After playing the game, the main thing I have to criticize is the quest system as a whole. The game itself is generally more structured than HK, more directed, but that makes you lose a little bit of the spontaneous nature of exploring that was such a draw in HK. The alternate route to the city is far more spectacular and polished than what you could do in HK (Deepnest tram->Basin->Kingdom's Edge into City of Tears), but it feels more intentional by the game (partly because of how much build up and payoff is included in it) rather than something cheeky you discovered by yourself without really being intended. The map as a whole is possibly more interconnected than HK, but also somewhat more linear in how it signals you where to go constantly compared to HK where zones were just laying there waiting for you to conquer them. And here is where my problem comes: adding the entire quest system with special wishboards, menus, big start/end messages to it makes the game feel EVEN MORE directed, like it's forcing your hand. The fact that it's so easy to trigger quests for areas you had just explored a second ago instead of starting the quest before going into the area adds a factor of tedium, especially since the drops required for quests can't happen if you haven't started it.And the main thing that bothers me is that they gated the true ending of the game behind all of these quests. In HK, the way to access the true ending was exploring the map and making connections (King's sigil opens the way to a "birthplace" making you have an a-ha moment about the door back in the Basin, with no input by the dev). Meanwhile in SS you just complete formal quests mandated by the game and the true ending spawns as a quest, it feels underwhelming as a result. It almost necessarily comes as you clean up the map, rather than simultaneously with discovery. I think this is the main thing SS failed to live up to compared to HK, while almost everything else in the game is superior.

As compared to HK where the true ending requirements all come with a perfect narrative explanation+moment baked in. In SS you're left wondering why the dude took so long to tell you about the trap, when narratively speaking he should've done so almost from first meeting.I think this is the main thing about the game that can truly be criticized with no caveats, ESPECIALLY in comparison to HK. It's the one thing that's clearly, objectively inferior. Other things people bring up like the charm system of the grub system don't really bother me that much, that's just a difference in the way the games work (fleas being useless until the endgame is a valid criticism, but a very minor one in my opinion). But the quest system, and especially its integration with the true ending, are just a mistake.

Just finished act 1 and Last Judge difficulty was greatly exaggerated. It took me around 7 tries to beat, but I could comfortably do it in 3 if I wasn't such an impatient ass, trying to sneak hits in all the time. The runback was also much shorter than I expected, for all the buzz around it, it barely took any time at all.Picrel took me around same amount of tries as Last Judge because I was also impatient and he often took 4 hp with one attack. Also funnily enough I think the runback was longer lolI'm having a lot of fun so far. There is one thing that's bothering me, exploring areas again with all abilities was more tiresome than it was in Hollow Knight for some reason.
