in my mind a mage should have a billion different spells, but that's not really possible

Each slot is a rune, and you can select combos of runes to cast different spells. So one fire rune is a fireball but two or three is a fire wave. There's a shield spell that can become a reflect spell if stacked, and if you chain that with an element rune it will only reflect that element, but it will reflect 100% of the damage back at the enemy.
