The castle gets captured in a magic force field, Mario runs in and is separated from Luigi, Mario finds Peach is frozen and being used for some energy, thing, and that reality is warped meaning he needs to traverse through the paintings to get around road blocks in the castle all the while seeing bits and pieces of the wider mushroom kingdom in paint form. Along the way Mario has his first encounter with Yoshi, Wario, then Bowser jr. ending with the three meeting up with Luigi who got in through the castles sewage system. They fight Bowser and win. like this shit isn't that hard, they could also have a sequel hook by explaining the painted worlds came about from the Magic Brush that appears in Sunshine and show Bowser jr stealing it before getting kicked out with his dad by Mario.
