Where's the best place to start? What is the best version of the first game/trilogy? I think the HD versions are ugly as sin so shall I just play DS or 3DS versions?

Yes, the DS versions are the best. The first trilogy are also some of the few DS games where the japanese version also has english

DS if you want authenticity, most modern version of the trilogy release on everything if you're too stupid to emulate and want the least bad experience legally available
