Besides the part where he threw away a shitload of his kids he's not that bad of a ruler in all honesty.
>>
>>720420646
I feel like doing that alone is pretty bad enough
>>
He bankrupted a kingdom buying sawblades
>>
>>720420904
>Gives bugs free will
>Lets other factions like the Hive, the Mantis Tribe, Deepnest, and the people of Greenpath stay around instead of genociding them
>Actively works to protect them from infections like the Radiance's return and Lifeblood
>Shut down the Soul Sanctum as soon as he found out that they were using souls
HE DISCOVERED HALLOWNEST IS WHAT HE DID. HE WAS A BRAVE WYRM. AND ON THIS SITE THE PALE KING IS A HERO, END OF STORY.
>>
Is Grandmother Silk also a Wyrm? Why does she get to control Pharloom like the Pale King did with Hallownest?
>>
>>720421239
She's a Pale Being, which is a specific category of God that both she, the Pale King, and the White Lady all fall under. Presumably because they're all entities of Soul.

all pale beings have egos. It’s in their blood. Silksong confirms this. Even Hornet is susceptible to it.

Also I read this as propaganda. Not that he believes it, but he's blowing smoke up his subjects' collective asses. It's why all the signs are allegedly for "higher beings" but really can be read by anyone. It makes the average Hallownest bug think they're special and they live in a great place and should never leave.

The Weavers probably still would have rebelled eventually anyway, jsut given how uncaring and cruel she was to everything around her. It might have taken longer if she was earnest with them about their origins, but when she's putting a tax on breathing for the common people, ripping out people's souls whilst they're still alive to make lamps, injecting so much silk into people that it embeds itself in the genetic code of their children and children's children, making it so that dying/being sick is highly illegal and you'll be punished/tortured over it and brought back to keep working if you ever actually die and a laundry list of other war crimes, it's only a matter of time before enough is enough.

Even the old guy thinks that too

>Since once we left, humans would just kill us.
>I felt a little betrayed when he eventually changed his mind.
And besides, it's not like in Hollow Knight were there was a NEED to get out of the underground. The monsters were doing just fine until you came down

>>720431586
>The monsters were doing just fine until you came down
they make a point of saying that the underground is getting crowded because of overpopulation. plus, they're all on the verge of giving up hope for their freedom which sustained them for this long. they don't necessarily NEED to escape but things may get ugly if they don't do it eventually.
>>

Imagine you're about to explain to your king that Moth Satan has returned after also informing him just last week he bankrupted his entire kingdom for his autistic fixation
>>
>>720431830
Double damage is much more common, bosses have more HP on average, some bench runbacks are very annoying, and you have to manage your currency more carefully
>>
>>720431830
not him, but yes, it's quite difficult. about half of all enemies and the vast majority of bosses deal 2 masks per hit, enemy AI is more complex and difficult to outmaneuver, and the platforming is harder. you do get more tricks and mechanics to use, but there are also more gimmicks and a lot more trolling to put up with. the game is significantly harder than hollow knight while also being much bigger and longer
>>
>>720431830
Only thing thats harder is that a lot more enemies do double damage now (pretty much every boss does) and your overall dps is gutted.
>>
>>720431830
Apparently every enemy with a projectile is 2016 Curry
>>
>>720431840
That's what I meant when I said they were doing fine until you came. The timing of you coming to underground was pretty good.
But before that, there wasn't an urgent need to break the barrier
>>
Why did he fill that one area with saw blades though
>>
>>720431830
Part of it is a numbers issue. You deal substantially less damage, have less HP, enemies deal more damage, and have more health than in HK. In HK if you were struggling you could play defensively and learn the moveset, that process is delayed in SS since enemies are faster, you can take 3 hits on a good run, and run backs are longer so you're spending less time learning the boss. Mechanics and upgrades are more backloaded so you will find yourself playing through more of the game with less options. The developers also fell into the Fromsoft trap of:
>Well the player has spent the last 7 years mastering HK, how do we still challenge them
So gotchas, delays, fake-outs, and odd parry timings are just part of the normal gameplay now to add friction
>>
>>720420646
>threw away a shitload of his kids
How is that bad? They were just mindless void homonculi, not actual sentient beings.
>>
>>720431830
It's definitely harder than 90% of HK, but that's a good thing. HK was piss easy in terms of the exploration and the vast majority of rooms, and only had the rare super hard optional areas and bosses. Silksong is just much more consistent in terms of difficulty. I haven't finished yet, but so far the difficulty peaks in HK with the white palace/path of pain and zote/grimm/pantheon were much higher than anything in Silksong. It's just that the normal areas are properly challenging now.
>>

>Radiance chilling at home with her moths
The Radiance made its followers retarded. They had unity and felt cozy but they had no higher reasoning. The Pale King actually upgraded them from instinctive beasts to sapient bugs, which is why even the moths immediately became big fanboys of his and forgot about the Radiance.
>>
>>720421239
She's in the same category as people like the Pale King, White Lady, Grimm, that one giant green thing that gives you a trinket in that green acid forest area, probably also whatever's making lifeblood and the Radiance fit in.
They might not all be literal Wyrms but they're all similar enough.
The outliers are stuff like the Godseekers, the Void and that one giant worm dude in the first game.
>>
>>720435528

Sentience is overrated. It only leads to self-destruction.
This is why the only things that don't go to ruin are the things that stay consistent and predictable and don't try to branch out into other things, like Grimm, the Void and the Radiance.
>>
>>720435671

And what do they do? They just hunt animals and stick to themselves.
They don't try to branch out, they don't try to do science or poke at the funny black goop deep underground to see what it does, they don't try to study souls or magic, they just make spears and chuck them at invaders and they're fine with that.

He saw his people get genocided in a one-sided attack that came out of nowhere, they got sealed, and so much time passed before a human showed up his anger was gone. Then one shows up and they adopt it, then BOTH his kids get killed by humans and by the time he got another opportunity to leave so much time passed again he just wanted to rest or die instead of going out to go kill every human.
And even then he was still going through the entire underground to keep the people happy instead of sitting in his chair and coping that things are still okay like PK when Radiance was buttfucking his kingdom.
Toriel's the actual bitch, she leaves him to rule alone when their kids die but still criticizes him for doing that, but then enables it by trying to keep humans away from him, like damn make up your mind.

>he may easily get killed like Asriel
Asriel could've wiped out the entire human village with a sneeze if he wanted to, he just didn't want to fight back.
A monster with just one human soul's already basically undefeatable.
All he had to do was kill just a few villagers and he'd become an actual god with capital G.
>>

y'know, theres this big thing that always annoyed me about Undertale's lore
If they KNOW that monster + soul = demigod/god

That's a thing only possible in the Underground for some reason, or at any point really when you reach Godhood (aka 7 souls or level 20). Why? Who knows, maybe they'll explain it in Deltarune.
The weird stuff to me is how humans used to be able to do magic like monsters but they can't anymore.

That's a lie, though. No. I've beaten Hollow Knight two and a half times and never even did godholme really besides some radiant bosses.
I did path of pain, nightmare troupe, and the flower delivery though.
I'm not bad at the games but I still die in HK. Probably above average but no where near top level. Same for Silksong I bet. It is harder but it also gives you incredibly oppressive offensive tools to make up for it. I just beat a couple bosses in Silksong earlier without any silk skills or tools because I am cursed or some shit but it took a bunch of tries because I was so used to having them. Once I got used to their patterns you can adapt even with minimal stuff as long as you play methodically

I didn't mean to humble brag, just saying for me Silksong is generally harder but HK had higher peaks (mostly DLC and optional stuff)
Silksong rewards methodical aggression where you get into a steady rhythm of dodging and attacking. Hollow knight was similar but some bosses required face tanking for me at the end if you didn't think you were gonna make it.
HK had higher difficulty in platforming at it's hardest but SS is generally harder as a baseline

Not really, from the get go Silk was fucked up;
> Created the Weavers from spiders and tried to force them to be her children
> Actively hunted down any Weavers she could find and either pulled them into her thrall or had them sealed in The Slab
> Allowed the experimentation of Silk and Shell in the Whiteward creating the Dregs and basically killing the Conductors
> Stamped out at least two other kingdoms (Green Prince & Karmelita) possibly three (Khann) and was so disliked that there was a planned uprising even before Hornet showed up (Bilehaven)
> Developed a cult of fear in her subjects that still persisted even to the present as seen with Seamstress that she could take their free will away
> Tried to create artificial children by fucking with the void, but did so in a completely haphazard manner resulting in failed experiments like Phantom
> Kept ensnaring bug souls with Silk even after her kingdom started to fall into disrepair
> Let her own daughter get consumed by Void just out of spite against Hornet
> There is no ending where just killing Silk saves Pharloom, either Hornet inherits the role of higher being through binding, causes the Greyroot to become a higher being or unleashes the full might of the void on the land, it's only through Hornet having to then separately save Lace that Pharloom isn't completely fucked

Let it be known that Silk might actually be the most inept and incompotent higher being that ever existed, even Radiance at least had good vibes back when the Moth Tribe worshipped her.

So, I was playing Silksong last night, and I found myself frustrated more often than I remember ever being playing HK.
>a lunging enemy makes contact with you even after you whack them with your needle hitting you for 2 damage
>pogoing of a buzz saw sends you flying a little too high making you hit another buzz saw on the ceiling for 2 damage
>before attacking enemy quickly shuffles a few steps towards you messing with your spacing so you end up colliding with their model and suffering 2 damage
>wall jump sends Hornet flying too high so her stupidly long head hits the buzz saw on the ceiling doing 2 damage
I don't remember that sort of thing happening in the first game. Or if it did, it didn't get to me like it does in Silksong. Why is that?

and after they died of exhaustion they get sent to the Whiteward to be stitched up again and revived to work even more. If they don't get revived their silk dregs are harvested, they get cremated and their remains disposed down into the lava (based on one of the lore scrolls).
I haven't played through Act 3 so I might be missing more info but I get the idea that their bodies fossilize and become shards, which are then mined again in the deep docks and brought up to the cauldron to be fashioned into cogwork workers. The silk dregs are probably respooled and used again on other workers or the cogwork workers themselves. So in a way they're doomed to work forever.
>>
I finished the game but I get the feeling I'm missing a white palace equivalent. Silksong's ultimate platforming challenge. Because not even once in this whole game are you actually required to use all your platforming tools in tandem to any great degree: there's always slack. I assume I just haven't found it.

So where is it?
>>
>>720442185

yeah, forever is what the GMS hoped it would last for but Pharloom was already in its 'death throes' as per Trobbio's bestiary entry. Not sure what 'death of silk' is if thats an Act 3 thing, but its apparent to me that GMS was gathering up Weavers born in foreign lands probably because she was running out of silk/dying and needed a successor, and maybe Lace was an attempt at creating an artificial one.

Nah, Sister of the Void is the best ending. In Weaver Queen, Hornet is pretty much subsumed by Silk, Hornet's desire was not to become a true Higher Being, she just wanted to go back to Hallownest. The Weaver Queen ending is basically the same as The Hollow Knight ending in the first game, the main character succeeds the role of their predecessor, but where The Knight merely became the new body to contain The Radiance, Hornet is more directly continuing the rule of Silk.

Sisters of the Void by contrast shows Hornet pushing the Void back, ensuring that without access to Silk's power (which was given to Hornet to perform the escape) it would remain confined to The Abyss. Although yes, Pharloom is heavily damaged during Act 3, all the bugs are freed from Silk (and The Void's) control and Hornet is able to return to Hallownest. You could argue that Pharloom is physically in better condition in the Weaver Queen ending since it wasn't damaged by The Void, however it would remain a trap for the bugs within to eventually become ensnared and would be without freedom.

The Twisted Bud steals Silk from Hornet while she's infected. in Weaver Queen ending, Hornet has to take the Higher Being powers of Silk into herself hence becoming the new ruler of Pharloom. In the Twisted Bud ending, the parasite usurps this process and takes the powers of the Higher Being within itself. The ending slide shows that the coccoon it had created for itself out of Hornet and I'm guessing Silk too, begins to hatch, so the parasite becomes the new higher being.
