IDK it's like JRPGs in particular fall into this category. The turn based combat and loot progression are so straightforward it just feels like something you flow through without thinking too much about it. A game like Morrowind could be considered, "like a VN", but the RPG mechanics, guilds, player choices, non-linear exploration, unique spell systems, etc, really make the experience different from a VN. (not a morrowind glaze, just an example)
