FUCK early access.
This never should've been a thing.
>>
Only early access games I paid for were back in 2010 and even those I regret Other than Minecraft just because it's neat to say I beta tested one of the biggest games ever

The moment Steam turned it into a thing was when I finally uncategorically realized that I was being played as a fool. Never ever paid money for an EA game ever since. And if I ever pirated an EA game, it must have been a couple of times at most.
>>
EA as a concept is fine, allowing permanent EA with no recourse is not.

Has an early access game ever been finished? All of the ones I've seen sold a bunch of copies at first and then the devs stopped working on it.

I've been waiting for Exanima to be finished for like, 9 years.
They pinky promise they're almost there.

the four horsemen

Early Access was only based when Valve let you refund the game no matter how many hours you had played as long as it was pre-release date.

I bought Minecraft in Alpha because I saw a thread with Notch posting and I wanted to support a game that listened to /v/

bg3
subnautica
darkest dungeon
abiotic factor
rimworld
etc.

I give that guy a pass cuz he is trying to do something truly unprecedented as a solo autist and his game has enough content already to justify a 30$ price tag even if he never finishes it.
>>

Yeah, even unfinished I spent like 150 hours on it. And I'm sure that if a new update came around I'd try to check it out.
>>

There was a mascot horror dbd clone that released in early access and it was the most fun I'd had in years. Then the devs removed half the content in the last update and haven't touched it since October 2023, you can actually go on and watch the code decay in real time. God I wish there were actual repercussions for basically stealing people's money.

I'd rather be able to play more unfinished but good games than have no games to play at all. How are indie devs ever supposed to get games out if they can't sell the concept of their game?

Rimworld was early access.
Wreckfest was early access.
Derail Valley is practically done (B99.7 lmao) but still in early access because the devs want to polish more.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer is early access and actually finished, but devs are waiting to release 1.0 on the 25th for TGS.

It's not all broken promises.

Ale Abbey did it, coming out in 2 days. Cute little brewing tycoon game.

You can kinda tell when an indie will be able to finish their games by the updates they make.
>>
>>720781238
most of the previously EA games in my library have done a full release. those that are still in EA are still being actively developed and I get to play new content for them without paying extra money, so I'm fine with that.
>>720781492
I bought it because it was popular, my friends were playing it, and it was like $10 so I figured why the heck not.
>>
>>720777308
Plenty of games existed that released incomplete and got updates over time. Early Access just gave a name and tag to them.
There should be a more noticable tag once a game goes a year+ without an update.

like a big skull symbol next to a "dead game" tag

Honestly, the real issue is that indies now think they deserve to be paid when they were making excellent, soulful games just fine back before this shit was normalized. Worse is that we're now seeing creators who made cool free games back then waking up and deciding they want retroactive payment for their work and release soulless, paid remakes of their games that were perfectly fine as free games.
