It’s a funny story. So they’re doing a bunch of Marvel crossovers, starting with a Spider-Man set. Problem is, Marvel Snap exists. Disney has no problem allowing Spidey in paper Magic, but if he shows up in Arena they’ll be competing against themselves. So Wizards had to make an entire set of mechanically identical OCDONOTSTEALs for Arena.
>>
>>720914895
The real issue is "nontoken". Not being able to use Clues or Food sucks and doesn't let you truly shit out artifacts

Summary:
>Young male players reportedly did not like the sunny magical creatures that bake pies and sweep floors in Lorwyn (which is why they made Eldraine, which had more conventional fantasy flavor)
>Lorwyn cards had many abilities which led to complicated board states where the player was not sure what to do, this turned off many players
>Morningtide made things worse by adding another layer of tribal over Lorwyn tribal.
>Shadowmoor focused very heavily on hybrid cards, which made it difficult for players to determine what colors they were drafting in limited
>Eventide mechanics didn't work with Shadowmoor mechanics

Is there any hope for a new vidya cardgame? Obviously can't expect anything from the big jews, but I do not care for that, I just want a little contained puzzle-adventure. Really liked Inscryption's act 2 the most (mechanics-wise), but there are too many caveats around the game as a whole. Some RPG where you collect the cards to show who's the wizard with the biggest deck in the realm.
Singleplayer-focused cardgame simulator sounds like a pipe dream, but staple an endless mode on top, and suddenly you got a unique selling point for all rogueli*e deckbuilder fags.

Paper magic players are the most confusing demographic to me of any gaming medium. I bought dune imperium, the digital version on sale for 6 bucks, and the game comes with all the cards and has endless amounts of replayablity. I feel like this is a fair trade, and more importantly I want to play the fucking game; with a balanced competitive experience between me and my opponents.
Mtg players feel a compulsion to shill for each set, when there's dozens of free online and offline singleplayer/multiplayer iterations of the game, not even considering the fact that you can print 1000 proxies online for a few bucks.
Why do mtg players love bending over backwards so much and just opening their wallets for a game that
Is so below average compared to other tabletop games? Compare the money they have spent on the last 4 sets to the 5 dollars I spent on gloomhaven digital, not only is it a better game with more depth, I've gotten like 250 hours out of it without mods which are free.

NTA but I feel X-Men or Avengers has more breadth and thus more material for draft chaff and a wider setting that isn't confined to real life New York, so they wouldn't have to make cards like "pigeon" or "subway train" and "hot dog stand".
>>
>>720924154
Also, because the X-Men are an ensemble cast and not necessarily focused on one dude, they wouldn't have to personally paste Spiderman into 10 separate dogshit commons just because people weren't drafting Spiderman enough. Magic just isn't equipped for a "protagonist" as Jace demonstrated before

Pretty damn bad. If you are very good at draft it can pay for itself but obviously plenty of sharks will also be trying for this.
The most efficient thing to do is play drafts that turn gold into gems, then save up gems for the battle pass, which gives many packs and also enough gems that repeating the process on the next battle pass is a little quicker.
>>
>>720924407
The problem I feel isn't necessarily the modern setting. Neon Kamigawa, Edge of Eternities Duskmourn and Streets of New Capenna worked with a modern/sci-fi setting. The problem is having a distinct world to explore.

Magic is really good at presenting you with a world. If I open a Lost Caverns of Ixalan pack I just immediately know the base of the setting without needing to read a lore article or book- I know that there's caves and catacombs, that vampires, aztecs and pirates are fighting over them while exploring them, and that a bunch of fungi and lions live there and are fighting the invaders, because the commons and uncommons detail these scenarios.

But there's not really a distinct and unique setting with these Marvel sets because the setting is the modern world woth a bunch of weirdos all orbiting around Spiderman, so there's no real space for worldbuilding. Every character is making a quip or referencing a quote from their original material. Everything is a huge branding exercise.

They literally carried MTG after how badly WotC threw Bolas under the bus to have their own dollar tree version of Avengers Endgame to coincide with the fucking capeshit movie release.
I am still fucking mad about this.

By the time the Praetors and Phyrexia were done dirty I felt nothing.
Elsh Norn would had never had fisticuffs with a fucking planeswalker, the fact they follow this with genderwalkers and even gayer Jacestice League just cements how they do not give a fuck about the lore anymore.
Remember when the Weatherlight crew and Urza had to throw everything at Yagmoth including the kitchen sink and the fucking moon and that barely got him dizzy? Then Gerrard had to ram the Weatherlight and the Legacy weapon up Yagmoth's ass to finally put the bozo down? Wasn't that awesome? That was MTG.

Now it is spider-man and gay men in hot tubs.
Sucks.

feel free to blame tolkien, but the flavor of fantasy, and the fantasy game called MAGIC, just doesn't work when transplanted to cyberpunk or space or speakeasy
certain presentation is necessary, it's what makes mirrodin "the artifact plane" and not "the robot plane"
it's a broader problem with hat sets that borrow too much """inspiration""" and just become shitty expy settings, which means that it's not really magic that presents the world, but player's own foreknowledge of norse myths or horror flicks or whatnot (ixalan is a more positive outlier with its mishmash of aztecs and vampires)

Rumor goes that Spoderman wasn't meant to be standard, but a set like AC or even just commander precons dumped in between actual sets. You can see that in some cards that mention more than one opponent.
But Marvel and Hasbro business partnership had a different idea of how their poster boy should be treated.

Do commanderfags actually like official rulings like with partner or planeswalker commanders? Wasn't the big ban and subsequent takeover by WOTC a massive fiasco?

Then Gerrard had to ram the Weatherlight and the Legacy weapon up Yagmoth's ass to finally put the bozo down? Wasn't that awesome? That was MTG.
It wasn't awesome, no, because I remember that it was all pulled out of their ass and made literally everything beforehand make zero sense. If Urza had the laser beam that killed Yawgmoth all along then literally everything up until now was for fucking nothing and he just looks like a retard. In fact Invasion made Urza look like a nonsensical retard and sucked shit. His plan made no sense and he killed like 4 planeswalkers for no gain whatsoever. Svat loses 70 IQ points and betrays everyone for ????? then dies, and Urza apparently wanted this to happen because uhhhh soul bombs (because he couldn't just use the soul bombs outright because ???).

All the "the Weatherlight team has to grow for itself" was for nothing. Hanna died for no reason because Urza had no reason not to help them. Barrin died for no reason. Urza goes and betrays everyone throwing literally everything he ever worked for in the garbage.
>>
>>720928229

That IS in line with Urza's overall behavior.
The man was a legendary fuckup to the last.
The only reason he was ever opposed to Yawgmoth was because of the influence Phyrexia had on Mishra's life and death. If not for it, he would've probably joined Phyrexia as soon as he laid eyes on it.. Like his brother did.

No, Urza hates Yawgmoth because Yawgmoth has continously fucked with his life and with Dominaria. He was horrified when he first learns Mishra turned himself into a machine- his obsession starts with revenge and it only grows as Phyrexia attacks Dominaria, causes him to lose his friend of literally thousands of years Xantcha, destroys Tolaria, destroys Serra's Realm and so on. This is what makes Urza do the shit he does, this obsession is born of Phyrexia needing to be destroyed but him going way way way too far.

Urza's problem isn't merely that he's retarded, is that he hyperfocuses on something and fuck literally everything else. For him that was destroying Phyrexia. Every fuckup he's had was downstream of his unending obsession with annihilating Phyrexia, for which literally everything was justified. Invasion just makes him completely schizophrenic and doing shit for no reason or gain at all, like letting Szat in the team despite knowing he'd betray them to justify him being made into a bomb, when he could have just made him into a bomb and nobody would have ever mourned the psychopath mass murderer. Instead he loses 4 PWs on this shit. Invasion sucked ass and the plot was retarded.

>>
>>720931209
No, and it wont. That's the entire point of this thread
>>
>>720931123
>He was horrified when he first learns Mishra turned himself into a machine
Because it was his brother that died for it, his rival, his blood, his obsession. Had he witnessed Phyrexia for his own eyes, without the mayhem of the Brothers' War coloring their interaction, he would've seen it as a thing of beauty just as Mishra did.
Urza loves artifice. Urza loves the Phyrexian ideal of flesh turned metal. The suffering of Xantcha, the destruction of Serra's Realm, these are just casualties in a war, not actually related to Urza's ideals. Urza truly has no ideals beyond artifice. That's why he ultimately gave up to the song of Yawgmoth's sway. He just had to be reminded that his hate should be greater than his love, by Gerrard beheading him.

>>
>>720933118
>but this different set for digital shit has to be one of the worst moves WotC has made in a very long time
They didn't have a choice. Marvel has full rights for digital card games for their IPs with Snap.
Do you honestly think wotc would have made alternate art and names for 188 cards if Marvel didn't force them to?
>>
>>720933320
They should have tried harder or backed out completely, or at the very least relegated the collab to a Secret Lair/Commander precon or something when Marvel refused to make the cards in digital.
Making a standard legal set have 2 different printings based on your platform is fucking retarded and no excuse will nullify that
>>
Control really sucks to play these days...
>>
>>720933564
>They should have tried harder or backed out completely
Anon, this is Hasbro we're talking about. They have a huge business agreement with Marvel for toys and all kinds of shit. They couldn't give two shits about what WoTC tells them is a good idea or not.
The crossover was going to happen one way or another, and if Marvel says no digital version, then there's no digital version. End of the story.
>>
>>720933320
Marvel giving out rights for different forms of media is a tale as old as time, whether it's selling Spiderman film rights to Sony so they had to shit out a bad Spiderman every couple of years, or the X-Men film rights so they tried to replace the X-Men everywhere so they could have synergy once their own films popped off
It wouldn't surprise me if they signed the full digital card game rights away to the Marvel Snap devs and the Marvel suits themselves had no say in the matter

Cool creepy designs, specially Elesh since I enjoyed their approach of evil White.
>>
>>720935631
Despite appearing identical, they are 2 separate ideas conveyed, strangely, in the same way.
Ability words are words or phrases that unify a set of abilities under a banner based on what they do or what triggers them. Landfall isn't mechanically distinct, but tells you "this cares about when a land you control ETBs".
Flavor words/phrases are terms that are used to describe the flavor of an ability. They don't imply any mechanical impact, synergy or consistency. They debuted in the D&D set, primarily as labels for the choice based cards as a narrative tool. They were decent enough in that specific context, as labeling the choices can allow for natural flowing shorthand on card usage. It would have been better if flavor words were differently formatted so to avoid confusion.
This is the worst implementation of flavor words, on par with labeling the moves on the Street Fighter secret lair cards.
