If you initiate the first romance with magic shit and don't think about The Gay or tell him off afterwards the game still continues on as if romancing him is still an option. I started my first game with a caster and thought he was going to give one of us a bonus ability or something like dragon age. Once I realized it was the romance route I told him no every other time but it still took until act 3 for it to finally break off. The other companion's first romance scenes are very obvious. Meanwhile the karlach romance is actually kind of hard to trigger if you get her late because you have to have it set up before the camp party.
