This is okay, but I really don’t get what the fuss is about or how it’s better than any other CRPG. Why did people hype it up like the second coming of Christ? The more I play, the more it feels like incels and troons (but I repeat myself) just lost their minds over the sex scenes and convinced the whole internet it was a good game. I’m also pretty sure this only won GOTY since Starfield sucked so much and they wanted to give it to a competing game.
>>
>>720607017
I mostly agree. If the entire game matched the quality of Act 1, then I'd say it's worthy of the hype
>>
>>720607017
First vidya RPG I've played in a long time where being a mage meant more than being a glass cannon with fire/ice animations
>>
>>720607017
It has extremely high production values and was heavily advertised. It's also a good game, of course, but that has less to do with it's success.
>>
It's a high budget fantasy RPG in current year that isn't Dragon Age. That's literally it.
If it looked like D:OS or an Owlcat game it'd be considered completely unremarkable.

Because it felt like a return to form for a genre of game that had been spiraling the drain. Between the slow death of Bioware and Bethesda embodying quantity over quality, BG3 was just a solid blend of diverse CRPG mechanics and polished character interaction in a chunky semi-branching story. Couple that with the fact it had no forced microtransaction gimmicks or elements chopped out for DLC, and people ran with it.

But yeah, the fact that every companion character is openly horny for you probably didn't hurt the marketing.
>>
Do you think it will ever go under $50 or should I just bite the bullet now?
>>
>>720607017
it the first big budget crpg in a long time. now we have to wait ten more decades before we get another crpg.
>>
>>720607017
In terms of quest progression openness and sheer production values, it's largely unmatched in other CRPGs (unless you start going to stuff like Ultima for quest stuff).
It's not that what they did is exceptionally good. It's largely nobody else is doing it, with that level of production values.
You will never get a CRPG with this amount of choice/alternate means of quest progression/missable content because the suits will see it as "wasted man hours" if it's not seen by everyone.

Only CRPGs made in non-American countries can compete with this. If they had the desire to.
>>
>>720608442
If the price is an issue, honestly just pirate it. It is on GOG. They already sold a shit ton of copies, more than they expected, you're not exactly hurting them at this point.
>>
>>720607017
Honestly the story is pretty gay and so are the characters. In everything else it's near 10/10
>>
>>720607017
It's made specifically for the Critical Role audience so the fags that soiface over that will soiface over this too.
>>
>>720607017
>Why did people hype it up like the second coming of Christ?
They were paid to
>>
>>720608872
Not particularly, this was started long before Critical Role's success.
It's sort of a backlash to when Hasbro/WotC started becoming a lot more censor-heavy and heavyhanded in between NWN1 and 2, where Obsidian was forced to turn a canonical brothel from the tabletop game into a "totally normal bar" despite Ed Greenwood having zero issues with brothels in his setting.

The new people gave Larian a lot of leeway to go crazy.
...then Hasbro/WotC fired a shit ton of people, including all the WotC people who consulted with Larian, and WotC is returning to being heavy-handed again.

BG4 is going to be a dumpster fire, I feel sorry for whoever receives teh project.
>>
>>720607017
>This is okay, but I really don’t get what the fuss is about or how it’s better than any other CRPG.
Production values. Other CRPGS equal BG3 in mechanics, but they have simple isometric viewpoints even in narrative scenes and no closeups and performance capture. Most aren't even fully voiced. On the other hand, there are graphically demanding RPGs that instead use very simplified RPG mechanics. The last game to really try to do both fully before BG3 was Dragon Age Origins and that game is still beloved.
>>

Dragon Age: Origins was Bioware's answer to Hasbro/WotC's at-the-time heavy hand on what they'd allow their licensees to do in their D&D games (not TOO dark, not TOO adult). So it was the first step towards what would eventually appear as BG3.

It was scaled back a bit in terms of content because, at the time, they didn't believe they could do that level of production value with a bg2-level of content.

It's actually why I thought /v/ was yanking my penis when they were saying BG3 would have flopping penises and shit. I never believed Hasbro/WotC woudl allow it.

Not at all, DOS2 comes close but the rest are way too strict with how you interact with the world mechanically and structurally. WoTR, beautiful game that I adore, but it has twenty million classes and like maybe 5 playstyles between them. Even just being able to jump and the systems around that add so much to Baldur's Gate 3 like the strength scaling, feather fall for traversal, sequence breaking that they game accounts for, etc.

I'd love to pretend it was because it's DnD, but honestly not really. Sword Coast Legends was DnD, but it flopped hard and was removed from Steam.
I think /v/ might not like this, but I honestly think appealing to women with the sexual themes was HUGE for viral marketing, and enough to keep those same women talking about the game in online spaces (much like they would for Twilight or Undertale). I don't think it's a coincidence that the twinky vampire boyfriend that you can fix is the most popular character.

It had an actually functional tactical camera, and simplified (relative to TTRPG conversions), but still fairly extensive character building. Yes, it's not Wishes, Timestops and Chain Contingencies. But there's enough there that I have no problem calling in an actual CRPG rather than some form of ARPG.

BG1/2 was a lot of fun for their times.
BG1 was kind of basic, but a very solid 2nd edition AD&D game, especially compared to the Gold Box-style AD&D and Eye of the Beholders before it (much as I loved them at the time).
Then BG2 was the first western CRPG to put a lot more into their companion characters with actual backstories, plus romance (which shaped almost all CRPGs after it, for better or for worse).

BG3 is built on the backs of CRPGs before it. That's not bad, that's what it SHOULD do, but it's everything that came before it packaged in very extensive production values.

It's not really the build depth that makes the game, but the narrative choices/quest openness.
From interviews, it seems Larian is well aware of the limitations of 5e DnD and prefer their own systems. (even though I personally hope they NEVER do DOS/DOS2 style of MMO-like itemization, I prefer BG3's itemization)

The production values are very high with the top tier voice acting and character animation. And then there's the le heckin immersive sim gameplay or whatever.

I love the scale of the city and the day-to-day stuff you can encounter with the changing newspapers.
I have Lae'zel built for crazy jumping, so she can jump from building to building, which is not inherent to Act 3 itself, but I found a lot of fun.
BG1/2 was super small scale, but was fine for the time, but it was awesome actually seeing a much bigger representation of a fantasy city in a CRPG, especially for having the power level you have by the time you're in the city.

In Act 1 and 2, even though I enjoyed them, there's a lot of just sort of empty space in between points you're getting to. The city of Baldur's Gate feels full and filled with life.
But keep in mind, I never got to Act 3 back when it had the performance issues I heard so much about, so I didn't have my experienced soured by that.
>>
>>720611909

This is pretty much it, you go into any BG3 thread and it's all about the romance. Most of the actual players are probably people on story mode or whatever for the romance, the rest is botting from the chinese. That said, most of the discussion around any CRPG seems to be about the romance.

Personally as standard it makes a lot of sense to run you PC as a face with one of the CHA based classes, it helps that they're all pretty powerful. But the simplest run with the most party flexibility is probably a Swords Bard 10/Fighter 2 archer build. Since you are a party face, locks/traps guy, support mage and incredibly lethal fighter all in one. Companions I usually try to respec them into a more powerful spec that still fits their general concept. For example, for Lae'Zel that's been Eldritch Knight with Booming Blade to abuse War Magic since Patch 8. But Arcane Archer, Battlemaster or Throwing EK work well for a Githyanki too. Shadowheart gets respeced to Death and may switch to Light depending. Gale is either left Invoker or made Diviner or Abjurer, etc. Honestly though, the game isn't so hard that you absolutely need to optimize everything. I've even run Astarion as straight Arcane Trickster before, and that's generally considered one of the weakest classses, Arcane Ambush is not that bad. The only classes I really would suggest avoiding for single or multiclass are Drunken Master monk, Champion Fighter, and Hunter Ranger. And the latter two are mainly because they're boring as hell.
>>
As someone who liked BG3, you must be joking when you seriously want to discuss builds for that game. Literally just click on whatever during a level up and you'll be fine. Yes really.
>>
>>720615213
How's the environmental interactivity work with class picks? The DivOS games were pretty tight with that and I understand Larian kept that in, but the use of 5E systems makes me wonder if they reworked what I'm used to.

>>720615372
environmental interactivity is still present, but very subdued as compared to OS2. You can do some strong stuff with water and lightning, and there's some decent spells that create floor hazards like firewall, or ice storm to create a big slipping hazard but you're not shitting cursed bloody fire every turn. In exchange there is more to play with in the environment that can help, like shooting down a light fixture onto people's heads, more bottomless pits to push people into, the ability to pick up environmental objects to use as weapons or to throw like chairs barrels etc. etc.

There's mobility to tack advantage of verticality and various pushes and/or forced movement effects to shove people to their death. Also the Wet condition is super strong for boosting Lightning and Cold magic so the Create Water spell ends up quite strong. There's also lots of goofy stuff you can do with explosives. But it's not as extensive as DoS2. The nature of D&D5e tabletop is just that it cares a lot more about what the PCs and monster can do than what the environment is. So that limited Larian a bit.

(Personally prefer BG1 though)

turn on the weighted dice option for less RNG, spastic weirdo

I disagree, I quite liked it. Having to deal with shocking water in OS2 was a nightmare for any melee character because of how widespread it could be, you're already weak to magic based CC thanks to the DOGSHIT armor system and just touching the water slightly ended your turn instantly. You can still set up hazardous terrain in BG3, it's just not as oppressive as it was in OS2.

Something I always enjoyed doing in actual tabletop was wacky environmental shit ala Goblin Slayer, DivOS pretty much being that was top tier. At least there's some things like that you can do in BG3.
>>
>>720615782
I don't have any of my manuals or discs anymore, but I haven't thought of that in ages.
Thanks for the nostalgia shot. Those were good times.

I bet you're the kind of pussy who reloads every time any diceroll doesn't go your way. go play CoD if you can't deal with RNG bozo

Because it's a porno dating sim

only way you could possibly think this is if your only exposure to the game is 4chan posts
>>

Okay, tell me about your favorite non-boss encounter in the game.
>>
DOS1 and 2 are actual shit

Genuinely surprised Larian managed to make the best CRPG of all time with BG3, must have had Hasbro people breathing pretty heavy down their necks during development.
>>
>>720615953
this is some "Mass Effect is a sex simulator, it's not an XBox it's the SeXBox" late 2000's nonsense.
>>
>>720615307
>>720615449
Actual feats are mostly irrelevant outside of a few outliers like Tavern Brawler, Great Weapon Fighter, Sharpshooter, and to a lesser extent Polearm Master and Sentinel. Many characters only end up with two feats thanks to multiclassing and just take two ability score improvements to max out their primary stat. That said sure you can just pick a class and single class the whole way. But between fully open multiclassing and all the subclasses available there's quite a bit of variety and optimization available in character building.
>>
>>720615943
you are trash at vidya, crusty bald unc
>>
>>720616097
It literally is a porno dating sim though, that's why it's so popular
>>
>>720616097
You're right, most of Mass Effect is garbage console cover shooter gameplay with zero challenge or excitement.
>>
>>720616168
Still more actual game than the 'rpgs' of today which are just porn vns
>>
>>720616214
I don't disagree with that, which is why I keep calling out both kinds of fags. People who have nostalgia for Mass Effect are no different from people who think BG3 is the greatest RPG ever.
>>
>>720616082
DOS1/2 was them building up their team for that style of game.
If you play them in order, you can actually see them get better from game-to-game, which is kind of cool (if you can put up with the silliness of DOS 1)

Surprisingly enough, WotC very specifically were NOT heavily involved in the specifics for BG3, they were largely very hands-off "do what you want" and were largely lore consultants with maybe some suggestions apparently.
But then Hasbro/WotC laid all those people off way later on (and it's believed they're going to be far more hands-on, possibly censor-heavy all over again like the 2000's.)
>>
>>720616045
the halsin portal defense encounter easily. You gotta defend the portal for a set amount of turns while waves of enemies keep spawning, loads of opportunities for huge cleaves with magic and if you build a martial with polearm master you can set up a good melee wall because you'll get attacks of opportunity when some bozo tries to bumrush the portal past you.
>>
>>720616168
Talking specifically about that post's retarded "hrr durr it's a porno simulator" nonsense. Literally some Mass Effect "it's a sex simulator" nonsense, which is simultaneously hilarious and cringe.
>>
>>720616375
Take your meds
>>
>>720616321
I see no problems with ME1. It's a decent RPG, I'd say even a pretty good one.
>>
Retard coomers are big mad they got exposed

it's a known schizo
also why he projected with the "take your meds" thing, because he used to get that posted towards him all the time
>>
>>720616406
And that makes you the target audience for BG3. You will never "get it" and that's okay. It's just video games at the end of the day.
>>
>>720616406
it's alright. problem with basically every bioware RPG post BG2 is that you are not allowed to multiclass. Kotor sort of lets you with jedi classes and the prestige jedi classes in 2 but in ME and DA you're locked to one class the entire game. And somehow DA has less class variety than Mass Effect.
>>
>>720616467
Are you seriously so mentally ill that any criticism of the game gets applied to this boogeyman that apparently lives rent free in your vacuous skull
>>
>>720616489
I guess as long as it makes sense inside that little head of yours...
>>
>>720616467
Nigger I was talking about Mass Effect, don't you dare confuse me for the CCP schizo.
>>
>>720616596
Coomers are totally brainfucked and will fall over defending their waifuslop.
>>
>>720616534
I've never understood people liking any of the Dragon Age games. Extremely boring, trite setting, barely any build variety, that fucking repetitiveness of everything. It's so bad I wouldn't even be able to say it's better than BG3 without lying.

DA:O has a pretty interesting setting and decent character writing which carries the experience but DA:O was basically babies first CRPG when it released so lots of people look back on it fondly because it was their first exposure to the genre. Build variety and such is ass though I agree entirely, I replayed most of it recently and got bored before I went into the deep roads.
>>
>>720616467
>it's a known schizo
That explains the weird responses.
Fucking /v/.
>>
>>720614028
I think act 3 has the best encounters by far, act 1 encounters are kinda bland in comparison. Also it's nice actually wrapping up those game long quest even if a couple of them end up underwhelming.

Should I be dual-wielding or dueling as a Swashbuckler?
>>
>>720618440
Largely up to you, but I generally dual-wield just as an extra attempt if I miss with the attack (ensuring that sneak attack)
If the main attack lands, I might use that bonus action for one of the cunning actions.
>>
>>720607017
it's a CRPG that's actually fun to play. Combat is fun, exploration is fun, talking to NPCs and doing skill checks is fun.
The dating sim elements are actually one of the weakest parts
>>
>>720619483
What's so fun about the NPCs in the game?
>>
>>720615213
I don't understand what everyone is complaining about with Drunken Master. It's leagues better than Four Elements, while being fun as fuck. It's also one of the few new subclasses introduced in Patch 8 that isn't just a mere reskin of other older subclasses (i.e., it features new animations, has gear specifically tailored to the subclass, etc). Is it as strong as Way of the Open Hand? Obviously not. But it's still decent enough to content with the likes of the Shadow Monk. If you want the truly boring classes, stick with a Tav/Dyrge Warlock, and be in awe at just how truly lame your Patron is compared to Mizora.
>>
>>720614725
Both you and Sawyer sounds like massive faggots. No wonder New Vegas was filled with gays and raped lesbians.
>>
>>720619483
i think its due to production value. nice 3d models, voiceacting, animations, spell effects ect, every other crpg looks like walls of text and bg3 is more in line with modern aaa games
>>
>>720615787
skill issue
>>
>>720619615
can't speak directly for him, but there's a lot of NPCs that have some fun interactions, like the washing my pits gnome in Act 3, and the bird that talks like a General if you have Speak with Animals.
>>
>>720619615
lots of effort put into them both in terms of presentation with the voice acting and the amount of dialog, including a lot of class and race unique options, you can have with many of them.
You can also talk to almost anyone and for being a CRPG you're often reasonably free in what you can say
