That is literally the game I want to play. The whole Johnny story line sucks ass and railroads you into this imperative narrative where you can't really enjoy the city yourself. On top of that, the devs force the player to be friends with Jackie even if you don't like him for trying to screw you over in the prologue. God this game is truly a mess and deserved all the negative hate it got. And no, the anime did not fix the game.

I like the game, and I think it is neat, but the story/writing is just not good. The story has more plotholes than average road in my eastern european shithole and repeatedly contradicts itself and the setting rules. This is further exacerbated by the fact that there is actually very little player agency when it comes to roleplaying, with a whole lot of fucking moments that are on rails and cutscenes (I've read somewhere the game is 50%+ made of cutscenes). Again, good game, but with a weird amount of really stupid dev decisions.

A very rags to riches direction, and the game also implies you had some connection to the Valentinos, not a part of their gang like he was, but it's another bit of overlap.
