Punishing means you get punished more by mistakes.

For example steel mode. Dying deletes your save. Malenia or sans are not punishing. You start the battle right after. Bilewater is punishing, it forces backtracking. 2 hits are more punishing than 1. A game mode when even 1 hit deletes your save file is more punishing.

Crests are a noob trap and I am not kidding. The fact that so many of you are having trouble with very easy bosses and suggesting specific crests to deal with them is only further evidence. I used nothing but Hunter for the entire game and did not had any trouble with any particular boss or platforming segment. The only exception to this is Architect which is only busted due to sub-weapons being incredibly powerful and already boss-killers without it.

Speaking of Lone Fungus, there were one or two platforming sections where I pressed Y out of muscle memory trying to pogo and absolutely ate shit. I'd say overall it's at a good level once you get used to the diagonal pogo and needing to hit with the needle, and I like the variety of challenges in some of the later gauntlets especially. My only gripe is that the harpoon taking silk means you can basically never heal during a gauntlet and often have to do awkward stuttersteps to buy time.

Once I figured out how to use the clawline properly for platforming, most of the challenges were pretty trivial. I think it would have been cool if there was a boss you encounter in a pit and you're constantly falling down and have to pogo off it but also its shooting tentacles or lasers at you so you have to use your grappling hook to dodge them and then when you defeat it and get to the bottom it has a second phase

I think it would have been really interesting had Hollow Knight been like that.
And people in these threads shit on act 3 a lot. But I genuinely really do think act 3 is really cool. And it could be "fixed" (if you insist on a "fix" even being necessary) very, very easily. If the Elegy of the Deep just worked on more things and it had a little more content, then Act 3 would quickly turn from just cool to a genuine highlight.

Fuck if you just double the amount of stuff the song works on, then Act 3 would quickly up an Act 3 where you find the 'secret' high difficulty challenges and or additional hidden memory regions. And that would be really cool. It's already kind of cool. People already praise how much they like the Karmelita boss fight or how striking the Coral Tower whatever is. It has very memorable and engaging moments. It just runs out of significant content pretty quickly since it just has 3(+1) places that the song even works on.
And while the Void Infested world map might not be the most exciting thing ever to re-explore the entire world again if you already did so thoroughly in Act 2 and Act 1. But having the remixed world map as you move between the actually significant Act 3 objectives, is really cool. At least cooler if the world hadn't been remixed at all.
Act 3 is already rather cool as is. And it has all the building blocks for even further greatness.


People really shit on Act 3 too much.
Even if the game never received any further content updates I'll still hold on to the claim that Act 3 is cool as is. Combing through the world in detail again might just not be super satisfying (but you don't technically even need to do it). But if any of the future DLC just adds some more content to Act 3, I really do think it could not only stand on its own easily, but be the game's highlight.
And yet people talk about the act as if there is something fundamentally wrong with it. It's just a tad content light.

The issue comes in the fact that these moments had more areas to them than just the boss fights, we saw there were more areas to them. Even if they stayed as ghost memories, the fact that only the optional Green prince section has an actual fully-fledged area, while everyone else gets one tiny place with arenas gating the boss, and that they all have their own dedicated fauna to kill, tells more to me that they had bigger plans but chose to cut things for one reason or another. Maybe the couple of playtesters they had said that Act 3 was already too big and they chose to reduce its size, because I doubt that they'd cut an entire Ant colony area for no reason after Ari said that he had to restrain himself from drawing more concepts because "all of this HAD to be put in the game"

You know what a lot of the bosses in act 3 like Seth feel like? Like Team Cherry watched the youtube showcases for modded Hollow Knight bosses. Like pic related. The cancer-designed variations of existing bosses that had their attack patterns and behavior deliberately tuned to be obnoxious and super fast and full of cheap "gotchas" for the player.

Too many Silksong bosses feel like they were designed the same way as pic related. I'm at the point where I'm just tired of this shit and just spamming poison cogflies at the bosses waiting for them to die so I can get them out of the way and see more of the game.

I think Team Cherry originally conceived Silksong to have this coral area, have a major ant boss, and Verdania. But throughout development they probably felt, during the Citadel's development most likely, that these areas should have been decimated.

The enemies retreat from you because you're incredibly super fast.
Sprint. I hope you're using the sprint function constantly, in and out of combat. And if you combine it with air dashes you'll be even faster. And you can combine the options to be even faster.
And later when you get the double jump you can chase for even longer for even faster.
And when likewise with the clawline, which is the perfect tool to close the gap if your regular chase did not cut it close enough for some reason.
And while not necessary, the silkspeed charm will make you a real, genuine speed demon in the game.

the problem with tools is that they're balanced around being resource-limited. they have to feel strong because you're spending a resource to use them, but then because they're strong they feel very cheap to use since they don't really augment your moveset, they just replace it and allow you to skip bosses.
if tools were just nerfed across the board and then made free to recraft at benches, the game would be significantly more fun.

They unironically didn't tune up the bosses enough. You can fight First Sinner as early as Act 2 and it's kind of the ceiling of Silksong's difficulty.
The Elegy fights. Lost Lace. Everything after First Sinner is around First Sinner tier. The difficulty progression plateaus here.

The fights are still really cool. Really engaging. Fun in their own ways. But they stop becoming more difficult. And it's not as if First Sinner is -that- challenging of a boss.

I don't know if it's the controller, something mechanically with wall jumps or something else, but I have this terrible ability to double jump off of walls, which has fucked me over so many times (raged bad at second lava escape). As someone who hasn't bothered with path of pain, I'd consider at least 90% of the platforming in silksong perfectly doable by most people. The main troubles I had were with timed platforms like in karak and verdaina, as well as the cradle ascent to mister mushroom (it just kept going, and going, and going...). There was also a couple of pretty tight spike sections that required rather specific positioning and use of floating, but that's easy to figure out, just need to get consistent.

Hollow Knight is so much easier lol I don't think you people remember that game at all. The bosses are like slow motion in Hollow Knight compared to Silksong. The attempt where I actually beat Graol I went into the fight worm'd and with 2 masks lmao. I replayed the game during the two weeks between Silksong's release date announcement and the actual release date.
I still get fucking skill filtered at 110%. And yet I was able to just stumble my way through all of Silksong to 100% without even learning most of the bosses.
Dream Soul Master or Lost Kin or whatever are easily more difficult than any Silksong bosses. And that is not even touching the Grimm or Godhome fights. Even something like the Collosseum of Fools forces you to redo the entire gauntlet if you die to the God Tamer, but the Coral Tower in Silksong gives you a checkpoint before the Crust King. And once again, the Crust King is pathetically easy and simple even compared to the God Tamer.

You are so, so much faster in Silksong. And your ability to just escape to safety to heal without being hit, all but regardless of where in the pattern the enemies in question are. Makes mistakes way, way more forgiving in Silksong than in Hollow Knight. In Hollow Knight you really need to identify very specific holes in the enemy pattern to have time to heal at all, even with the charm that boosts the speed of your healing. Which is why you actually need to learn the bosses to be able to heal at all. But in Silksong you can just flee and you're very likely to succeed because you're super fucking fast and can even heal in the air.

Lace 1 is insanely fucking pathetically simple. Lace 1 is like Broken Vessel tier or something. If not more straight forward because you can just heal whenever the fuck you want.

I think this is what the people defending the bilewater bench are missing. Another part of this is the fact that the Wreath of Purity doesn't actually protect you against bile, it just delays it for a second and it can break. Which also communicates to the player that even with the charm you should NOT go into the bile unless you mean to immediately hop out of it .

Environmental damage absolutely is an issue. The punishment for platforming is having to redo a section. Having double damage on everything just feels unnecessarily punishing and it gets obnoxious whenever you just trip into something while backtracking
