To add-on to the bad naming, the Wii brand had already grown stale by 2011, and by that point a lot of the appeal of the gimmicks and shovelware games had been supplanted by smartphones and tablets. The Wii-U was too gimmicky and too far behind the competition at the time to have appeal.
There's also the fact that people were getting tired of handheld console, making you stay on the tv all day and you can't even move itThere's a reason why the ds series and switch series was more successful

Wii U was just uncool, it was the kid console and the kids who grew up with the Wii now wanted mature consoles. It was before Nintendo properties had that Nintendo nostalgia glasses to love whatever they do.That's not the only reason but a big one, add the fact that it looked like just another peripheral to the old looking Wii, and that those who knew itw as different saw it as something that was more expensive but only as powerful as their PS3/360 they've had for years and is cheaper. It was DOA despite having great software.
