From what I gather there was some sort of infection spreading but no matter how much they tried even researching souls wasn't enough, with the Hunter theorizing that the infection actually comes from the inside.I assume my character is some sort of exception to the rule as someone corrupted but that remains sane since Hornet attacked him straight away calling him a ghost but in the 2nd encounter she realized he was different, while the Hunter's notes on the shade left behind indicate it isn't something unique to him and many other bugs leave a shade when they die.

If you explored the fungal caverns west of the city a bit you'd find a vendor with a charm that increases damage by a LOT, if you're confident in your skills that thing really makes a difference. Timing on the juggles also helped, like when 4 start coming out it helped to delay the first hit and hit the rest early to make them line up together better.
