The game that inspired Hideo Kojima.
>>720553614I always thought it was weird that the sprite on the box is completely different from the one in the game.
>>720553614I was one of the few people I knew with that on its own cart (got the Deluxe Set; which game with R.O.B., Gyromite, and Duck Hunt; and had to buy SMB separately).
>>720554329*cameTyped on a PC, oddly enough, and I still fucked it up.
>>720553614This was the game that inspired Super Mario Bros 2
Legitimately has aged well.HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!
>>720554970It's painfully short unless you're autistic and play it suboptimally.>1-1>1-2>4-1>4-2>8-1>8-2>8-3>8-4 (which takes some skill, but isn't insanely difficult)You're only playing 25% of the game for an optimal run.
>>720555078Why would you intentionally miss out on 75% of the game
>>720555254It's unnecessary, like eating water chestnuts in your Chinese food.
>>720555078If you used even a single warp zone, you didn't beat the fucking game by any stretch of imagination. Play all the levels or suck a nigger dick, your choice.
>>720555395>game has mechanic>you're not allowed to use said mechanic
>>720553614Isn't it kind of weird to focus the anniversary specifically around Super Mario Bros when the Mario Bros came out first? The 40th anniversary of Mario Bros was already 2 years ago
>>720555078It's only painfully short because you know about the warps. We didn't know were they were the first time you played it.
>>720555805A lot of people only played shitty ports of that and have bad memories.
>>720555078No one did that when they played it the first time.
>>720555078Optimal Super Mario Bros playthrough>1-1>1-2>1-3>1-4>2-1>2-2>2-3>2-4>3-1>3-2>3-3>3-4>4-1>4-2>4-3>4-4>5-1>5-2>5-3>5-4>6-1>6-2>6-3>6-4>7-1>7-2>7-3>7-4>8-1>8-2>8-3>8-4
>>720556243based. You beat the game.>>720555078You did not beat the game.
>>720555805Mario Bros. was cool and all, but SUPER Mario Bros. was a revolution.
>>720556413I rescued the princess.
>>720555078people like you is the reason why the japanese mario 2/lost levels made you go backwards or kill yourself
>>720556663The real one is in another castle
>>720556243Based.
>>720556669I never played it. I remember seeing it in a magazine (Mario was running on the ceiling, I believe). I enjoyed the fuck out of SMB2US, though. Being able to scroll backwards, the pickup and throw mechanics, etc were neat.
>>720553614>super mario brosWhy is this treated like some holy grail of gaming when the controls are fucked up beyond belief? It's SO fucking slippery it's unreal. It always bothered me that nobody talks about this fact
>>720556975zoomer opinions are worth less than shit
>>720557149I'm 33 retard, I grew up playing this shit. Answer me.
>>720556663At what cost though? You left 7 castles behind to be ruled by King Koopa's troops.
>>720557443Princess hummers dull the pain.
>>720557183Luigi in SMB2JP is slippery. Neither Mario nor Luigi are slippery in SMB. They carry a small amount of momentum, but it's perfectly adaptable and you get used to it after 5 minutes with the game if you're not a shitter
>>720557706Peach would never do such a thing with her BFF Mario.
>>720556975have you tried getting good at video games maybe
I game over'd on world 8. If I use the continue trick I have to start as smol Mario so it's too hard. Game holds up though. It's still fun.
>>720557808>>720557970>it's the player's fault the controls are utterly abhorrentGood grief. You poor, poor retards. Holy shit.
>>720558051The controls aren't abhorrent. You're just bad at the game. There's a huge difference>imagine getting filtered by bing bing wahoo
>>720556975You've had 40 years to get good.
>>720558128I like the game, it's just the controls are absolutely beyond trash. Mario and Luigi are slippery as FUCK, it's as if the ground and platforms are covered in oil you have to play around that. You're literally trying to deny reality like some sort of indoctrinated leftist. Just stop it
>>720558051if the controls were 'abhorrent' in any way it wouldn't be beatable. the controls are consistent and simple. you're delusional if you think some poorly aged physics are reason to be so hyberbolic about a classic.
>>720558130>you're a shit player if you point out Mario and Luigi's silly ice skating physics on solid bricksYeah this conclusion totally works
>>720558290>if the controls were 'abhorrent' in any way it wouldn't be beatableIt's beatable even with Mario and Luigi doing their best Stars Dance on Ice impressions.>you're delusional if you think some poorly aged physics are reason to be so hyberbolic about a classicAren't controls one of the most important aspects of a video game though?
>>720556975ive never understood this complaint. i always found SMB to feel very solid. in fact i like how it controls compared to the other games.
>>720559717>in fact i like how it controls compared to the other games. You like the ice skating?
>>720559717Especially when you look at Castlevania.>am I going to miss this ledge by a toenail, or am I going to skid in on my knees?
>>720559779>miss this ledge by a toenailSounds like a skill issue, friend.
>>720555540They literally added them because game journalists couldn't beat the full game. You are better than game journalists, right?
>>720561470>They literally added them because game journalists couldn't beat the full gameWere they having journalism issues back in 1985?
>>720561470>game journalists from 40 years ago
>hit startNow what do I do?
>>720561928take out the time traveler
>>720561928Get the power up
>>720561470>catering to "game journalists" in 1985
>>720555805That's barely a game, it had a lot of promotion during the Game Boy Advance release and no one really cared.
I beat it.without save stateson a famiclone
I beat the game on a NES when I was 4
>>720555805No, Mario bros. is not as phenomenal as og Donkey Kong or SMB. Just middle ground.
>>720553614How long did it take you to beat the game when you first played it? It took my dad a week, and then he taught me all the tricks.
You know it to be true
>>720564967>Sunshine too high>Mario3 too low>NSMB too high>World WAY too low>Wonder too low>haven't played 3D World or SMB2JP
>>720564967New! Super Mario Bros goes on A, same with SMW and SMB3, you are missing out on Super Mario 3D Land and Bowser's Fury, Fury is such a great game, except for the boss fights, they are ass.
>>720554789Well actually...
>>720555078>>720555858>>720556153>>720555395The first warp zone is too easy to find. There's no way you didn't find it yourself by your third playthrough of that level
>>720565104>Sunshine too highIt has some major flaws but the FLUDD mechanics are still more fun than the games below it>Mario3 too lowThere's too many autoscrollers and the Tanooki trivializes too much of the level design, so even though it's great otherwise, it ends up being worse than SMB1 as a whole>NSMB too highIt has better and more consistent level design than World>World WAY too lowWorld is one of the worst 2D platformers I have ever played and I will never understand what people see in it. It's just SMB3 but worse in every conceivable way. The cape trivializes the level design even more than the Tanooki ever did, the graphics are somehow uglier than its NES predecessors, the music arguably sounds worse, etc. It is not a good Mario game, or a good video game in general.>Wonder too lowOutside of Wonder's visual style, it's just a collection of gimmicks that wear off as soon as you've seen them once. It has no staying power, as evidenced by the fact that it was essentially forgotten a week after it came out.
>>720553614Just did a no continues run in honor of its releaseshame Nintendo did fuck all for the direct
>>720553614>Shitty slippery ice controls>Recycled levels and assets>Has only 2 good music tracks>Final boss is shit>Ending is a sneed tier jokeIt was never good.
>>720565878Why do so many people get filtered by momentum physics in platformers? The momentum is why the game feels good to play to begin with, it's not "slippery ice controls".
>>720564967No one really likes Yoshi's Island that much. It's a game that drew admiration for technical accomplishment on the SNES, and also because the Nintendo bonus to review scores was enormous in those days, even in multiplatform magazines, and especially when Shigeru's name was involved. Yoshi's Island was a prestigious ornament to be placed on the vidya mantlepiece and fawned over by the kind of queers who are partial to such behaviour. But actually PLAYING Yoshi's Island is an underwhelming experience. It's a decent puzzle platformer that doesn't really square with the "Super Mario" designation, which would be alright if not for Mario being shoehorned into this not-Mario game as a baby who torments you by repeating his single WAAAH sound effect every single time you get hit, which happens very often, the game being fairly tough. Drove me nuts.
>>720553614I'm gonna be honest. I never really cared all that much for the original SMB. Something with it never clicked for me. I spent more time playing TMNT and Kid Icarus.
I made this webm for a different thread but never got to post it. Might as well do it now. It's a TAS side by side.

>>720566398>No one really likes Yoshi's Island that much.I do.>It's a game that drew admiration for technical accomplishment on the SNES, and also because the Nintendo bonus to review scores was enormous in those days, even in multiplatform magazines, and especially when Shigeru's name was involved.I was a Sega kid and was ignorant of what games were hyped or popular because all I cared about was Sonic. I didn't play the game until it was released on GBA and loved it instantly, and by then it wasn't technologically impressive at all.>It's a decent puzzle platformer that doesn't really square with the "Super Mario" designation, which would be alright if not for Mario being shoehorned into this not-Mario game as a baby who torments you by repeating his single WAAAH sound effect every single time you get hit, which happens very often, the game being fairly tough. This sounds like a skill issue.YI has the best level design and is definitely the most creative game in the classic 2D series, and the amount of depth there is with the egg mechanics trumps anything in any other 2D Mario game. It also doesn't have any of the issues with overpowered powerups breaking the level design, because it's just Yoshi the entire game (minus his transformations, but they're given their own designated segments).
@720566590Not even worth a (You).
>>720566590I'd have to put 2 up there with 3 on the S tier. Odyssey also deserves at least B if not for coneja sexa.
>>7205668452 is not even an actual mario game thoughever
>>720566943even doe it literally is
>>720566943Doki Doki Panic started as a Mario game.
>>7205536142d Mario peaked here
Just fired up the original NES Mario for the first time in years, it's amazing how well it holds up after all this time. It still feels incredible to play and better than most 2D platformers.
