Penelo was a spare healer that never took part in active battles. She'd cycle in to heal the rest while the normal casters rebuilt their MP for the next battle, then I brought them back in.

after playing to the imperial city somewhat recently i can say the game's protags are kinda split into different "era"s and meant to showcase concerns and feelings at different points of life.Vaan and Penelo are the current generation, kids who don't fully understand everything that's happening around them but feel a very specific sense of emotional drive to do thingsBalthier and Fran are the previous generation, a group that's only slightly older than the current but their priorities are clearly less society based and more personal based and an actualizing their emotions through actionBasch and Ashe are the old guard, the only group that's concerned with things like royal claim and the overarching effects of events that only they understand because they've been involved with it the longest compared to the other two groupsThus you have 3 generations kind of learning to understand each other's motivations and opinions and honestly it's all a very cohesive and well rounded look and approach to a complex kingdom and history that can resonate from many perspectives

A party of humans + Playboy bunny in a world with like 7 races (more if you count that dragongirl race from FFTA2) was a garbage idea, not keeping Reks alive and replacing him with Vaan was a garbage idea, Ashe being a walking MacGuffin who's unable to do anything productive during the story was a garbage idea, Judges being wasted on dumb shit was a garbage idea, I could go on. Vaan is just one of many poor designed elements of FFXII.

I read a fanfic where Basch and Balthier were in a love triangle with Ashe and then in one chapter, Ashe and Balthier were supposed to be guarding Larsa while Basch and Fran were looking for something and it turns out Ashe and Balthier were fucking while the enemies poisoned Larsa and he was in a coma because he was by himself and Basch almost killed Balthier until Fran stopped him and then the author stopped writing.
