Are videogames still good and it is us who are changing?
>>720100597candles is dick sizes
The cool thing about videogames is you can play old videogames right now and realize they're not as shit as vidya is these days.>But that's nostalgiaThat's cope, I've played shit I never have before and had a great time.
Games are better than ever.
>>720100597I personally believe that it’s a mixture of us getting older, and the industry changing. On one hand- It’s very hard for me these days to find an engaging game that interests me. For example, when I was a kid, I loved 007 Goldeneye on the N64. Great game. But since I’ve experienced COD, Halo, Battlefield, and more recently games like Squad, and Tarkov; I can still go back to those games, but for me they just don’t *quite* hit the same. They’re fun yeah, but I find I’m not super into them as I was before.I kinda feel like it’s the equivalent of someone getting used to a drug and needing a higher and higher dose over time.In other words- more depth, features, and innovation.
>>720100686Girls dont have dicks retard
>>720100941I mean part of the issue there is you're misattributing you getting older to the scene around multiplayer games changing. It's not remotely about having fun with other people, it's about a potential lucrative career as a marketer for the game and being allowed to cheat by the developer/publisher.Nobody actually cares if the game is remotely fun and that could even get in the way of making ads for it.
>>720100597both. I don't give a shit about fortnite but I guarantee there are millions of zoomers that will tell you it was amazing. I can also tell you the amount of slop games has gotten worse especially with corporate greed necessitating things like microtransactions and games as a service.
>>720100780>from that list I only played the two fromslops
>>720100597Also to add to this >>720100941I will say that most games I have found that I’m into these days are indie games from small devs.AAA stuff is just garbage to me and has been for quite a while now in my opinion. At least with indie, you understand you’re getting something from a small team that’s probably unfinished, and it’s a passionate team that really cares, and doesn’t have a quota or deadline to meet (not in all cases I’m sure) that are working on it.>>720101185You really think so? It would be pretty cool if it wasn’t as much me getting older than I thought. Haha
>>720100780>games are better than ever>all the best games came out 2 decades ago and get remakesWhy are games better today though? What exactly makes them better aside from graphical fidelity?
>>720100780All those games are slop.
>>720100780Care to prove it? Your list shows otherwise.
>>720100780>dragon age inquisition won GOTYI forgot that pile of crap won that over games like Alien Isolation, shadow of mordor, and dark souls 2. those 3 games deserved it head and shoulders above DAI.
The reason this issue is so specifically aimed at gaming as a hobby is because gamers are one of the least likely hobbyists to not have other hobbies, or just other things going on in their lives to distract them.In other words, without a family, a job, or even a second hobby, gaming has to carry the entire burden of being the thing that gives your life meaning and joy.And gaming could never do that, not really. It has to be something supplementary, not the whole. This isn't someone trying to convince you to be yourself to get laid or some shit. I'm telling you to find inner peace. Learn to love yourself and you won't need gaming's escapist crutch so desperately. It might lead you to better things, it might not. But wherever you end up, you'll be better for having explored yourself, your interests, your drives, your passions. Because there's nothing quite as sad as realizing your life was yours to live when it's already too late.
>>720100780my face the deeper i got into this list
>>720100597>play old game>good>play new game>badThis argument was always shit when you can go back and play literally thousands of old games.
>>720101885ok but how does that make new game less shit

>>720101796Reminder that for everyone swearing up and down gaming is not fuckedA DLC was nominated for game of the year last year.>>720101561Oh no totally, apparently the scene for TF2 has mostly been like retards on youtube crying about not getting kickbacks from Valve or making weapons worse for like, 10 years.
>You will die before having the chance of playing all the games that will release in the future with super tech:(
>>720100597It's a bit of both. You are older and your personal time is different now than it was when you were a kid. There is still some good games coming out, but I feel like between indies and various forms of A games that there is so many more games coming out monthly than there was back in the early 2000s that games just tend to come and go without leaving any real impact on the community or on the player.I think companies were also generally willing to take risks prior to 2010 because game development had not bloated into costing millions of dollars so companies could try more experimental titles.

>>720102239>You can't make the plain nontroversial observation that those games are shit>You have to post what you like so I can declare them bad for no reason so this nonversation will go nowhere
>>720100597I still have fun but I notice it's somewhat cyclical now. I miss the old communities I had with games I played, but most moved on and some remained as long time friends.
>>720100597I know it's not me for a few reasons. The first is that I've gone back and played a lot of older games that I had never really even heard about or played as a kid. A lot of them are genuinely just more inventive than any modern game I've played. I think of stuff like Act Raiser, a combination city builder and action platformer on the SNES. I've never even heard of a game that's anything like it before or since. It's a lot of fun, and possibly more importantly, it's a lot of fun RIGHT AWAY. So many games are so terrified of just turning a player lose and letting them really get into the system. Part of that is that many games have a lot of sub-systems, but a lot of it is just general developer anxiety over people getting frustrated with not understanding everything at once. But for me, the process of exploring a game and learning how everything works through experience is half the fun. But modern game design sees that as a flaw, so you get multi-hour long hand holding tutorials. In Deus Ex you get an optional training range segment and then bam, you're exploring Liberty Island. And Deus Ex is way harder than any modern game I've played. The second, and possibly more damning reason, is that I've played what's popular with kids these days. Fortnite is okay, I have issues with Battle Royales in general but the game is fine for what it is. The real issue is "systems" like Roblox. Popular games on Roblox are all geared towards children and they're either an inferior ripoff of some other big game, or they're an insulting tangle of traps designed to get the kid to steal his mom's credit card to buy something. The game is secondary, all that matters is the dopamine trap. I just feel so bad for them, like say what you will about Pokemon or Smash Bros but at least it got me playing with my friends.
>>720100597Video games being "fun" to me now are fun in the same way a crossword puzzle is "fun" for some people. It occupies me, I want to finish it, but I'm not truly having a blast like I used to. Last time I felt like that was probably Splatoon 2 around 2019 at the latest. I completely blame myself too. There are a lot of things that are no longer fun to me. I don't think I'm good at the stress of adult life. I'm not even doing badly. Far from it - I'm doing very well. But there's a lot of pressure in not wanting to lose everything I've achieved that stresses me out.

Speaking as an 80s born Anon, yes vidya can still be good, yes we are changing, but also the industry is changing as well and not always for the better. Imagine if I went back to my younger self in the 90s and told them that >All the games in the arcade, you can play them perfectly on your PC, or even on a handheld device, even your phone! MAME being phone capable or just experienced on PC would have been mind-blowing. Want to enjoy some Aliens vs Predator with your friends? Just load it up>Games come out at the same fidelity level as you'd get at an arcade, at home be it PC or console! At the time the only thing that was even similar to this was the NeoGeo, which was seen as outlandishly expensive at $650 but the big issue was the $200+ games each! Aside from that, arcades as great as they were, were generally vastly more visually and otherwise complex vs console titles. >Game types that you think of as console style/only are almost always given a contemporaneous PC releaseHell, up until Steam basically went out of their way to sort out Japanese dev's dependency on console manufacture platforms easily, it was still an issue. I remember Dynasty Warriors 8 XL coming to PC had no fucking online because Koei just didn't know how to make it work at the time. To say nothing for how for a long time certain genres/titles were predominantly console focused and others PC focused but thankfully that has started eroding in the past decade. >Games from Japan are given wide(r) release globally and mostly come with JP audio, no censorship, and reasonably accurate translation Its infuriating to see censorship return recently, but for a long time we let Japanese games be Japanese and devs realized thats what people wanted; likewise, games aren't just for kids. >Low barriers for indie games to be made and published digitally! There are certainly some things that are issues now, notably monetization and corporate greed, but vidya is still promising
>>720103475Has the cycle been broken?
>>720101968Well that is good to know. I think indie is about the only way to go these days. Also what this anon said. Especially about the risk part. >>720102034

>>720100780grim

>>720100597no
>>720104019From debated somewhere in the 2000s until mid-late 2010s there was a period between the censorship bubbles where we got more Japanese releases than ever and they were reasonably intact. It wouldn't be until the culture war fad and global release targets intersected to make JP devs afraid of PR from social media stereotypes and/or hired the exact wrong kind of people doing the localizing and consultant work.
>>720103884It's not even a console vs PC thingAlthough I would day the state of consoles and get "reboots" every 5 years and people lose most of their library for no real reason so they don't have options.Consoles even as late as 7th gen got pretty fun games.

I remember when I was a child, excited thinking about how awesome games will be in the future. Probably truth to both since early 360 gen was really good. frankly I’m trying out Atari 2600 stuff right now, it’s primitive but I’m curious to see what stuff was like before my time and what the guys who designed my favorite games probably grew up playing.
>>720115937fuck you
>>720116572Not all older games are good of course, but you get more bangers.Nowdays it's more like a lot of trash, well-polished for sure, but still trash. And the one decent-ish game, no real bangers to speak of in at least one decade.

I have a younger relative who is 18 or 19 and they are interested in the n64 which I found surprising. I’m sure they play newer stuff I think they play switch games, but they wanted a n64 which my brother and I will probably get them just to encourage them to try games they wouldn’t have access to otherwise. I think to answer your question though a lot of people who are younger will be nostalgic for smart phone games.
