What does Nintendo need to do in order to really sell Splatoon 4 to you?

Custom maps are not unheard of on console. Definitely could work if they made it like Forge mode in the Bungie Halo games, letting players edit existing maps with props and structure pieces.

Not impossible but given how ink works and almost entirely only on geometry instead of props, it would end up a nightmare for things not connecting and ink ending up under objects or not connecting properly for movement. without having a really strict grid system.

Even then Halo's gamemodes and structure is based around open ended longer games with far more players. Splatoon has the opposite, focusing on smaller games with tight time limits and no nonsense in between.
The entire game would need to change to accommodate it.
I'd like to see what a large scale game of turf war would be like but I can't see it happening for how much would need to change.

I dont think it would be that complicated. Look at alterna which is basically made out of prefabs cobbled together.
Nintendo probably has a level editing tool similar to forgefor setting up the single player scenarios.

The process for those maps has layering dedicated to if you can or can't ink areas whilst also being precisely placed to avoid gaps. It's something you can't automate or do without some sort of dedicated dev program.

I dont believe it would be an engineering feat to add the ink layer automatically to a specific material or prefab.

I can think of similar systems that are used to automatically generate collision or pathfinding meshes.

Theoretically no, but you would have to manually toggle every single item to allow or disallow ink, this gets harder if you want a specific side of an object to have ink but not the rest.

Automatic systems aren't perfect and almost always require the manual placement of nodes. Many of these only work on connected ground surfaces and need additional help for jumps or walls.
And then you might have sections where you want ai to do a specific thing like hold position or use a throwable in a specific direction, stuff that again is more complicated than just drag and drop.

Everything you say is a massive oversimplification of what's necessary.

The object or material itself has the ink layer. Just like how in game there is a certain consistancy with un inkable surfaces.

I wasnt actually thinking of pathfinding for bots just how automatic pathfinding looks when visualized. Generating a mesh parallel to the surface.

I just like exploring the world more.
Intentional or not splatoons setting and imaginary culture is really neat. And co-op modes/campaigns give us more opportunity to explore it.

There are two things I want to see:
1) Revamped map design. S3 maps felt claustrophobic and too reliant on a singular choke-point in the middle. I hope next game has maps similar to S1: they had more room to breathe and had very distinct identities between each other.
2) Ease the gear ability grind. I had fun making different load-outs in S3, but I wouldn't have bothered if it weren't for the Gear Seed Calculator. Ability chunks still felt too scarce for me to want to experiment with several setups.

Conceptually it's there. I enjoyed how it played but it really needed a few more variants of enemies, stages and some daft modifies to alter how weapons work a bit more.

I just want a bigger tower or even an endless mode. It feels like just when my build is getting fun, it's over. Especially when I have to sacrifice actually playing a floor to visit the vending machine so I can actually max out my chips.
Also a hack that alters chip bias to make alternate builds easier

I still think there are some secrets left to find in that mode. Nothing major. Maybe the right combination of chips gives you something.

Like i get that the ink color is controlled by your highest color and pattern by your second highest. But which chips result in each armor accesory im not sure.
