I have played the game for years and I will still occasionally find a part combination I haven't seen before that actually produces interesting effects (you can have a white rarity pistol that shoots two bullets per trigger pull that ricochet - this is normally a part meant for a pearlescent gun, but due to the way that part distribution works you have a rare chance to get just about anything although we are talking zod rune levels of rarity here).The manufacturers having strengths instead of gimmicks was also a much better approach. Big magazine size? Vladof. Higher elemental damage / procs? Maliwan. Fastest reloads? Tediore. The gimmicks from BL2 onward are all trash.
