a 4k texture at 20gb with 40 layers of filters and lumen slop will look worse than a 1k texture at 200mb using photorealistic deferred lighting and 1k texture will run faster as less polygons

problem is it requires a white mans mind to make something good and even 1000 dei hires cant even mimic the power of 1 white man
>>
>>720214285
As more time passes, the more the industry loses skills like knowing how to optimize for hardware, and how to produce and render ANYTHING without an engine like Unreal doing the hard part for you.

What this last decade has taught me is where I live must be an anomaly. All these games that are made by teams from all across the world that are aiming for realism all have obscuring fog/smog yet when I look out my window I never see it. The logical answer is that I am the outlier.
>>
>>720215729
The only game that got the fog kinda right is Bloodlines 2. That shit is roughly in line with what you can see around here in winter. 98% of all other games feel like they are set in some Scottish bog or something. But I could even deal with that. It gets especially silly when the fucking fog is indoors. WHERE THE FUCK IS IT COMING FROM? WHY? FUCK
>>
>>720215729
It happens during the summer dawn, usually after the rain, but it's not common and isn't "the best looking" weather they try to replicate in games

There's a reason why RDR2 sold 45 million copies. It really is a good game. It's an exception rather than the norm, though.
>>
>>720215883
Have you looked around Indian cities on street view and compared the fog?
>>
>>720215883
> It gets especially silly when the fucking fog is indoors. WHERE THE FUCK IS IT COMING FROM? WHY? FUCK
That is because they attached it to the player/camera so as long as there is enough distance for the effect to activate (as naturally it is set a few metres from the player/camera) you get fog. That fancy mansion dining hall seemingly generates its own weather.

>>
>>720214285
I completly forgot to take pictures of this, but in the original version there's a "detail layer" that is overlaying the main texture that appears only in sunlight. It helps to (slightly) hide the lower quality textures that are there on the tops of the bridge walls. In the remastered version, there's no such thing, making it look much worse than it should.
>>
>>720214285
Los angelans don't know what outside looks like without smoke and dust in the atmosphere
>>
>>720219589
So they made it worse on purpose?
>>
>>720218269
People on this board keep saying this but nanite is literally just a way to render scenes with lots of polygons and have it run more smoothly. Nothing related to fog, lighting or ghosting (this last one it would actually serve to prevent if anything). Fog settings are easily controllable all around and with a click or two you can even disable fog altogether, I imagine this is true for most game engines.
>>
>>720214285
I dont know what game that is but the first picture looks much better
>>
>>720219712
No it seems to be how the engines read and compile data. Serious engine (top) can do so; unreal engine 5 (bottom) cannot.

remasters where they "upgrade" the assets like that is usually a combination of AI upscaling and outsourcing to India
the result is that all of the assets are better on a technical level, but nothing meets the artistic vision that the original had
>>
>>720219798
Talos Principle of release vs remaster.

>>
>>720214285
what's game?
>>
>>720214285
fog, that's the problem, for some reason devs hate it when gamers can actually see their world so they cover them with fogs and mists and whatnot
>>
>>720220571
fog isn't as much as a problem as bloom
>>
>>720218304
Performance - with fog you can decrease quality of distant objects.
Also no game at the graphixxs standards of the time of its release can simulate large areas so the fog is there to artificially make it seem larger. It ends up retarded because the volumetric fog you would only notice kilometers in the distance is right in front of you and sometimes even indoors.
>>
why would better technology and more detail somehow automatically equal more realism? Is a sphere more realistic than a square just because the former is harder to render?

the real answer is there cannot be perfection in a replication, and attempting such only creates a mockery of something much greater than man can ever dream of creating

You chose a poor example because the atmospheric contrast in that pic is amplified by shitty post-processing in lightroom/photoshop. Someone overdid it on clarity and contrast and the software compensates for this by adding these unnatural dark/light areas.

Atmospheric haze exists but it's not that pronounced irl unless you live in a fucking swamp on a foggy day.

People just don't understand that haze as in the OP simply is not visible that close. In your pic it's miles away. The way it's meant to be. But every dumb ass game seems to believe that haze has to be 2m infront of you like fog. That's not how that fucking works you dumb ass devs

>>
>>720222413
That's what I said ealier ITT. The devs put it there to fake far away distances that they can't put in the game world. They're trying to trick the player into thinking "there is haze over there that means it's many miles away!" when it's 30m in game.
Well, it doesn't work.

Videogames just look better without tons of unnecessary detail and visual noise. And I'm not saying every game needs blurry textures. I love sharp textures and normal maps, I just prefer it in a more minimal style like pic related

Tech limitations force devs to get creative to make things look nice. More advanced tech also enables companies to hire jeets who don't give a shit and will just throw a thousand piss filters over everything.
