I've been playing the Yakuza games and I'm really enjoying them, but they truly are their own kind of fantasy world. Don't get me wrong — I like them — but the Yakuza culture is heavily romanticized. It's very different from a mafia story, where, even though things are also romanticized, there's usually an effort to show how harsh life can be — whether it's the toll it takes on friendships or the moral decay the protagonist goes through over time, eventually realizing that, despite what they believe, they’re actually a terrible person.Sometimes the Yakuza games try to explore the difference between “good” Yakuza and “bad” Yakuza, but it often ends up feeling like shonen anime logic. This makes me wonder: what would a Yakuza game look like if everything stayed the same — same world, same mechanics, etc. — but the story and characters were written with the same tone and intent as a serious mafia story, where characters are more realistic and gritty?I imagine, for starters, there would be a lot more guns. lol

>>720730992>I imagine, for starters, there would be a lot more guns. You would imagine wrong, stupid Amerimutt.Any sort of firearms are hard to get in Jap-land, period. The amount of dakka dakka in the games already border the believable maximum.
Just play Sleeping Dogs>B-b-b-but that's Triad, not Yakuza...!Same difference

>>720730992It seems like their new game Stranger than Heaven is going for that routeAlthough there seem to be a hint of supernatural element (protagonist doesn't age?), from the looks of the trailer depiction of crime seems to be more real and gritty than how they approach it in Yakuza
>>720731274Really? Color me surprised. So is it really in real life just a bunch of guys with swords and metal pipes?
>>720731779inb4 karaoke minigame with bakamitai
>>720731982>So is it really in real life just a bunch of guys with swords and metal pipes?Yes, and most of those "swords" are literally licensed weapons, with the coolest dudes literally having a legit license to own one. Also yes: bicycles have been one of the most popular street weapons for ya-kuzes IRL as well.
>>720731779This is what I hoping for. It would be a nice change of tone. Wouldn’t love the supernatural part though
>>720730992Lmao the biggest twist is you're never playing as a yakuza
>>720731985I don't know about that, Judgement didn't have it
>>720731757JE OP and ED are kino, while LJ is just stupid bitch shouting angry
>>720732261Radical
>>720730992watch "battles without honor and humanity"it was a reactionary movie made after seeing the glamorization of the yakuza to show them for the scum that they wereof course, you won't, because you're an AI
>>720732858Tanks for the recommendation. Will check it out. Also. “That’s literally Kiryu”
>>720733250Believe it or not, the OG Yakuza (2005) was literally a video-game tribute and parody of countless Jap-Mafia films from the previous decades. It wasn't until the later titles that it started having its own "lore" and identity to speak of.
>>720730992>I imagine, for starters, there would be a lot more guns. lolNah firearms are highly illegal in Japan and hard to get, so brawling and stabbing is actually accurate albeit ridiculously exaggerated.Obviously for the planned hit firearms were used, but in general low-level quarrel fist fights were common, especially when there weren't immediate consequences for starting it (i.e. one pissed off guy with a carry turning fist fight into a firefight).
>>720730992>>720731274its not hard to get a gun in Japan, but it is really restrictive and regulated as fuck.like even for hunting, you are only given a beginner hunter license and hunt pest birds for 10 years with a.22 before you are allowed to own a rifle, it has become a problem in Hokkaido because the large population of deer are becoming a problem, but there's too few licensed hunters that are allowed rifles that can kill deers.as for the yakuzas, the country is densely populated so its hard to own a gun and practice with it and not raise suspicion. thats why most of the assasination back then were mostly shanking. and if they decided to use guns, the gun they use is usually smuggled, bribed or stolen from police, or leftovers from WWII
>>720730992looks realistic enough 2 me
>>720730992>gunsare notoriously hard to get in Japan, unless you live in a remote mountain village and need one for hunting you will have almost no chance at getting one. The guy that shot Abe literally had to make one himself.
>>720732858Based taste. I personally preferred Cops VS Thugs by the same director (cast is basically the same too), I recommend it if you haven't watched it.Lame title that sounds like it's about good cops fighting bad yakuza, but that's not that case and it's actually a great exposé on relationship between police and Yakuza, and how questionable "cleansing" of police structure lead to Yakuza's downfall, for better or for worse.
