I know that you're baiting, but I never pass on an opportunity to /pol/post on /v/. Every other country on Earth, including Japan, had tariffs on the United States, and it was bleeding us dry. Now that we're $37 trillion in debt, we don't have the luxury of just letting other countries rip us off free anymore. The tariffs were a necessary defense to exert pressure on other countries and force them to the bargaining table so that we can get them to deal more fairly with us again. Amiibo aren’t sold for being affortable, physical DLC anymore. They’re sold to be permanent shelf presence and appealing to collectors. Normalfags stopped buying them once smash started to dry up, leaving the market almost exclusively for hardcore tendies. They can charge whatever price they want with that pretext.

The fact that most amiibo don’t release alongside the games they’re attached to makes this pretty obvious. We got Xenoblade 3 and Tears of the Kingdom figures almost two years after their respective releases.

Me, I regularly pick them up and get them as gifts. Almost all the expensive ones have gotten reprints at this point except Box Boy, some Fire Emblem ones, and the Samus Returns Amiibos (Which I imagine will get one at some point), all the Smash ones keep getting reprints including the newer stuff, and unless you care about the card side of things it's fairly reasonable to collect them for MSRP brand new or less. At worst you pay like $20-25 for something nowadays. I'm still kicking myself over not picking up Box Boy Returns when it was $20 and no one was buying it.

What? It got obscenely easier because now tons of them shelfwarm (Basically every single Mario-related one, the Minecraft ones, Lucario, Falco, many Splatoon ones, and the BotW ones to name a few).
Gamestop gets a crazy amount of them nowadays with solid variety and pretty much every single one around me is still carrying the Monhun ones. Even the Loot Goblin took a solid year to sell out in my stores.
Target is now starting to stock more of them than they used to it's just not pre-Covid levels anymore.
Importing is also far more reliable because now Europe and Japan get reprints on top of the US making so many of the Smash ones essentially MSRP.

Admittedly I haven’t really kept up or bought one in years. I remember there was a point where if you didn’t show up early you probably wouldn’t get one and they instantly got scalped. That’s when I stopped bothering with them. It looks like things have changed since then. Maybe I’ll look for some of the rarer ones to see what I can find.

Im at least somewhat proud of the fact that ive never owned an amiibo, some of the early smash ones were at least somewhat appealing. I think i have like 3 things made by funko though, so not perfect in the plastic garbage department.

That's how it used to be early on and then during some of Covid. The past three or so years it's been fairly reasonable and normalized. Like I said there's still the odd Amiibo that does stay rare but overall they're doing quite well with reprinting most of the expensive ones and even ones that aren't expensive but didn't get as much time. Animal Crossing (Non-Smash) will always be the pariah though, that set killed TtL as a brand for most stores.

If you want to know the shelfwarmers currently it's Metroid Dread, Loftwing, all of Monhun, anyone from the Mario Series, and Smash MInecraft.

If you want to know the current rare ones:

The standalone ones from Echoes I think it was, not Smash. Smash have had reprints and are reasonably priced.

It was a JP-only pack-in that never got a reprint.

Gamestop exclusive and he was immediately knocked off so a huge chunk of the ones out in the wild are Chinese knockoffs and not the actual Amiibo. It's very hard to find a legitimate version of him because the knockoff looks so similar.

This hasn't been reprinted and while it shelfwarmed when it first released it started getting rarer as time went on and now it's like $80-100 compared to the $35 MSRP.
>Splatoon 1 alternate color set.
Only set that hasn't been reprinted from Splatoon. Japan got individual releases instead of a set but it's still fairly expensive to hunt down.

Gamestop exclusive. Shelfwarmed at release but now it's like $60 for a non-used one.

Samus herself is dirt cheap, you can easily get her alone for like $25 because Japan and I believe Europe had individual releases. The Metroid itself is what balloons the price to a starting used price of around $70. If you want the dual pack new it's typically $100+ while used it's about $80.
>Mega Man 11 Mega Man.
Pack-in with the game. I believe it had a standalone release in Japan but it floats around $70.

Nah, go look at the Street Fighter and TotK Amiibos like I mentioned earlier. They're shelfwarming hard and even with discounts almost immediately after they came out they're still having a hard time moving. I thought Metroid Dread would be scalped myself after SR and ordered it from Japan for like $20 extra and it turned out to be shelfwarm city.

This, it's literally companies using tariffs as an excuse to raise prices the way many used supply chain issues during the coof to raise them; more than those issues actually justified, on things that weren't necessarily supply constrained, and for long after the issues had cleared up. Most of the goods we buy are impacted by tarrifs in one way or another somewhere down the manufacturing chain, yet price increases across the economy have been overall incredibly small. All the really notable price hikes have been concentrated in a few specific markets, or even a few specific companies within those markets, and not in a way where them being the exception is really explained by just saying "muh tariffs", nor would it explain why aren't making adjustments to their business model that reduce the impact of those tariffs so that price hikes are minimized enough to avoid a reduction in sales.
