demographic of course. It's virtually impossible to have good threads on here anymore, and the rest of the Internet is even worse for different reasons.
>>
>>720094491
It's worth noting just how big the leaps in console tech was with each generation back then. Waking up and kicking on your PS2 with FFX was an incredible experience and giant leap forward compared to your PS1. You just don't get the same impact today when advances are so incremental and the tech specs are pretty underpowered and graphics themselves stagnated and underwhelming.

There was also a good argument to be made back then for owning each console and go full idort to take advantage of all the exclusives worth playing. Now the same idea is lmao-tier given everyone is playing the same serviceshit we've been playing for the last decade except for bingbros rocking their latest and greatest N-branded smartphone also with nogaems
>>
>>720094491
The developers in general were more talented then the ones we have now. and the important factor is games then had a two year deployment cycle compared to the glacial five year's we suffer with now.

It's with some irony that the best gaming to be had in the present are from fan projects (producing modern version of older games and translation efforts of never imported titles) and indie titles, which was the opposite in 2004. The "mainstream" gaming industry is deader than hell in terms of quality.

How are you going to keep maintaining the illusion whenever you have to go outside to buy food or work? Are you going to pretend the local market or your workplace are also stuck in the same time period? You can't even say "I'll just order my groceries from home" or "I'll work from my bedroom" because you would have to use tech from beyond the 2000s.
>>
>>720094491
Clearly you're a zoomer OP so let me help you with some leads:
> between 1993 through 2008, there was a slew of video games that spanned from several generations of consoles, whereupon there were both technological and game design leaps and the dramatic changes were something not seen since.
> I'm of the opinion that when P.T. came out in 2014, I was convinced that we had as a consuming public finally arrived at something that in the early 1990s (I'm going by 1991 when I was around 7.8) where the marketing was "photo-realistic graphics" was the promise for the future (roughly about today let's say)
> Between technological constraints in hardware and software and the costs degrees of semi-specialized talent (that's to say that you needed people with serious programming and program design chops along with other disciplines more or less there besides programming) you had either in North America, Europe or Japan, a particular pool of talent that was either underwritten in a purely corporate manner (Japan), subsidized (Europe), or invested in (U.S.) that had different sizes and methods of managing the talent pool.
> The end result was a series of sometimes back to back titles that really were good but there were many bad ones as well and some that were popular for the the time but were duly forgotten (check every PC game that's no longer sold on Steam or never on Steam that were sold in boxed retail SKUs).
> The diversity of businesses in capitalization was there between high cap, mid cap, and micro cap even of video game developers that sometimes even made shovelware (the $0.99 bargin bin non-premium edutainment software)
But today we have a large amount of consolidation and mergers which was happening in slow motion.
I would encourage you to watch any old show like Gamepro, Extended Play (before X-Play), and ask any 40-something about the games they had.

It's a small setback. Not everything is going to be authentic. Like you'd have to go so far to live in a small town that doesn't have modern stores and you'd have to downgrade to an older car to truly be illusioned when you go outside, but even then you'll still see other people who dress modern and use smartphones and drive modern cars.
>You can't even say "I'll just order my groceries from home" or "I'll work from my bedroom" because you would have to use tech from beyond the 2000s.
To be fair if I downgraded to a dumbphone I can still order pizza through the phone which is very much a 2000s thing

The best kind of research in primary source research. Don't watch a youtube "documentary" (they are patently shit especially if someone with a lilt English accent is there - all they know and look at everyone else in the world is through their Commodore 64, Amiga, and ZX Spectrums)
> Start with magazine scanes of any magazine published in the 1990s and 2000s
> Again watch any VHS rips uploaded to Youtube or Internet Archive
> Do some inflationary price comparisons from what was advertised in toy advertisements or general product store franchises that sold consoles like here in California we had Service Merchandise
> Talk to people that had those systems and not just collectors that are of the same game age group because the "casuals" of the time were usually people that only could afford 1 or 2 games at the time back then (like me) because it was expensive but you'll hopefully a non-nostalgic and not social media influenced opinion.
Oh and play the games! Play them. even if you don't finish them, play them for research and you'll understand, first hand, why they were considered fun by older people like me anyone else of the time even older (going into Gen X).
Because I can give you my opinion but I'm biased to say "yes" because the terms and conditions for buying games were very different from today. I think many young people today are being ripped off with sometimes not knowing how exactly. But you guys seem to be getting around to figuring it out.
Good luck anon. Remeber primary sources. No cutting corners with social media intermediares.

Better than what? The 2000s had some great elements and some amazing games, but there were downsides as well. I can definitely see a degree of GenX and Millennials who were tired of things like
>Brown 'n Bloom shootan
>Squeenix and others who got away from JRPGs and other things they were good at making in favor of knockoffs of what they thought 'murricans wanted etc.
but there were a lot of great developments from the emergence of Steam into a top tier platform to distribute both AAA / indies, plus a whole slew of games during that period

There's only one word that can describe videogames from the early 2000 and it's excitement.
Everything in videogames was made on the promise of a new and futuristic medium, a way of enjoying media contents like never before. The evolution of graphics, physics, hardware was the selling point. People where exited to see this medium mature. Until at some point around 2013 something changed and everything went to shit wasting everything that was built before that.

No more excitement, no more progress, no more passion. Gaming magazine died, gaming convention died, E3 died. Gaming literally low-key died but nobody knows or remembers it.

In the 90s and 00s I was buying and playing games left right and centre.
By the late 10s, hardly any appealed at all.
Now, most just look shit, either worse do-overs of existing formats, woke/politicised do-overs, or UE5 overly demanding poorly optimised shit that for all its polish and lighting looks worse than a 90s game when totalled up.
The underlying gameplay was perfected before the 10s in most genres.

not all of the 2000s, just the first half
the second half is where focus test groups took over and also direct-to-publisher telemetry (achievements), about how much of a game wasn't being played, made it so they could "trim the fat" for the rest of their catalog and boil it down to only easier games to increase retention

In some ways, it depends how you view games as a service and how they're funded mainly, as well as micro-transactions in general. There were lots of good games but soulless brown/bloom and WW2 were in plague proportions.

>the internet
Abso-fucking-lutely. Watching the decline of the internet in real time has been miserable. I genuinely believe a reversion to pre-2016 (at least) internet would be a massive benefit. Pre 2012 would be even better. Earlier has benefits however I think around 2012 is a good balance.
>>
A lot of it is nostalgiafaggotry but I kinda get it. Some of the best games of all time came out in the late 90's and early 00's. Then there was what still stands as the medium's greatest Dark Age in the late 00's and early 10's when the whole brown and bloom multiplayer first military shooter shit took over.

At that point it genuinely felt like singleplayer gaming was going through a crisis. It was when all those classic single player series needed to have a tacked on multiplayer moder while the actual single player itself was neglected for it. I think the worst and, depressingly, most successful example for that was GTA V.

Then it got better in the mid to late 10's, we got stuff like Witcher 3 and MGS V, Ubisoft briefly had some genuinely good releases like Watch Dogs 2 and Far Cry 5, indie games really came into their own, it genuinely felt like gaming was becoming an actual medium again and not just a team sport.

Now we're in a bit of a slump again, with a lot of younger gamers being stuck on scammy "live platform" shit like Fortnite and Roblox and mobile devices. The decline's not as bad as it was around 2010 because single player gaming is still mostly doing fine but it does feel like the golden age is on its way out.

That said, in the 90's and 00's there was just a healthier culture around video games. It was a hobby and a culture dominated by young, passionate people not corporate suits and political ideologues. Magazines were fun to read because they were written by actual fans and you got events like E3, back then still ooen tonl the public, to look forward to. No one was going around making a fuss about how "woke" Half Life 2 was for giving you a black girl as a sidekick.

80s, 90s, 2000s all had both good and bad games, with plenty of in between.

2010s is harder to pin down. Early 2010s had plenty of good, but also had some bad and in the middle. I don't things actually shifted to having less good (but still very good) until late 2010s and 2020s. Largely the in the middle and bad increased in this period, but this isn't some, "it's because the late 2010s or 2020s are bad" sort of thing, so much as business practices just changed a lot in general. When people talk about a particular time period being better, I suppose you can say it's, "they were young then," but I look at it more like, "the things they like were probably in greater supply in that period" or "business practices were more to their taste in those periods" the late 2010s and 2020s are flush with some really nasty business practices. It doesn't make the years bad, but I can certainly see how if you like games you might dislike some 2010s and 2020s practices.

That said, video games in these periods have another half, which is the indie scene, which I feel are largely barren of the negative practices afflicting the AAA scene. And, for that matter, there's some really interesting AA stuff going on too that I feel compliments the good stuff in the indie scene and might spell a better future for the AAA scene. Some of the AA games released in the past few years have been absolutely amazing.

TL;DR :: There's always good and bad no matter what time you live in. I'm more concerned with modern censorship threats, of course, than I am past censorship threats because those threats have already been settled - but the issues right now are still undecided.

Right, I used to be able to just discuss the game with someone and not worry they were going to bring up some social, or political issues (left or right) because back then it was just understood you left your religion/politics/social issues at the door and were there to talk about and play games. The were at the game's forum because they wanted to talk about the game, it excited them. Not saying there weren't ever disagreements but it was different than the modern stuff.
>>

Why does the image start in 95? People were calling people losers for being into electronics and video games all the way back into the 80s.

That said.

I remember being a kid and living across the street from four sisters. Two older, one my age, one like a baby. That household had an Nintendo. No guys except the dad. The girls played the Nintendo in a bubble without any internet. First time I played american mario 2 was at their house.

It's really fucking miserable. I remember having so much hope as a kid in the early 00's thinking about how cool video games will be. How cool the internet will be. The usual childish hope etc

Now I've seen video games decline remarkably and games from my childhood being remade in the slop factory and churned out so much worse than the originals. It's not all bad though, some good games do come out but it's a far-cry from the so called 'golden age' of the 90's and 00's. The internet though? It's fucked and it'll never be how it used to be. The people were a product of the time in the 00's and we'll never go back to that mindset with newer generations who quite frank;y are insufferable (case in point: 4chan). But the censorship and consolidation of the net to a few awful websites and social media is the nail in the coffin. (They) have killed everything we used to enjoy.
>>
>>720094491
honestly, the 2000s were better for games in retrospect because there wasn’t as much remakeslop.
>>
>>720094618
You're strictly wrong. The 2000s were so monumental for video games, that 20 years later, the top most played video games are the ones which try to emulate the 2000s.
