It's crazy to think about how big of a deal it was at the time of release, but it holds up surprisingly well even today. I'll also give an honorable mention to 4. But it usually looks way too obvious and leaves nothing to the imagination. Sophitia is a much better design in that regard.
I have fond memories of playing 4 on ps3 and bullshiting with random people in the lobbies. Now nobody talks to each other and that basically killed my interest in playing fighting games online.

SCII is the best in the series, hands down. It's one of the few fighting games where the combos are simple enough that the gameplay is more about timing and correct combative distance, but complex enough that skill is rewarded. Great game, holds up to this day.
Lets just say my mains in Soul Calibur and Tekken are Raphael and Lee Chaolan if you know what I mean.
