Yes I am nearly two decades late and not sure what else could be said about it on ‘discussion’ (forums but I beat it today and wanted to talk about it. I’m going through games on ps3 I haven’t had the chance to play as a teen and this was one of them.
I thoroughly enjoyed it but it’s not something I would ever play again. I’m not going to rehash complaints about cutscene length and excessive info-dumping codec calls but my controller kept turning off mid-cutscene so I missed a few flashbacks.
‘Fan Service: The Game’ but I still enjoyed it. I was getting filtered by Ocelot’s third phase in the fistfight until I was told you can just MGS 3 CQC him and I beat it immediately.
Most of the B&B bosses sucked, except for Octopus and Mantis. I liked the Vamp fight, and Acts 1 & 2 were kino. Act 3 sucked, I remember almost nothing about Act 4 because it was pretty boring with bad enemies. I did enjoy sneaking onto Haven and the microwave corridor was neat only cause of the multiple-perspectives being shown.
Is MGS 3 really just the best game in the series by default? I wish the series had more levels focused on infiltrating compounds, but I guess this is the wrong series to look for in regards to that. Sneaking through war torn battlefields was neat, there just wasn’t enough of it.
The ending basically leaves you like Peter Griffin crying and clapping over the ending of a romcom he saw in theaters.
I dunno. I guess the Good overshadows the Bad, so I will say I liked it.
MGS 1 is still the worst in the series. Yes I liked V.

I hate this garbage game in a way that cannot be adequately explained and I think you're being too kind on it by virtue of going in knowing that it was gonna be a flaw, rather than me going into it having played the first 3 MGS and expecting something that is anywhere near that level.

The fanservice is pathetic and brainless. The gameplay disappears after Act 2.

And yes, MGS 3 is the best game.

The ending is infuriating and I can't believe you liked it.

>The Ending
Seeing Big Boss after coming off a fresh MGS 3 playthrough was hype but that was the only good thing about it. I didn’t like anything else besides that regarding the ending. The “reconstructed with parts from Liquid and Solidus” bit was retarded but I’m a sucker for the salute callback BB did over the grave of The Boss.
The Peter Griffin clapping reference was as accurate as I could get. The ending is stupid but fan service will have you looking like gif related

The thing is I think MGS is a series that has great examples of fanservice. Well, in MGS 2 it's subversive, but in MGS 3 it's pretty much just fanservice played straight. And it's actually brilliant.

When it's fanservice like MGS 4 (Or MGS V, but I'm way less harsh on that game because it's long past the series going to shit and at least that is mainly a game and not really a movie), it's infuriating. I didn't clap to it. I was furious back then and I'm still furious now. It felt like I was playing fanfiction.

The final boss is the greatest piece of writing of the 21st century, it does so many things at once simultaneously that I dont know how kojima did it
>its about snake and liquid getting to go out swinging and reclaiming their identity as a warriors one last time before their bodies fully collapse
>its about ocelot slowly reclaiming his body and saying goodbye to the man he loved through his son/clone
>its about celebrating the entire franchise and show the evolution of the games through the years for fanservice
>its about the decay of the franchise and all sequels in general, going through the series in release order as snake and ocelot get more fucked up until by the time it reaches mgs4 there's no longer a choreography and its just 2 decrepit old mean swinging wildly at eachother and embarrassingly getting back up

The video is about as long as a cutscene from the game but it's worth watching.

I am not watching a 3 hour video pretending MGS 4 isn't dogshit. No chance.

I also happened to beat this game for the first time today and hoped there was a Metal Gear thread I could look at (but I haven't played V or PW)
I didn't even know it had a bad reputation. I was almost completely blind. My friend said that it was generally people's least favorite, but I didn't know it was that disliked until I was looking at things afterwards.
In all honesty, I do like it less than the first three games, but it's still a damn good game in the grand scheme of things. It could've been a bit more subtle, but I still enjoyed my time with it. It felt like shit to see Solid Snake in such a sorry state, but I'd been thinking about how few games there are about the passage of time and what we lose as it goes on, and it kind of scratched that itch for me, if only a bit.

I had seen the cutscenes, but I didn't know jackshit about the actual fight. As I've been binging the series over the past couple of weeks, my favorite boss fight was always fighting Liquid on top of REX, so it really fucking got me. It's shocking how consistently excellent the final bosses are in this series.

why do you hate 1? that's a wild way to end the post

You are a deeply homosexual man, mgs1 is the best in the series
>>
>>720785381
Im a zoomer (27) so I am genuinely filtered by the gameplay. Did I beat it through and through? Yes. But I enjoy it for the story. I dont HATE 1, I just think its the worst in the series when it comes to playing it. I guess I had to be there when it released

>>720783321
I entered it relatively blind too, only knowing about the long cutscenes and certain spoilers due to just knowing the series and MGS 4 memes, but I didnt know what to expect as well. I didnt mind that nanomachines were the explanation for pretty much everything. It kinda makes sense, thats how it always was for the series
>>
>>720785723
Im an actual zoomer (21) and first played these games 2 years ago, and mgs1 still plays perfectly today, the shooting is kind of shit but the whole point of the game is sneaking around so you dont shoot people, also the atmosphere and ost is the best in the series. Shadow moses is an extremely small map made up of 32×32 textures and triangles and yet is one of the most memorable gaming locations off the ambience alone. That first time you enter the hangar and see Rex for the first time was magical and I played this shit 25 years late
>>
i was a teenager when mgs4 came out and i thought it was the best shit ever back then, so i'll always have a soft spot for it even if i realize how bad it is now
meanwhile i hated PW when it came out and now i still do, fuck that piece of shit
>>
>>720785723
I mean I'm around the same age but I think 1 is the most complete and rounded off experience of the bunch along with 3. 2 has weird sections where it feels incomplete and 4 is 4 and they definitely belong lower than 1 and 3.
>>
>>720785723
MGS1 played completely fine. Obviously a bit clunkier than anything today, but still amazing. It's completely unmatched atmosphere-wise as well.

>Is MGS 3 really just the best game in the series by default?
I think various MGS games excel at different things, but I yea MGS3 is up there
My humble opinion:
>MGS1
Best boss fights (MGS3 comes close)
>MGS2
Best themes and message
>MGS3
Best cast of characters
>MGS4
Best climax (arguably the series' climax)
>MGS PW
Look, PW is my favorite but going by these metrics I struggle to think of what it does best than all the others. I guess I liked how goofy some tapes where
>MGSV
Best gameplay
>>
I like the MGS series but I feel like Kojima is kind of a pseudo intellectual who is completely incapable of expressing his themes and ideas in any kind of interesting way and so much of it feels like surface level repetition of references amongst other things.
>>
>>720779616
Unfortunately, you didn't get to experience the true kino of MGS4, MGO2
>>
>>720788180
the only reason people/studios put up with his retarded story ideas is that he is actually a competent game developer who delivers technically well-made games (see all the details and TECHNOLOGY moments in MGS & Death Stranding). a constant in behind the scenes documentaries of the MGS games is that his fellow developers are always weirded out by his retarded ideas but only pushback if they are really bad like him wanting The End fight to last weeks
>>
>>720788605
>The End fight to last weeks
Shit like that was never really going to happen. Even Kojima was never really going to do anything like that. On any level it wouldn't have been done. I feel like that's one of those bullshit stories that ends up becoming almost like a myth itself. Some pre pre pre production he joked about shit.
>Death Stranding
I enjoyed 1 and 2 but for all the technology, the gameplay and loops are rather basic and the story and ideas have all the same trappings and issues of MGS. It is just a mess, charming mess but still a mess all the same.

MGS V has some of the best gameplay and TECHNOLOGY of anything but a lifeless open world and poor decisions (aswell as feeling like a half finished game) diminish all that. I just find it weird when people think of Kojima as auteur status when his games just might ultimately be a veneer of kooky pseudo intellectualism and the technology moments, little designs here and there. Maybe it just speaks for the sad state of gaming that this veneer is so highly thought of.
