Unlike Odyssey you can actually see and walk towards these platform challenges, no loading screens between them. This would be both a course clear and a sandbox style Mario game, the world in between the stages is sandbox and the stages are (mostly)linear. This would be essentially be a true open zone or open world realization of the classic 2D mario games, instead of a level select you can walk inside a sandbox toward the linear stages. I think this would be the next natural step for 3D Mario.
