Keep in mind that the switch 1 had a very similar launch strategy of 2 big games around the middle of launch year (splatoon 2/odyssey compared to mario kart/bananza), then going on a hiatus for the rest of the year and much of the next. However, after at the end of 2018 they did a heavy hitter, smash ultimate, beginning an onslaught of games that lasted for the next few years
So yes, while that direct on friday did suck, it's normal, the switch 2 is in a resting phase, they're waiting until everyone has their switch 2 to actually make the good games for it.
