Is getting filtered by difficulty in a metroidvania normal, or did Silksong invent it?

In old cartridge ROM and arcade cabinets, the difficulty was needed to increase playtime in short games. It was justifiable. For me, Ori and the blind forest is an example of good difficulty in modern action platformer. HK 2017 is based heaviliy on Ori, btw.
