>Make two completely different games
>Call one Dawn of war 1 and name another Dawn of war 2
>Both are great games for their own reasons
>Because they share the same name any sequel has to choose to be one or the other
>Can't have both series continuing simultaneously

Are there any other examples of something like this?

But DoW3 was neither

No, unfortunately it doesn't, nor did it try to. It decided to be an esports MOBA. Team1 vs Team2 only. No FFA. No large multiplayer. Only 3 factions. Line units became creeps and battles were fought by heroes. Assault the Core is the only game mode. They didn't try to be a sequel to DoW1 or DoW2. It was specifically and only a MOBA with the franchise title.

Now, I say that as someone who actually liked the final patch of DoW3 and felt it only needed more factions and units to be "good." As a reminder, after the horrific and (justly) hated launch, DoW3 added
>standard Annhiliation game mode
>reinforce mechanic to line units
>significantly buffed line units compared to heroes so they actually play like an RTS
>fortifications like turrets
>flushed out hero roster with cool squads that fit the game rather than heroes (ie, termies, ironclad dreadnaughts, knight variants), nearly doubling the unit roster per faction
>added game option to remove Superweapons (or doctrines, or heroes, or... but only Superweapons needed to be removed to make the game fucking playable)
>some other things I've forgotten in the years since
To me, the last major mechanic it still needed was multi-team battles (3 teams, 4 teams, FFA), then a couple more line units per factions, and lastly just new factions in general. The framework of the game was in a great spot, finally ready to be a real RTS, and it was just lacking in content. And that's where they pulled the plug. Ready, good potential even, but lacking content and then put into the grave.

Damn shame. And because they didn't bother going the last step to salvage me as a customer, I will never buy another Relic game again. Even No Man's Scam deserves more money than Relic, since they at least put a decade of free patches into their scam product to salvage their public image and please their customers.
