Why is ray tracing and path tracing so divisive in grafixx discussions? Is it sour grapes?

Nobody would be mad at RT/PT if it did not come at the expense of everything else. I mean, sure, if what used to be functional is still functional, then let people with more money than sense have their fun gimick. But that's not the case. Developers these days just flat out refuse to put any meaningful lighting or shaderwork in their games. RT will do it anyway. So it's either RT or back to PS1 graphics. People aren't mad at ray tracing per say, but at incompetent, greedy developers who use it as an excuse to skip a fundamental process of any 3d game's design and save the costs of it by shifting it to the players instead through stupendeously inflated hardware requirements.
