There are exceptions but generally the sheer rate of attrition, damage and logistical considerations as well as declining 'PO-LEESE THAT MUSTACHE' in the middle of a slog of a battle you get real heterodoxy in how grunts look. The go-to example for me is how the United States, being the greatest best organized most logistically sound state to ever exist in human history still had an eclectic look to the invading force in 2003.
