I feel like people have overly high expectations these days. People will shit on games even if they're good, and they'll still find something to complain about even if they're almost perfect. On the other hand people will praise mediocre or even bad games because everyone else likes it. I miss days when people had their own opinions and even enjoyed bad games instead of being a fucking hive mind.
Half of the PS3 library was just shovelware trash but people still fondly remember crap like Uncharted 1 or Resistance which were objectively terrible games

I am less mindful of flaws in experiences I consider novel.
I am much more ready to discard games and not even try them, let alone be negative on them, if they are the same kind of shit I'm already used to playing. Soulslikes, Metroidvanias, Roguelikes and especially open world games, get a very short leash with me.

lol
lmao even
Herd mentality has existed since the stone age. This is nothing new. The only difference is because literally everyone has access to the internet now so it's all thrown in your face.

Back in the day there were gaming magazines but that didn't stop people from having their own opinions. Half of the cult classics from the 90s and 2000s would have simply failed if they had been released today.

This holds true for every console. The NES and SNES libraries are filled with so much inane braindead movieshit in particular it's amazing. I can't take anyone praising DQ or FF games seriously

every game today is competing against every game that came before. a novel game has some appeal, for all its rough edges. a polished derivative game struggles to stand out.

yeap sounds about right

I didn't mean to say that there used to be a lot of shovelware (which is also true), I meant that many old games that are considered good and loved by people are just trash and shovelware. Returning to my example from the OP I absolutely don't understand how Uncharted got so many sequels considering that the first game is just a terrible clone of Lara Croft
