I argue that the original Resident Evil is better than its 2002 remake. While the 2002 version is a very solid game and certainly the best video game remake of all time (even though remakes of already good games are unnecessary but that is besides the point) it is still INFERIOR to the original. My main points are:
>the visual aesthetic in the remake is very out of place with regard to the game's story
The house is supposed to have been abandoned since May, two months before the game takes place. In the remake it looks like it hasn't been touched in decades. On top of that the spooky, gothic vibe with flickering candles, cobwebs and lightning doesn't fit. It was a clear July night. The mansion in the original actually looked like a modern mansion from the 1960's and a creepy, empty front for a lab.
>the Trevor family story is very out of place for the setting of the game
The whole complex is a lab with a mansion front where biological and viral experiments have been taking place by a corrupt pharmacutical company. Why would such a place have an underground tomb with skulls and chains and a nosferatu style suspended casket with leaking blood? It's like an inserted joke or parody. Lisa Trevor's inclusion is unnecessary and out of place as well. It was put there to tug at your heart strings, but it fails in this regard as well.
>the game is full of bloat and padding
Take the courtyard for example. You have to run all the way to a dead end to grab one item and then run all the way back to progress. This is to introduce the unnecessary character of Lisa. The magnum puzzle is not a puzzle and only serves to extend the game time by making you slowly examine and turn each crest the exact same way for no reason (it's not even a puzzle, it's not anything). Don't get me started on the Nitroglycerin.
>the crimson heads and body burning
It is interesting the first time, but on repeat playthroughs it's just more padding and inventory bloat
>less replayability in general
>>
>>720110663
cont.
The remake, having nerfed Jill's lockpick, is far less open and more linear than the original, especially at the start of the game. This also hurts replayability
>less variety and choices
There are multiple choices in Jill's campaign that affect the game's story and ending. This was watered down to a single yes and no choice in the remake.
>>
>>720110663
The remake is scarier though.
>>
>>720110959
He listed a bunch of reasons why the original is scarier. Namely that the original doesn't look like a haunted house at some Halloween theme park, and that it actually has an eery vibe that matches what it's supposed to actually be in universe.
And no, Crimson Heads are not scary,

I prefer the remake, but I can understand why you don't. The HD version is pretty gross with the shitty nu-movement, but at least it's an optional thing and you can still play with tank controls if you have an IQ over 5.

At least we can all agree that only literal subhumans care about demake 2 and beyond.

The OG RE 1 is super comfy and fun to play. Remake 1 is great too, but it doesn't have the same charm
>>
>>720110663
The REmake has all the classic remake problems: changing for the sake of changing, adding bullshit, and overdoing the original concept. Same thing with RE4 remake, it's an intrinsic problem of redoing things.
>>
>>720114805
I don't think there's anything wrong with changing things. The problem with the demakes is that they just make everything they change WORSE.

I've played old remakes of games where the changes were just different. In some places I like the original, in others I like the remake, they're both fun experiences. But then you play something like The Twin Snakes or the demakes, where every single change enshittens the game. It's quite impressive how they managed to fuck every single change up, and make zero improvements to 20+ year old games.
>>
>>720110663
>the Trevor family story is very out of place for the setting of the game
it was something the director wanted to put in the original but cut it because it spoiled the big plot twist too early
by the time the remake came out players already knew Umbrella isn't exactly good people so they put it in
>>
>>720114805
I agree. I could replay the original any day of the week. I played the remake once and I have no desire to ever replay it. It's a fun one time themepark ride for fans of the original but if it vanished from existance tomorrow, I couldn't care less.
>>
OG1 is way more fun to blast through because there's less bloat, padding, and railroaded progression, and I prefer it visually as well. That being said, the remake still being good enough that some people prefer it over the OG is a testament to how good of a job they did with it, at least it isn't a radically different game like 2, 3, and 4make.
>>
>>720110663
Indeed. Same goes for RE2, RE3 and RE4.
>>
>>720115601
Re2 and re3 have the opposite problem. Instead if bloat they cut too much from the games and watered down their stories and characters.

>>720114347
American cover is fantastic, really nailed the encroaching feeling of evil

The only reason REmake isn't slammed as much as it should, is that it released on the GameCube. Tendies back then were polishing every turd they got in order to stay afloat. (e.g. REmake, Twin Snakes, SADX)

>>720110663
Yeah original RE1 is my fave. I do like REmake though but if I had to choose it'd have to be the one that started it all. Love the look of the original mansion and its old gothic victorian wallpapers and ornaments.
>>
Reminder that people only started shitting on the remake within the past six years, and it's all tied back to a self-admitted shitposter on /vr/ spamming threads about it for months.

Although I think the remake has finer points than the original, I will agree on the haunted house take. The first grand hall by the staircase feels less gothic in the original, and just feels like a relatively modern mansion with no one home. If it had ghosts, the original would have them be invisible, a presence you could feel. In the remake they would casper's running around with white sheets yelling "boo!"

That being said it's really a nitpick since the original is great and the remake is near perfect.

Well put.
>>
>>720124105
>>720124997
The advanced mode in the director's cut features changes to the backgrounds to a more grimy and run down aesthetic. This, along with certain moments in the game like the dog jumpscare fakeout, reinforces my notion that the remake was designed with the assumption that the player is intimately familiar with the original. A lot is lost in these moments if you haven't played the 1996 version before the remake.

Sorry about your narrative schizobro
>>

>Crimson Heads are not scary
They're scarier than regular zombies, objectively. This is why contrarians seem like skinwalkers, you almost have a valid, persuasive argument, but then you go too far in a few places and it all falls apart.

There's a good reason Resident Evil was a success on PS1. It's a great game.

Actually it hasn't been that long. It blew up around RE4 remake release because zoomers are threatened by its reputation as a perfect remake so they're grasping at straws to take it down a notch.
