Fun fact: despite being one of the most successful western releases in the franchise and basically being a phenomenon with spotpass in japan, 9 is still the only mainline game that never got a port or remake. I'm starting to think that's because X is still making money and the idea of an online capable 9 would eat into those proceeds.

I remember when the game was first coming out the marketing being that you started as a human but get turned into one of the other races, but later content seemed to suggest that you get turned back into a human (or at least have the option to) so I don't really know where the other races really stand anymore. Maybe someone who has played the game can provide better context over the other races. I remember when it was first revealed being interested in playing as the fish people but I've yet to play the game to form my own impressions with SE never localizing the title and for ages the game just being very difficult to even try to play outside of Japan.
