I have never met someone that plays pubg
>>720368923I got bored of the first Hollow Knight and have zero intent on buying Silksong but to steelman the argument the fact that an indie game at all was able to break into the top 20 for the record of highest single volume of concurrent players on Steam when the majority of the remaining list is all AAA titles is still impressive and a sign of the overall market shift in consumers towards indie titles. Unfortunately for Silksong however, Palworld is right there in 3rd place, casting a long shadow as to just how high of a peak an indie game can reach on Steam and that game also launched day 1 on Game Pass too.
>>720368923Hypeflation is real.
>>720371735>the fact that an indie game at all was able to break into the top 20bg3 is indie game and sits at 13th spot
>>720368923They made it way too easy with the latest patch and everybody breezed through it and forgot all about it.
>>720372784meh, sure self-published, but larian has 500 employees lol, more than many typical aaa studios
>>720368923Marvel Rivals is fucking dead lmao
>>720372982yeah, that's what independent means. To be self-published
>>720373056that's why saying indie in that way is completely meaningless. it's going to include half of all games with the highest budgets.
>>720373190then indie has no meaning at all
>>720373056Nintendo is greatest indie dev of all time
>>720372784Baldur's gate is objectively a AAA game, it was built at scale a studio with a AAA game development level of headcount with a AAA budget that exceeded well over 100mil. Studios like Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Capcom all self-publish their own titles too, but are we calling Assassin's Creed Shadows, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or Monster Hunter Wilds indie games?I do agree that the generalized meaning of "indie" is currently muddied, so to clarify for my case what I would qualify as "indie" is more a particular scale and budget for development (which is why I wouldn't consider Wu Kong an indie title either, even if it was also self-published.)
>>720373056Assassin's Creed is an indie series
>>720373392>which is why I wouldn't consider Wu Kong an indie title either, even if it was also self-published.Wukong is not indie because they received CCP money
>>720373465That's literally exactly the reason why I wasn't considering Wu Kong an indie game, the scale of development for that game was very clearly AAA. Honestly, with how much "indie" games make up proportionally of the yearly revenue of steam, I wonder how much longer we are going to go on the term before we stop calling such games "indies" and just go back to quantifying titles at scale with terms like B-game, AA-game, etc again. "Indies" already made up like 42% of steam's total revenue last year, so what do we start to call it when those same titles start to become the majority of total yearly revenue?

>>720368923That's it? After all that talk? After all that supposed hype?
>>720368923>587KNot bad, but it's certainly a far cry from the "2+mil day 1!" I saw Silksong fans claiming it'd get.
>>720373235Indie as a label never made sense to begin with, people just use it to refer to anything that doesn't LOOK like it has a big budget. That's why you get shit like Dave the Diver being called an indie title when it isn't at all.
>>720368923IT BROKE STE-ACK
>>720368923Literally a 3 man indie game living among some of the biggest studios
>>720374196Yeah it's simply becoming time where the industry has a whole should start to consider new ways to categorize itself. Indie as a term worked back in the day when we basically saw the mass extinction of smaller scale games from mainstream devs, but we're rapidly approaching the point where those same indie titles are simply becoming the mainstream. To give credit where it's due, it's a good thing for the industry that a game made with such a small team on it's own like Silksong or Palworld is able to reach such heights. It's a sign that this industry and medium as a whole does not need to stagnate around whatever shit ideas coming out of the AAA space. I just wish that the "indie" scene can eventually figure out that there's more than just like, 6 genres of games they could make.
