Good to know the Survival mode is still there. I'll check it out and get back to you. I'm glad you liked the haiku: I'm not really a poet so it's not going to be as cool as my works of prose, and I tried to stave my desire to talk about dragons since you don't really talk about dragons in haikus.
On another note, appreciate your comment. That scuba guy is actually a spaceman, more accurately Lieutenant Joseph Fyrondis of the Galactic Bureau of Security Army. I was having way too much fun posing him and I made a shitload of silly renders of him in cool poses.

For 2D, yes. Although I would recommend a framework like RayLib to save yourself a bunch of time.

For 3D, it's a nightmare because there aren't really any simple standalone 3D rendering libraries. And even when you think you've found one and spend weeks getting it to work, you'll realize it doesn't support animation or glsl or some bullshit and you'll want to give up and cry.

If design documents aren't working out for you, look into agile development (or just user stories).
As an example with this idea guy's >>720611276 one
> As the player (role)
> I would like chickens to pop/fly out of wrecked cars (goal)
> So that I can score more points and shoot more stuff that isn't just eye level (reason)
It's still basically one sentence but it's gotten me out of thinking "Get everything done." and running out of steam.

And they do exist. I know one personally.
>>

Timely reply
1. Bloods are particles that request a splat once they settle
2. Splat system is a viewport that takes a photo of the isolated particles and creates a sprite out of that
3. Sprite fades in smoothly over the original particles, and the particles are deleted
4. Once the fading ends, the splat sprite is blended into the quadrants it's overlapping
Particle -> Splat Sprite -> Quadrant Texture

Quadrant textures are a 512x512 grid across the level, the splats are baked at no additional cost no matter how many you get. This allows for complex animated effects like particles I wouldn't get as easily with something like painting on a splatmap.

One of the worst things you can do in a field of creativity is work with other people on one project. Unless you happen to find people who share your views enough to not encroach on your designs but also challenge you to make them the best they can be (which, in the modern age of political brainrot and internet addicted coomers, good fucking luck), working with anyone is outright self-sabotage.

Use Godot bitch, it's free and lightweight and probably the only bright future between the big 2. You can spend all your autism in developing plugins for it if something is "missing from it" instead of wasting time with "hur dur my own engine" troon shit. There are plenty high definition demos for it out there so making 3A style slop isn't impossible either.

First, define success.

Second, anything past 1k rewives is a major success in these parts, you ain't making shit here, especially when talking about "custom engines".

Third, as I said, if you have autism to think of custom engines, you might as well use it on existing free and light weight on, aka - Godot, if anything you will help people with some pluginga at least.

Forth, if by "success" you mean UE looking slopa, again, as I said demos are other, it's just no one autistic enough to finish them, you can refere to point 3 in this case.

And lastly... You can see it for yourself (Godot Engine · SteamDB https://share.google/33JCGcIl4ZMSWLSOz)

Also have been diving into AI workflows. I am putting in an anime opening into the game. I don't care what the community thinks about AI art and if they boycot my game because of it. I will be one of the first devs who implements a fully AI workflow for art. Also been doing image to 3D.

Nano banana (gemini flash 2.5 image) for image and video. Finally a model that is good enough in terms of quality. Not enough parameters yet, so I still mix with Stable Diffusion for upscaling.

Meshy, Tripo, Rodin for image to 3D. They all offer the same workflow you would think there is only one and the same server farm/company behind it. For static models it's becoming good enough. For characters not good enough yet.
>>
>>720619528
Wouldn't it make more sense to do your intro in 3D? You're investing in learning an AI workflow for specific, static intro where learning how do facial animation for your models would help you throughout the entire game.
>>
>>720620963
Thanks for the information. How long are you planning on making the intro? That's a lot more than I expected to be able to do with movement, but I'm imagining anything too complicated of an action + camera movement starts causing problems. Too bad the workflow for 3d character models isn't quiet there yet, but at least it's decent static models. How familiar were you with 3d models already before using the 3d stuff? I imagine it requires a good amount of clean-up, so you have to know at least a little to be able to make it really viable for use. I'm not good at 3d, so I'm hoping they'll improve it soon.

I already invested heavily in facial animation. I have made a fully automated lip synch workflow, but that is for non cutscenes/non key moments. I have a facial mocap solution for the more interesting moments.

>>>/wsg/5952997

I still want to incorporate anime scenes though, like Eternights does, Hades, tales of series, et cetera.

>>720621597

Somewhere between 30 and 90 seconds. I am not so familiar with 3D. I am a programmer, not a 3D artist. Basically, I am going for what looks good with decent enough polygon count and not too bad topology. Image to 3D workflows now offer a retopologize function, so the days of 500k+ polygon gens that are a complete mess are over.

it will be expensive sure
but id rather have that than some quick ai generation without an ounce of authenticity
whether some dont want to admit or acknowledge it - a player will pick up on something being off subconsciously

If your game is dialogue heavy then using AI voice sounds like a pretty bad idea. They sound fake as hell the more they drone one and it will make your game seem like cheap Chinese shit. If you're just using it for casual enemy banter that has a good variety of voices then that should be fine

>They sound fake as hell the more they drone one and it will make your game seem like cheap Chinese shit.
You can make them sound good by either putting in effort and curating generated samples or using the AI as a voice changer.

>>720632141

Exactly. It is a cost saving measure. Plus it matches my 'experiment now, choose later' strategy. Some developers have everything pinned down before going into production. I make it up along the way.

The fact that I can generate this character consistent image in less than a minute is nothing less than a technological marvel.

Implemented enemy waves. A group of enemies spawn in from some side, you beat them, more groups spawn in. I intend to implement proper mechanics when you beat a level and move on to the next, but for now it just resets the current level.

Still need to implement some more powerups and obstacles as well.

This looks a lot better, you could probably amp up the hitstop on heavier attacks though. Light attacks should always be less committal with minimal or no hit-stop. It may not be a problem right now but when you start adding more challenge and variety to your enemy groups that give the player more things to keep track of, you don't want them feeling stuck when they're throwing out their safest move. This will be very apparent if you start adding in enemies with projectiles that would be pelting the player while they're mid-swing.
I don't think hitstop should be something that you can change in the settings since that should be a balancing factor when you're designing enemies. You have to be careful with hitstop and hitstun otherwise you fuck up your game like Ring Racers did

it's one shader material with picrel as it's shader. First I set it as material overlay, to turn the enemy black while keeping it's original albedo below it. Then, I set it as material override instead, and proceed to lower the alpha. Might be better ways of doing this, probably, but this works.

My current goal is to have my game ready for the Next Fest in February - kinda bad timing since it's a bit far away while the one next month is too soon, but I'm sure that between updating the visuals, working out weird hardware bugs and hiring voice actors everything will end up taking longer than I expect. Going to be scary having to lock in parts of the game by releasing a demo, especially parts involving the overall story, but everyone says that if you don't gather wishlists your game will be dead on arrival so it's not like I have a choice.
Has anyone here gotten voice acting done for any of their projects? I'm curious what the turn around time is, what level of direction is expected, how viable it is to split up the lines between my demo and full game, etc.
>>
What's this feast people speak of?
>>
>>720654848
I think my game could be ready by February, but I saw that Slay the Spire is launching in March so my roguelike would be competing with that pretty hard. Maybe I'd wait until April?
>>
>>720655271
Next Fest is for demos, if your game is ready by then you could just release it. But I think that you want to have a demo of some kind to boost visibility.
>>
going to take a day off game deving. Wish you make tons of progress dudes.
>>
>>720633203
ai voice acting will eclipse real voice acting because its simply the best solution. no rerecording, less memory usage, easier to implement, cheaper, multilanguage support, etc.
>>
>>720655707
Yeah, it's there to get a nice popularity boost. People play a lot of demos because they're so low-commitment, event FOMO helps too probably and sense of sharing discoveries.
Then like two months to iron out quirks would probably be good.
From what I've heard you want to have "a" demo before the Next Fest, and get that playtested before submitting for the masses.

Hey all, sorry for the long pause on updates. Mostly widget, saving, and potions quickslot fixing. I dont have many pictures I tried something new with photoshop sorry if the image/video is crap.
----main updates----
>quest manager framework has been built. Quests will have main objectives and approaches based on the 4 weapon stances that provided bonus experience based on which approach was taken. All quest information is stored serialized for easy progression saving.
>created 3 quickslots and a secondary weapon slot
>added a simple quickslot selection widget to pick between the 3
>the hud quickslot has a new active slot function and when the left trigger is held it reveals all quickslots and when let go only shows the active.
>when held, use the dpad left or right to cycle between potions
>added confirmation widget to loading, deleting, and overwriting saves.
>inventory navigation when not in the scroll box sets to specific inventory slots.
>all widgets have focus buttons when clicked or pressed with a touchscreen set the current button active to prevent softlocking.

----bug fixes----
>---huge bugfix----fixed inventory from s2crolling when on equipment slots by moving the function to the inventory widget versus the slot child widget.
>saving now stores health progress bar and berserk progress bar correctly as shown in the top video.
---next tasks---
>rebuilding the 4 weapon stances to have full cohesion.
>rebuilding the first ability summon with fire vfx on the cape and sword. Meshes already rebuilt.
>updating enemy ai parent to segment components for easier tracking
>skill menu made based off 4 weapon stances.
>update hud with new textures

You can greatly improve particles, they are kinda too plain.
Same with UI can add some custom borders or something to make it visually interesting.
Maybe add a random spawning chest like in vampire survivors that gives exp or levels.
Maybe some movement "juice", better gun feedback and feel.

Besides that, everything is bare bones so if there is anything to improve is literally everything. Adding props will definitely fuck up the AI but it might be the first addition.

I think I posted about it a few threads back, but I've always found mutilation very fun, so taking a page from IVAN and Dorf Fort Adventure mode I'm aiming to make a game where the main draw is hacking off limbs with well-timed attacks. For the moment my vision is to have a combat system similar to the first parasite eve or Vagrant story, but with the addition that enemy attack animations will influence how exposed certain joints are and how much damage they will take, leading to dismemberment being a reward for exploiting openings.
I'm gonna aim for the stars and actually try for a 3d game.

>but I'm not sure how common VNs really are in the indie space
They're extremely common in the indie scene because they're very low maintenance games that don't really require any coding knowledge to make (unless you make one from scratch) so they're often used by beginners, so the quality varies wildly.

Is there a game or rather rpg that gets layered armor correctly? I want to make layers meaningful, lack any hema knowledge, nor am I good with "damage formulas". Console backporting fucking sucks, there's no engine you can pick that will make it easier.
If you're serious about it it'll be easier to pay a publisher to do it for you.

If you need to learn programming from scratch I wouldn't recommend making an engine, its so much easier using unity for 3D
>>
>>720679987
>there's no engine you can pick that will make it easier
My experience is that that's not true. Some engines do a lot of the heavy lifting here for you, while the others force you to do the tedious things, presumably to ensure you doublecheck them?
>>
>>720610270
Know anyone who has made a cool game and everyone hates?
>>
>>720681761
Getting the game to run on console hardware is the easy part, unless your game does something esoteric or obtuse.

The hard part has always been the laundry list of requirements Nintendo and Sony throw onto you before they'll agree to host your game. No matter what engine you pick, expect 6+ months of extra work if it's your first time. Even paid publishers that know what they're doing take 2-4 months to jump through the hoops. It's nothing like publishing a game on Steam or mobile.
>>
>>720679803
porting godot to switch isn't that hard. if you got approved by nintendo you get access to a free export module i think
>>
>>720682357
And it's a pain in the ass to work with for Godot, unless you want to give another company a large cut to do it all for you.
>>
>>720681941
I'm aware. I'm just saying that with Unity you have to do shit like "oh you can't use persistentdatapath you must use another word for it that Nintendo approved" meanwhile in Gamemaker you don't have to change a single line of code.
The laundry list is not as bad, but it has some funny clauses, like the game being failed because it doesn't run properly in 480p in 2025.

>>
>>720685173
The fact you think Nintendo is going to give enough of a shit about your game to spend the resources to sue you is hilarious.
Nintendo has shilled blatant clones of their own games in their directs before like Wargroove. Unless your game somehow gets Palworld tier popular they won't care (and if your game is on their console, they also won't care.)
>>
>>720685173
Nintendo don't care that much, Palworld is being dragged through the mud because they're pissy they let it get away with being "pokemon but with GUNS" and getting super popular but even then in a case THAT high profile they're still having to edit patents mid-trial to even get it to work in Japan of all places.
Of course this all depends on how close it looks to FE in the first place, if you're tracing sprites I'd be worried but really even Nintendo have trouble patenting a grid based selection system and literal dice rolls. You could play FE on tabletop its so simple.

Last time you brought this up you said publishers urge devs towards certain things, can you expand on that? Like what kinds of things and how pushy are they? Also why did they cut ties with you?
>>
>>720695692
>What went wrong?
Publisher had link with platforms but I really didn't like that they allowed scams and scam-tactics. I repeatedly said I didn't want to be part of it or allow it. They decided I was too difficult to work with. Cut ties.
>Do you think a publisher is necessary?
Do you want to be financially successful? If yes, then yes.
If no, then no.
Some folks, god knows why, just want to publish games without profits. These games are typically trashy and won't be looked at by publishers anyways.
>How much damage has been done to your project now that the publisher is gone?
None. I will continue to work as I have always had. If anything, I learned to make a lot of things, especially visuals, modular to appease different conditions.
>Finding another one or publishing it yourself?
Will find another, but will do so later.

>>720695921
On my side, the publisher pushed a game that was destined to fail after 6 months (not my own). They had a lot of in-game gacha, and they pushed me into gacha as well. I don't mind it and I also added packages that gave you guarantees at very low prices (like 5$ for guaranteed results, instead of gambling).
Well after folks wasted money on that game, both the publisher and platform told players "too bad".
I got wind of that and had lengthy discussions with them and they wouldn't budge and actually encouraged me to do this and move onto a clone project.
Which to me is a scam. Again, we argued. After a lot of back and forth, I was labelled as "too difficult to work with".

So here's a couple of things they push for.
>compliance with credit cards
Surprisingly, this has been going on since 2010. There are a lot of rules that you have to abide to. Examples:
>no gore
>no fluids like urine, vomit, etc.
>nothing non-consensual
There are workarounds, there are things that could be acceptable given certain contexts, but they got a long list of things.
So if you want to make a gore dismemberment sim, forget it.

They also push games as a service and gacha. The worst for the player, the better. This is something I was against, because I don't endorse gambling.
They also push a lot of DEI, even if a cameo, because a lot of syndicates they are buddy with are run by DEI pushers. So if you want to be invited to events, you need to comply. If the publisher vouches for you, it's a free pass. Otherwise, you won't get invited or will be on a waitlist. It's easier to write in a lesbian or something than argue.
Finally, they really chase trends. Sometimes they ask for you to put stuff in there that make no sense and 2 months later, something else even forgoing the previous.

Hence, make your game very modular ready.

I added a really good debug feature for testing stuff in my game. I added Global Positional tracking and rewind. Now, if you press the DPad Down button, you'll rewind 3 or more seconds in the past, positionally. It tracks the last 180 frames, so long as you're not on a moving platform, on the ground and if you're not in the same position you were the frame prior. Holding it in will loop you through the 3 seconds, so you can dial it down to exactly where in the 3 second period you want to stop. Using it multiple times in a row kind of fucks it up, how I have it implemented, but this will GREATLY improve my ability to debug platforming challenges.

Post your game, I want to see if your perspective has any merit
>>
Would you burn a bridge with a former team you worked with if they went on reddit and blamed you for the game failing when even the negative reviews say it's the only good thing about the game? The game already tanked and most of the community turned on them. Feels like it's not worth it but some of the recent comments really pissed me off.
>>
>>720696013
>>Do you think a publisher is necessary?
>Do you want to be financially successful? If yes, then yes.
Publishers and Steam will give you about 40% of revenue. Publishers are a scam
>>
>>720696794
Yes.
I have self-published in the past and it was really hard to advertise or breaching through.
Youtubers had no interest or those that did really sucked at making it look good since they sucked at the game.
If you're all alone, you're also constantly blasted by scammers almost daily.

What publishers bring is contacts, exposure, crowds and deals.
It always depends on the publisher, I cannot comment on which is better, but they can work in your favor considerably, especially if you want to focus on the game instead of doing the rest.
For instance, iii, the triple indie i event. You couldn't have access to this without a publisher having a membership into a video game syndicate vouching for you.
You can also work together to create a following as opposed to doing it wrong on your own.
So if you want $$, you should work with a publisher.
Look at studio mimimi, they decided to forgo the publisher on their later releases and they shut down due to bad sales.

Now if you just want your game out, then it won't matter. Do what you want.

If you want to work with publishers, get a working demo, make it modular, make it easy to work with and contact publishers.
Then ask for terms and conditions, and negotiate.

>>720696975
The current game I am working on isn't even demo ready. I will publish it on here in the future, don't worry.

>>720697220

made a not so secret optional cutscene going into the mc's backstory. also added hitstop to heavy attacks to really make her hits feel meaty. the dwarf mission is otherwise 75% done and should be out on the playable build in a week ideally

Next fest can be a boost but not something you can depend on. My game isn't even going to go on steam, so that's irrelevant.
The biggest issue I had was bad players trying it on youtube and making the game look like crap because they couldn't make a jump.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for instance.
It's a 2D platformer with static portraits. Probably one of the lowest hanging fruit in terms of development.

See the problem is Fygoon's story isn't even complete yet; cutscenes are a bitch, and the story is the most important part of the game. Also doesn't help I spent my entire day reading over business contracts. I only began posting the Impulsehazard Lieutenant because I found his model while creating models for characters who are important to the story of Frydar Island, which were being made as visual aids for my two best friends since they keep pestering me on helping with the backstory of my game as seen in The Zmeian Compendium.

I don't think he's wrong about the youtubers making the game look bad because the youtubers themselves are not presentable, game or otherwise.

so if you're saying you can get by without a publisher if only you had a good game that would make youtubers shill it, what would that game be?

Are any of these considered syndicates?
If not, are syndicates things like Griffin Gaming Partners, BITKRAFT, TGF, or Makers Fund?

This guy is telling us that all of these YouTubers would have skipped the game had it not been for the publisher, and he's right. But I just think that all YouTubers are useless with the review count to show for it.
>>
>>720699672
I've (we've) had some small youtubers play our game and it didn't really give us a bump up. so yeah.
>>
>>720699048
After working with Anons, I beg to differ.
And as >>720699293 said. What happened is a couple of anons and youtubers shilled my game but they were so fucking bad at it that I had to ask them to pull their "reviews" down.
Remember the cuphead reviewer that couldn't dash the tutorial? This is like every other person out there, they really suck at games but they want to be youtubers and reviewers, in spite of no-skills. Most of their hits were walking sims, which should've been a red flag for me...

>>720699405
No, they are sponsors that give money to a syndicate to organize the event itself.
I joined one but I can't talk about it... I had to do a LOT of digging to get them and ask.
You pay a fee and you're in. But you gotta sign a shit-ton of paperwork that basically makes you deny their existence.

Played it again now that I know where to find the survival area. Gotta say, the enemy swordsmen are great: difficult, but hacking them to pieces is quite fun.

>>
>>720699672

And I'd agree. Youtube reviewers aren't all that.
Facebook ads and being on the front page of steam do way better and publishers can get you there.
>>
>>720700091
>You pay a fee and you're in. But you gotta sign a shit-ton of paperwork that basically makes you deny their existence.
Is there any way I, as an outsider, can search for their existence? Not a specific one, but the existence of this...species as a whole, so to speak. You say those companies I listed give them money to organize the event, is this public information or is it something only an insider can know?

Well what can you expect from losers who spend their entire lives on the internet? As soon as they see there are others who support people like me, they will either crawl away or try to dox you.
Aside from that nonsense, it's interesting to see that Facebook ads are better than ads on other sites. Then again, considering how Meta owns both Facebook and Instagram, then it begins to make sense, especially with how scarily accurate their tracking is. It'd be cool to see how this whole shebang would work, and I am curious to know how good it would be to advertise a game that'll be exclusive to the Mac App Store (for about two weeks or so before being released everywhere).

I feel like it should be spaced further so there's less node shoving (and also prevents the passive jitter which seems off). Additionally, I'd argue that you should make the hover expansion slightly more gradual/less sudden than what it is currently.

Final update for the day. I managed to load the proper item counts for all potions, all slots now load an image, but slot 2 is being silly with its potion count number cosmetically but has the right number count in the array. Im so happy to be near 90% complete with consumable quickslots and hud im more ready to work on the quest component for the first set of quests. I intend on having all four forms ready at the start with experience and progressing to build upon each.
Im honestly so happy I fixed the scrollbar issue that was the oldest function I needed to fix.

Trenchbroom is usable for shit other than Quake? I've just been using Blender here and making modular mesh component for layout out my environments & buildings, but if I can just export Trenchbroom maps, that'd let me prototype map layouts fucking quick to populate with proper assets later.
>>
>>720711793

>>
>>720713146

>>
>>720713136
Definitely! Since what i believe are only a few cosmetic bugs once the first area has more gameplay elements ill release a demo.
The big piece to that is making sure the quest manager is at least providing some feedback since I have it ready to update my widgets.
Ill probably release a demo with a save that has freebies to try out.
>>
On the AI subject, here's a hypothetical: If I use it to generate design ideas, and then use those as a reference to build shit myself without the use of generation tools from there, is it still considered AI assisted? How would that be any different from just Googling references and working from those if so?
>>
>>720713573
Outside of twitter that should be fine, people care less about how you get your ideas than about getting a product that people put work into. What could hurt you is if you only take the path of least resistance and make only stuff that is easy with AI, as that will make your game look the same as all the other devs being lazy with AI.

This game is actually awesome but
>chinese voice acting
>MTL english (supposedly fixed in yesterday's patch)
>made by chinese
probably nuked any interest it might've had, both in the west and japan
this game is juiced as fuck and puts Balatro's effects to shame, if any of you likes Mahjong and Balatro this is a great game to take few pages from for your design

You should make sure the balls can't leave from under your cursor randomly.

Been studying other game's of recent for workflow ideas on my own shit. Anyone got a clue as to why the main walls of this building from the TLOU1 remake have so many subdivides? Only thing I can guess is either it's for UV shenanigans, or they just mandate a general standarized texel size on every texture being used.

On that note, I don't even know how you decide what size your standard quad size should be in a game, so you can make everything else around it consistent in that regards so there's no obvious low-poly portion of an environment sticking out like a sore thumb, or overly stretched texture. Least as far as the ground goes, it's looking like half a meter for anything not subdivided.

you need at least 7000 wishlists to be considered a game good enough for being promoted on steam's frontpage

Makes you small. Obviously.
There'll be places you can get to by using my mushroom potions cleverly. You'll also be able to use them on other objects and enemies to make them small.

Nintendo only sues over monster catchers, so unless you make it REALLY look like FE they won't do a thing.

for the moment they serve as ground markings of locations where the player would hypothetically stop up and a shootout would break out with a wave or waves of enemies a la time crisis
ive elevated it to being automated
the player will only move on once all enemies are defeated at a given shout out point
>>
>>720716691
>>720716426
also to add
yeah i intend to make such points be the locations where you you can duck into cover if you press and hold a key
and snap back out once you release it

depends on the purpose. if it's going to be something that the user often goes through, its probably going to cause a lot of misclicks. most menus are supposed to be something you can eventually muscle memory your way through without thinking about it too much.
