>character A has blond hair and blue clothes
>character B has blond hair and blue clothes too
should i change up the designs of a character in a game for the sake of preventing repetition?

If their haircuts and outfits are different that should be good enough. But yeah, that's kinda sloppy design choice
>>

i just thought those palettes are cool and suits(pun not intended) the characters
>>
No, I've found that similar looking girls is hotter. Just give them slight differences. Anime gives each girl a different hairstyle because brainlets can't tell the difference otherwise.

True, if you're leaning into a certain aesthetic or archetype, slight tweaks in silhouette or personality go a long way. Look at basically every visual novel ever-half the cast wears the same school uniform and still feels distinct. Just don’t go full Fire Emblem Awakening where everyone looks like Lucina with a different wig.

If shorter one is pricky and cocky and the talker one is 7 IQ you should be good

tailor the designs to their personalities. I should be able to tell what kind of girls they are just by looking at them despite the same hair color and uniforms
>>
Just up the similarity for humor or as an actual plot point, like finding out they are sisters.
>>

But they are not sisters
>>

They just don't know yet.
On a more serious note, people can just look similar but there are more distinctive features you can use other than hair, such as more roundl/sharp facial traits, different eye shapes, typical expressions, or just one accessory

is something like the OP pic a good difference?
>height difference
>face difference
>eye difference
>expression difference
>>

The right one has a looooong head but there are enough obvious differences even without that.
>>
Another thing you can do is have the background characters have more brown hair.

Give one of them bigger breasts. People will notice.

how many characters can i give the same hair colour before people start thinking its kinda weird? My headcanon for like 60% of the characters have a blond hair colour and the last thing i want people to see my game as is some gay nazi aryan fetish shit

In something I wrote I have 4 blonde girls and 3 of them have blue eyes too. Only two of them are actually relevant though, the other half is cute side characters. There are also obviously way more long-haired girls.

Cute. And yeah those have very noticable differences.

Take cues from manga. If they don't use crazy hair colors, most characters end up black haired and even with the sameface shit going on, you can still tell them apart because they have different hair length, hair style, hair accessories, eye shape, brow shape, smile/scowl, messy/tidy clothes, confident/awkward body posture, minimal movement vs getting all over the place, different skirt and sock lengths, inturned/outturned feet, etc. Those external characteristics may telegraph the character's personality, or quite the contrary - conceal her true nature.
