in godot how do you unload an object that's no longer on the screen from memory? like instead of just unloading vram i want to unload system memory too and just reread from disc after a certain point. i don't want to put the whole game into ram that would be too much.

A thousand light sources, and the Steam Deck is still pulling ~150 fps (not pictured, picrel is from my main PC). I don't think I can optimize this further, and it's not like there would ever be that many lights in a single area.
webm from late last week, I'm too lazy to make new ones.on the dungeons area, I started:>level layouts - 10 levels for this dungeon. handmade, but slight randomizing for levels 2-9>2 more enemies - zombie guy and wizard>some music for this arearight now also working on the hover bike races, in a 50/50 debate to just have either>Place: 1st, 2nd, etcor>map of the track w/ icons to show which position you're inprob gonna just say what place you're in for the races, cus thats easier and I'm lazy. Made a new build for the latest Demo Day that adds in an explorable Fortress Fygoon, swappable armor sets (seen in the picture), new weapon characteristics, a tutorial when you begin a new game, and improved character AI. Xbox controller support has also been added for Mac OS X players; beware Windows players, as abnnr (this awesome guy: >>720120206) found that Xinput works differently between Windows and Mac OS X.Play it here on the official website:https://fygoon.com/game.htmlOr play it on the official itch.io page:https://nrasko.itch.io/the-frydarian-tale
I want to build a qt game like stardew valley but without farming. But instead with fishing as your main activity. Worth a go? I'm afraid that fishing is just a dead boring mechanic.
>>720126413something like that could be worth making, even if you end up scrapping it and migrating the fishing system into a larger game. I think, generally, if you're considering a game that focuses on one mechanic, that you should make it super tiny in terms of scale. That way you can focus on the design side of things, and hopefully program it in such a way that it's easy to frankenstein into other game projects. Like iterative building, I guess.there's that game web fishing which was pretty popular, and people seem to really like when fishing is added to games, so I don't think it's a dead or boring mechanic.

how complicated should my character rigs be? i'm going slightly autistic with this idea of doing claymation, and i've added well over 100 control points so i can warp and deform everything and i'm worried about performance as a result.
Windows decided to basically stop working but turns out Unity works surprisingly well on Linux, which was surprising. Just dragged all the assets and project files into a new project and things just worked. Granted I haven't tried the collab features yet.I miss Visual Studio more than I thought however. It's a bloated dumpster fire and I never used any of it's features, but I've gotten so used to the look and feel over the years that Rider or VSC just messes with my brain, hope I get used to it soon.

Had a recent multiplayer session with some other devs from here yesterday. Got a lot of good incite from it. We were playing my game's online Tag mode, so I took a little bit of time to make a fully functioning Treasure Trove Cove map, complete with 6 Goals. Obviously it won't be in the final, but it was important to play on a smaller map than my sprawling original level I made. Also, in playing it in my engine, it's given me a couple ideas for my own levels. Now to work on blocking out my second level. it's a snowy forest with a Haunted House in it. Oy maybe I'll make Ellie first. I don't know. One of those two.>>720120206I played it. I had to find the right controller to get it to play, but beyond that, it's a really neat concept. I do wish there was some way to correct your jump arch while in the air, but beyond that, it's very solid. Player controller is really neat with how much you can do. I can definitely see what you're going for, and the love you put into it is clearly visible. The art direction is really cool, as well.>>720125053As I learned the hard way recently, optimization is KING. >>720131916>Are you using Unity? What kind of techniques are you using to optimize lighting? It's GameMaker. Basically, if we assume that every light is a sphere and doesn't have to respect the line of sight, then we can just draw a quad and interpolate the light from the center. This is a lot quicker than submitting a vertex buffer for every light, like I have done before.>>720138937>I would like my game to run on toastersI'm also testing on an extremely shitty laptop in addition to the Deck. Obviously it can't handle the 1000 lights test, it drops below 30 fps, but if I can at least achieve 60 fps on that thing during normal gameplay, then I know my game is well optimized.
Got save and load almost set up, with encryption and all that jazz. It's fine and pretty straight forward. >>720115513Can anyone other 3D anons tell me a solution for a problem I just thought of? My rig is nearly done, I'm working on setting up drivers and small shapekey tweaks. But what do you do while animating using your IK based skeleton when you need to swap to your FK and vice versa? None of the FK bones are going to have the same transforms to start, and while you can copy that info from the IK and move them to the correct location, I don't think you can do the inverse for swapping from an IK rig to an FK rig, because of how the IK rig is driven by the modifier?Neither of my FK or IK rigs influence the mesh directly(in case it matters), they just control the base deformation based rig that the animations will be baked to for exporting to the game engine.

>>720146884do it in a notebook, and get some of those post-it note things that stick off the edge of the page to help you organize it better.GDD is more about setting constraints for yourself. It's a general idea for what the game is and what the game is not.The ones you'll see game devs bring up like the Bioshock DD, GTA1 DD, etc. are more thorough due to the fact that they had large teams working on the games.Literally just have a few things about your general ideas for the game, followed by how you want your gameplay to be, how you want it to look, etc.Mine's in sections>general outline>gameplay mechanics>foundational code, managers - what they are and how they interact with each other>list of songs/music that I want to use as inspiration for in-game music>list of movies, paintings, artists, etc. that I want to use as inspiration for how the game looksif you overthink it, you'll just get lost in an analysis paralysis. So really keep it simple and don't worry about it, treat it as a general outline for what you want rather than strict rules. It's more like a reference than a strict "this is how the game will be" type of thing

>>720162134tracker DAWs can be found for free, one's called renoise which I like. The polyend tracker (alternative - dirtywave m8), is anywhere from $250usd thru $800usd depend on if you will buy it used vs new, old model vs new model.I like to use the hardware because I can sit on my bed and use it, or take it to my backyard with a USB power hub and use it that way. Nice for chiptune style, but is capable of much more.Still would suggest finding a free tracker-base DAW or pirate before spend $$ on the hardware. In case you don't like that style, it will save you a headache of return or reselling. Also, Bitwig Studio has a nice nodes workflow. I used that a long time, it's very easy to pirate too. Its not a tracker based, but is not quite like the other DAWs either (think of it as in between "loops" like FL or Ableton, and Composition like CakeWalk or Logic)
>>720158435So are you working on both Reinbo and the Avatar game at the same time, or just jumping to one when you get bored of another.
>>720162868>>720162134one thing to note, and I do not see many talk about this.. But the daw, hardware, whatever else you use, itself is like an instrument to learn.Similar to how your game engine is an "instrument" but for making games. You can't magically buy a tool and think it will make you a better creative person. Still need to learn the capabilities and limitation of what you will end up using. Once you know that, and can "dance" around the limitation, is when you find greatness

A few months ago I thought of a new character that inhabits Frydar Island: a Dragon who, despite the Elvarians hating their kind, lives in DarkWood Forest. At last I finally modeled her: this is Ariel the Apothecary. As the name suggests, she is, in layman's terms, a Frydarian pharmacist. While there are a variety of apothecaries that litter Frydar Island, Ariel's work in the field of natural pharmaceuticals is second to none, as everyone, no matter the race, seeks her guidance if a disease grows too malignant. In her earlier years, Ariel married an Elvarian, Adalwin the Alchemist, and the two were faced with attempts on their life by mobs of both parties. Eventually, this culminated in an Elvarian mob gouging out her right eye and, in response to this hate crime, a Dragon mob lynched Adalwin the Alchemist. Since then, Ariel has mixed feelings with both races, as their racism had torn her world asunder; despite this, she continues to provide her services to anyone, as both Basileus Fygoon and Vicereine Iris are considered acquaintances of hers - though neither of them care to listen to her prattle on about "the dangers of bigotry" nor "the foolishness of racism".

>>720161171Was using RPG Maker for a bit, used a mix of free stuff and paid music you can get from the DLC store, on top of the default BGMs included with the editor. Eventually started making some stuff in LMMS. Eventually I'd like to do my own music for everything. I don't know much about it though, but I'm happy that I was able to make some of it myself.
From what I'm seeing making 3D games seems like a giant pain in the ass. Any advantage to going 3D over 2D?
>>720182135the art is a pain, the other stuff is generally easier
>>720182135I found 3D games easier to make than 2D because actually moving things in a 2D space in a grid fashion is a total cunt.
>>720182508I figured physics in a 3D plane would be more annoying, no?

>>720182135>Any advantage to going 3D over 2D?Reusing animations, including retargeting and blending them
Anyone here started with Unreal?I'm more familiar with it thanks to my dayjob making architecure cinematics so I kinda feel like I should stick to it...Never made a game in it though.
>>720182587>physicswhutif you want physics you turn it on, if you don't you can just bake it into animations.e.g. I have an NPC with a robe, he doesn't move much but I baked all the robe/sleeve movements into his anims because it can spaz out in retarded ways with physics. The player can equip stuff with dangly bits, those dangly bits have physics on their bone.
>>720182587Not in my experience. Then again, my only experience with 2D games always have their own physics system that just doesn't work with a more realistic system seen with Unity. Don't even get me started on how the hell falling block puzzle games even work - now that is pure wizardry to me.
>>720182664Why do I sense furfag miasma?
>>720183745I started with Unreal because it had all the resources and tutorials I needed for a complete noob + the guarantee of being able to handle anything I could make because AAA's use it too
>>720183745Remake culture will drive Unreal into the ground. Everything is homogenized to look like the Last of Us so people will hate the look as soon as the indie does it.
>>720181746This gay nigger just copypasted the gay dragon and made it a troon dragon
>>720115513added at least 4000 words of concepts/story/content yesterday into my notes
>>720115513I made a lot of QoL improvements, added new interactions, music tracks, animations, also audio settings actually do something now. If you're interested how RPG elements coud be mixed with adventure game, you can playtest it herehttps://madness-inside.itch.io/dirk-the-adventurerAlso feedback is greatly appreciated.
>>720116136you have to plan out your critical loops first. Don't just start with one polygon and mindlessly go on from there
>>720185674Honestly, my inspo is all PS2-Wii tier 3DAt that point I don't think it matters between UE and Unity for visuals.>>720188806nta but I've made several models with beautiful, full quad loops in convenient places but I'm genuinely questioning if it's even worth the effort when I go and study actual models from games.
>>720189127you don't have to worry about it if it doesn't affect anything. If you're happy with you're deformations then don't worry about it
>>720189127very nice pic, comfy
>>720131626>>720145752I love Mongol even if Agrippa thinks he's a loathsome insect
>>720183745>Trying to make a non-standard UI in Unrealuuuuuuhhhhh killl meeeee
>>720167023But I wouldn't?
>>720117098Are you introducing backyard breeding?
>>720165807Are you planing on letting people play multiplayer without having to rely on official servers?
