I'm not sure if it's just that the genre doesn't have that many entries since that time period?
I'm not sure if it's just that they did the whole knights theme the whole game and then final boss was literally jousting matches and project aces has just never had an idea that good before or since then.

Ace Combat Cross Rumble + was fuckawesome.
AC 5 was also great.
