I feel like old games are just ugly. You either look at them on your screen without any filter and it's a pixel mess or you put a bunch of dark lines all over your screen and it still looks like shit but it also makes your screen really dark.
>>720151198>>720156662
I like CRT filters, but why do they always make them so dark?
>>720157335skill issue and get decent hdr monitor
>>720157335because it puts a bunch of black schmutz on the screen to give the illusion of blending everything together
>>7201508863/4s of this site now is just someone thinking up something retarded, and then they pretend they're serious about it.
You fags are so obnoxious and then gobbled down Elin's filters, mixels, 1.5x scaling, every pixel art sin just jammed in.
>>720157421I'm too poor and one bad day away from a bullet in the brain, I'm just trying to enjoy games or food or whatever else while I'm still here.

>>720157335Because retards don't know how to adjust the gamma to account for the line darkening.
>>720150886LOOKIN’ GOOD
CRT filters are a false nostalgia because they didn't really look that dark and fucked up. You're not remembering some aperture grill here. An NTSC/TVOut style filter or shit like that is more "accurate" for blending things together to soften the image.
>in a room with multiple CRTs>noticeable flickering all at different refresh rates>ocular migraine intensifyingOh yeah. It's gamer time.

Should I spend 75 dollars plus (pic related is 125 dollars) for a piece of shit like pic related lol? I guess they are so expensive because of the degauss feature. We've lost the technology on how to do that.
>>720150886i dont get it?
>>720150886The fact of the matter is pixelart was always a limitstion of the technology of the time.If somehow we had HD resolutions before advanced video game graphics, classic 2d games would have absolutely looked like drawn artwork or vanillaware games.
>>720157335Because filters are sn overlay of shaded lines to imitate the scanline look. What you need is a shader that actually transforms the image pixel by pixel while retaining the natural brightness and saturation

This thread is so retarded.Everybody had a CRT monitor 20 years ago. Devs knew everybody would be playing on CRT so they designed it for CRT."Flat Screens" were the big new thing being introduced that everybody wanted and thought was better. And so were Compact Discs. Is anybody here old enough to remember when everybody thought CDs were going to be the next big technology? Literally every single PC game was on a CD just like consoles but now consoles are like the only thing left that even uses CDs anymore, everything is just streamed or downloaded now lol.Lol.

Stop pretending to play retro games and actually buy a retro console and grab a CRT off of facebook marketplace. Replace the capacitors and install a scart outlet and calibrate the geometry. Anything that's not original hardware, through composite or scart (no FPGA) are fake experiences of retro games.

>>720177419I'm going to just assume that you've killed at least one person by posting this and not warning them about the spicy pillow hiding inside CRTs that might instagib them if they touch it
I genuinely was alive back then and I remember everybody hating the old CRT monitors and wanting to replace it with the new ones that we have today because they were better. And I think it's really funny how nostaliga has made people pay big bucks to have the same CRT monitors that literally everybody used to have many years ago.Another thing I noticed is that I don't really hear people call the new monitors "flatscreens" anymore, that's what we used to call them because we were used to big ass monitors that were fat, and so the new monitors we all have today were called flatscreens back then to distinguish them from the "normal" monitors. But I remember everybody thinking that flatscreens were better than CRTs back then which is why we all phased out CRTs and moved on. So it's funny to see zoomers wanting to back to the past and relive history now.Lol.
>>720150886>>720177419atrocious bait
>>720180358Actually CRTs were mostly phased out because they were difficult to mass produce and couldn't be scaled down to mobile devices. But yes while the tech had some upsides like low latency and nice blacks, they were shit in every other way. Distorted image, dim, heavy, annoying buzz, extremely ugly, mediocre colour reproduction, low resolution and the list goes on.Early LCDs were pretty shit too and it a while before they got as good as they are now. CRTs had the problem of being technological dead end and there was little that could be done to dramatically improve them.
>>720177419>everyone is banned from playing retro games if they don't literally kill themselvesSo this basically means that retro games are now banned universally unless you already have a well-functioning CRT? Is that what you're saying? Because eventually yours will die too.
>>720180358and by everybody you mean the average female who didn't use them for video games. it was very obvious in those days that flat panels had much lower visual quality, they're nothing like modern ones. also in those days, "flat screen" was used to market certain types of CRTs that had a flat, rather than curved, screen surface, so the LCDs were called flat "panels" referring to its form factor rather than the screen itself, while "LCD" was known at the time for primitive displays like Game & Watch so they didn't use that to market the monitors.size and weight aside, LCDs didn't really become more popular for power gamers until widescreen formats became widely available, which at the time was a means of cheating/exploiting engines that simply added more FOV if you had a widescreen monitor. since widescreen CRTs never made it to a mass market, upgrading to a widescreen flat panel became a quasi-necessity for competitive gaming.
>>720159559You're right that most CRT filters completely miss the glow and shine a real CRT has and as such don't really look right. I guess that's why some of the fancy filters use HDR, though realistically speaking that's not going to be visible through a screenshot. That "bad video signal" simulator you posted doesn't really look like a CRT either though, I mean a CRT with a good quality signal doesn't look like that but the thing is that CRTs hide image flaws to some degree so they really don't look that horrendous even with a bad signal.
>>720159559Yeah, just adding fake lines that darkened the whole thing doesn't make it look like a crt. They need to adjust the brightness and more.
>>720151057TV borders are the dumbest fucking shit imaginable
>>720157681It's addicting. I made a bait thread forever ago about ball mice, it got like 100 replies.
>>720174987lol whatYou were running 640x480 in 2005? I kind of doubt it. That was extremely outdated for 2005. I'm quite sure in 2005 I had already moved to a 1280x1024 LCD monitor. Most people were either still holding on to their CRTs or were using a then-new LCD monitor like that. I was in high school back then, not even the shitty monitors in the computer lab were 640x480.
>>720159559Agreed anon. This looks more like a CRT than most "CRT filters".My only complaint about the ntsc type filters is that they almost look more like a tape recording of the game than fresh output. Probably because they're based on recordings or captures.
>>720159559Basically this, we never realized how distorted and fuzzy CRTs actually looked until much later in retrospect - because they didn't actually look like that. You sat far enough away from the TV that all those whatever lines just blurred up into each other and the screens were plenty bright enough for anyone. Actually they were way brighter than the early flat screens - TVs are designed so you can easily watch them in bright daylight from like 10-15 feet away. Monitors only have to be bright enough to be fine from like 3 feet away. Also because we had for years already moved into 3d gaming by the time flat screens were common, the differences in how sprites looked on native hardware vs digital emulation on LED were not really noticed by many. Even today you could get a crt and play original hardware on it but honestly you add not really gonna notice the CRT "look" to it unless you are sitting like 10 inches away from the screen which you definitely aren't supposed to and still aren't due to eye strain.
I miss the old 28" Zenith my dad got from Fry's. That was beautiful.
>>720183337this guy gets it.One side benefit of CRT being fuzzy (I definitely wouldn't use the word blurry) is that it is the absolute king of maintaining image quality across multiple resolutions, especially upscaling a lower resolution image into a large screeneven average CRT monitors actually looks much, much sharper than software/integer/nearest scaling on a LCD screen (doesn't matter the panel type) when you project a 800x600 image onto a 19" monitor
>>720183729>much, much sharper than software/integer/nearest scalingNo. Nearest neighbor / integer scaling are completely razor sharp with no blur whatsoever. Displaying those on a fixed-pixel display is as sharp as it gets, no CRT is sharper than that. Of course, old games weren't meant to be blown up 7x and then display on a perfectly razor sharp screen, so they don't really look their best, but it IS as sharp as it gets with no blur whatsoever.
>>720177419Imagine not having a crt with an hdmi port like a peasant.
>>720182832 Based thread honestly. Whenever I get bored I’ll just drop some bait like “the DualShock was a mistake” or “SNES mode 7 was wasted potential” and go do laundry. Come back to 70 replies of pure hate and autistic technical breakdowns. It’s beautiful.
>>720157681>now
>Bilinear filtering>no ugly fake scanlines>no blocky pixels>nobody ever talks about it in these threadswhy is that?
>>720150886I personally know people who always put on these smear filters when playing old games... Your brain has to be absolutely disgusting if you prefer them
>>720185376Mathematically, you are correct. In practice? you need to internally render at x4 resolution then downscale with nearest neighbour (which is basically antialiasing) to match CRT, and this is only available to functionally defined environments (polygonal rendering as opposed to sprite upscaling).A literal case of "LOOK WHAT THEY NEED TO MIMIC A FRACTION OF OUR POWER"
>>720161362That image was made to be displayed on a Genesis/MegaDrive. You can tell the CRT shader is a general one and not specialized for the console. Check the glow on the knob on the ray gun, the black vertical lines would be invisible on real hardware because of how the console handled interlacing.
