A good way to dodge things is to tap the boost jump button, as you're strafing you can basically just hop around, doesn't use much energy and you'll get it back when you let go of the hop, but you gotta press the boost again like right before you hit the ground so you avoid the landing animation

It's not that big of a deal. By the halfway point you'll have enough money to have fully upgraded to your final build regardless of how well you play. Optimal play just gets you there somewhat faster, or gives you more money to play around with parts without having to sell anything, but it doesn't matter that much. This is assuming you're reloading on mission failure though. You're just setting yourself up for debt hell if you're trying to ironman your very first playthrough.

Having two decent weapons and replacing your boosters/generator is like 90% of the upgrades you actually need and you can easily do that in the first quarter of the game regardless.

I found the weapon upgrades to be a massive trap, they use so much money in ammunition and the targeting radius is like 25% of the starting weapons which is a massive problem in a game where you can't aim worth a shit.

You're gonna take some, but you have to pair for every bullet, and therein lies the rub.

Laser weapons don't cost anything but are more expensive and a bigger drain on your generator. Learn when to use the laser sword and save before every mission in case it goes poorly.

Also protip, the spider legs can fire the back weapons without kneeling. Quad legs plus rear chain guns can take you far.

It's mostly just either buying the upgraded replacement of the starter rifle because it's great in many of the games, or going for a beam weapon. The actual starter gun is typically dogshit and generally high priority to swap out. Then it's just a good missile or cannon and you've got a solid set that can handle whatever.
It's fun to mess around with the weirder stuff but results will definitely vary.

Not all energy weapons have shit ammo, not all enemies are worth engaging, and yeah obviously there's no perfect one size fits all solution.

Pretty much the only exceptions are things like bug mazes where you're probably gonna have to swap parts out anyway.

Nope, not in AC1. First gen is super barebones when it comes to optional parts, most of the QoL stuff like ammo packs and energy extensions didn't show up until Project Phantasma or MoA. You're pretty much stuck with your generator output and whatever efficiencies your core setup gives you. Gotta learn energy discipline the hard way.

Basically feather the x button instead of holding it down while trying to dodge attacks. Eventually you'll get the rhythm down
