Fallout 4 player here. I love to play the game just to keep shooting things around and with many weapon mods that I download around.
Why should I play 3 or New Vegas? Is the gun play on them better and more fun?

New Vegas has better quest design with branching paths, multiple solutions to quests, a reputation system that actually matters and overall more interesting stories. Also, New Vegas has more interesting level perks that uniquely affect gameplay, favourites being Super Slam, Slayer and Implant GRX (official DLC).
Also it is just more Fallout. More Wasteland to explore and more cool stuff to collect and hoard.
Fallout 4 has better power armor and a slightly better dog though because he is a beautiful german shepherd and they added some simple dog behaviour to reaally add to his charme. And you get him at the very start so the emotional connection is deeper than Rex who you only get midway trough the main story.

I would say play 4, New Vegas and, only if you are into very old school turn based RPGs, the original two Fallouts.

As someone who played all 3, I'd recommend TTW, which is a combined version of 3 and NV which when modded allows you to play both games as a sort of continuous journey instead of just having 2 worldspaces to explore, which I found quite nice.
There's a pretty comprehensive guide called The Best of Times that shows you how to set it up and what basic patches/fixes to get or you can use a modlist if you're lazy. Mods are largely up to you but do get all the best gunplay ones because base 3/NV gunplay fucking sucks, as does the menu swapping which mods also make much better.
