Too many character specific traits and story elements got carried over so you end up with Saber being some weird mix of the worst parts of Hisui and Arcueid while some characters are a straight downgrade from their counterparts. Also, starting with Tsukihime and going to FSN, it felt like nasu was pulling his punches with the horror elements, even in heaven's feel. Even the ghost story at the start of hollow ataraxia had more bite than most of FSN.I still say Fate is one of the crown jewels of visual novels because its still very competently made and has a lot of thematic meat to it, but to me it'll forever be a more digestible but less refined cousin to tsukihime

Akiha's route exhibits the consequences of obsessing over the past. The first vehicle for this is Satsuki's death, but the point is driven home by the end. There's no good route, only true and "normal", because by refusing to move on you're doomed to failure. In the true end Akiha is pretty much ready to give up the ghost because she's still obsessed with shiki. However, only once she finds shiki's knife and gets the one heartbeat does she have hope, allowing her to move on and have some semblance of a happy life.Hisui's route is a big blur for me so I can't say much, just that it seemed to stress the large impact that can be felt from small acts of kindness like Hisui waking shiki up from his crazy schizo dreams.And then kohaku's route, along with eclipse, wraps everything up and says that life is precious no matter how shitty so don't take it for granted. Shiki returning to the mansion willingly, despite everything we know at that point about the tohno household, parallels his choice to continue to live (and happily at that) despite how shitty life can be, what with his amenia and akiha's strict and overbearing attitude as well as all the senseless tragedy in the world at large.

I’m glad it doesn’t seem to be a ‘completely’ minority opinion that Tsukihime is better than Fate. To be fair to Fate, I wasn’t terribly invested in Arc and Ciel’s routes, but the rest were excellent. So perhaps Sakura’s route, which I’ve yet to start, could propel it above Tsukihime for me. I think Fate’s routes are just a bit too long for their own good, for me. UBW started to feel just awful to read with the whole Archer stuff, it was painfully repetitive in places.

Tsukhime is truly a story about optimism, valuing yourself, appreciating your life, and moving boldly into the future. Death might not be as close to our doors as it is to Shiki’s… but, then again, you never know. That is why the lessons in this story are so applicable. You are alive now, but maybe not tomorrow. So look on your past fondly, smile at yourself in the mirror now and again, and hope lovingly for the future. Shiki is someone who has about a decade or two of life left, and he messes around with two immortal beings in the main routes.The entire Ciel True, Hisui True and Shiki-SHIKI conversation in Kohaku were the best moments.It's mostly the conversation with SHIKI in Kohaku's route, though it's well distributed throughout the whole game. Shiki expresses how out of place he feels, and it's obvious he doesn't necessarily want to connect with his friends at school. It's subtle, but the character arc of him learning that he needs to accept living is definitely there, and is only spelled out in the eclipse. And of course, the idea that society rejects, or is afraid of anyone who is different from the norm is present throughout the whole thing.In the epilogue, Shiki fatefully meets Aoko again and they muse a little bit about old times past. Shiki notes how the past several days/weeks (the span of X route) have been crazy. And some point Aoko tells him that those days will eventually end. Shiki agrees and asks something to the effect of when. The Magus just kind of remains silent and freaking Shiki just tells her that the days were fun, though.

Since this was Shirou's tale of happiness after losing so much, even if Saber and Illya were lost, at least he should let Sakura achieve happiness. And this was the conclusion. Even though Sakura indirectly became a mass murderer, there was no reason to deny her of happiness. I came up with this idea that if one were alive, it was not bad to redeem him/herself while looking forward to happiness. Even though this was hypocrisy, I felt that the story itself strongly demanded this possibility.
