anyone else think the later mario games are kind of soulless?i recently played through the series for the first time and while they are all great games everything after sunshine feels like a corporate product to consume rather than a video game to enjoy
sunshine is soullessgalaxy and 64 are the best
Everything before Galaxy and everything after Galaxy feels good to play. This includes 3D Land and 3D World. There is nothing fun about controlling a sluggish Mario who always moves at the same speed in levels having an identity crisis, unsure if they want to be linear obstacle courses or sandboxes, resulting in a shitty in-between. 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey give you the most freedom. 3D Land, 3D World, and Bowser's Fury have tighter obstacle course-based level design. The Galaxy games are all style, no substance.
>>720756606soul is a buzzword but the after 64 they became gimmick showcases, save for 3d world
>>720757071>after 64 they became gimmick showcases>after 64>the game with 3 transformation caps, 2 of which are mostly useless>the game where being actual 3D was the gimmick
>>720756606Mario has never been an "artistic" soulful game but it's always had really solid gameplay to make the games worth itbefore the 3d era mario was giga soul mogged by sonic
>>720757247powerups aren't a gimmick and you hardly use them in 64. fludd, planetoids, and cappy are gimmicks that drag the entire games down because everything is designed around them
The most soulful mario game, super mario land 2
>>720757650>powerups aren't a gimmicklol
>>720757650>powerups aren't a gimmickThey are the definition of a gimmick. The wing cap is a gimmick. The cape is a gimmick. Raccoon Mario is a gimmick.
I haven't enjoyed a Mario game since Galaxy 2, maybe 3D Land the first time I played it, but not repeat playthroughs. Don't know if it's nostalgia or a change in design, but I used to really enjoy fucking around in the 3D Marios. The first New Supers were also fun, but everything after Wii just doesn't feel organic. Even Odyssey felt really fucking empty, the only things of substance being the bosses and the stupid cap-jumping mechanics.
No. Odyssey is the most soulful game ever made.
>>720756606All these Galaxy threads got me in the mood to replay Galaxy again. I could emulate but fighting with Wii controls is always a bitch to setup.
>>720759402>Don't know if it's nostalgia or a change in designit's definitely nostalgia because if you go back to play 64 and sunshine you'll realize how empty the worlds actually aresunshine moreso
>>720756606super sami roll is basically good mario galaxy
>>720761205But the anon who just played them all for example feels similarly and he has no nostalgia or previous bias. Maybe there is something
>>720761205I didnt like galaxy when it came out and I was hyped as fuck for it. played sunshine right after which ironically I felt a little mixed about when first playing it but found it much more enjoyable. that was basically 2 decades ago though
>>720762462Yeah its called being a jaded faggot with symptoms of having giant cocks in their mouth. I played both galaxy and sunshine for the first time back in 2017 in my late 20's and they were really fun games.
>>720761205>if you go back to play 64 and sunshine you'll realize how empty the worlds actually are >sunshine moresoThe thing with those games was that the enjoyment I got came from finding cool ways to get to whatever destination I wanted to get to, meanwhile in Odyssey I always KNOW I'm gonna have to use some amount of hat stuff to get to those places. Even in Sunshine I never knew if I would need to glide with the jet pack to get somewhere of if a different nozzle or path would be better. Experimenting in those games was so much fun because there wasn't any sort of swiss army tool that was always optimal in every single occasion. Even outside Odyssey, you're mostly just gonna have to hope that triple jumps, long jumps, wall jumps or spinning will be enough, which might be why I wasn't as big of a fan of 64 and Galaxy compared to Sunshine.
