I dunno, all of those ripples, in the sand seem to give a sense of speed. The hills are landmarks. Plus all of those mines being littered about, and the rock formations in the no-so-far distance.

There's not inherently "wrong" with the screenshot. The texture is high res enough not to appear blurry. If the texture does tile, it's undetectable. Nothing is "bad" here. Though, it would help is Samus and her bike were casting a shadow. That's the one thing that makes it look odd. Lack of cast shadow on the figure standing at the focal point.
Also, I would make the shadows of the landscape darker for higher contrast. Purple shadows look cheap to me, since a lot of amateur artists are taught to do it when they're still new to digital art. they're taught to create a new layer, set it to multiply, and then paint a purple shade in the multiplayer layer to create shadows. Since everyone does this, it ends up being the over-used shading style that looks cheap.
they could remedy this by making the shadows higher contrast and less purple.

The thing that bothers me isn't the color composition or graphics, putting the camera way out like this just emphasizes how vastly empty this world is, hence the Fallout comparison since people will post the Dry Lake as an example of the "empty desert" in that game. They even zoom out on this shot and it reveals 0 new information which furthers the point.

What games have good looking deserts and canyons? I'm surprised there aren't more considering there's plenty of inspiration.

I've been to antelope canyon before, and theres no game so far that can make deserts as good looking as this.

Well you see, that's because you're within tall rock formations. Not amongst planes of sand. Those are two different things.
One of the planets in Outer Wilds has rock formations such as those. Though the color isn't as vibrant.
