I struggle to understand how did this game get so big in the 90s. I get the FMV appeal but these are some of the worst 3d models of that gen.Random encounters are unbearable too
It's a tranny psi-op, of course.
>>720974742It was many people’s first JRPG. That’s perhaps one of the biggest factors.
Because at the time the game came out even those shitty 3D models were impressive, you retard.
>>720974742Giant marketing effort from Sony paid off
If you dont have nostalgia for these games (I don't) it's almost funny how much better FF6 aged than 7. You could release 6 untouched more or less and it wouldn't feel out of place among modern indie RPGs.But yeah it was pretty much the graphics and FMVs. The models suck in the overworld but the battle models and animations were also seen as very impressive for the time.
>>720974864The same year gave us Tekken 3 and Gran Turismo, which have some of the nicest 3d models on the system nigger
>>720974742>Random encounters are unbearable tooAction RPGs literally did not exist at the time unless you want tot count Symphony Of The Night, this was something players were just willing to put up with.
>>720974742Imagine getting filtered by FFVII.
>>720974964>The same year gave us Tekken 3...in arcades. The console release wasn't until a year later. And it also had 20 characters in a few stages as opposed to being a massive JRPG adventure full of pre-rendered backgrounds, which is a distinction even children could understand.
>>720974934Ironically, I played both VII and X super late (lets say circa 2010), and both games have fantastic atmosphere and vibe, despite all. And they truly do make you feel nostalgia even if you play them for the first time.Unfortunately this feeling is not enough to carry these games. Well, to carry VII at least. X despite its insane encounter ratio is still fun thanks to its snappy and fast combat system.
>>720974934If you don't have nostalgia for the games then 6 is a shitty cave exploration game with a rushed story that falls apart in the second half. It doesn't do anything more interesting than the previous games, it just had better graphics and was easier.
>>720974964why are you comparing those 2 hour playing and bored games to an rpg with an epic story and hundreds of hours play timealso tekken released end of 1998, arcade version was 1997.
>>720974742>some of the worst 3d models of that genTHEY WERETHREEDIMENSIONALMODELS
>>720975275It takes ~20-30 hours to complete Gran Turismo 1 and it has 140 different car models you pleb
>good story>good gameplay>interesting world and locationsSimple as that. Troompers trying to rewrite history yet again. IP ban india + usa please jannies
>>720974742Zoomers will never understand how people at the were so technology obsessed that literally ANY degree of 3D was seen as superior to 2D sprites.Hell I lived through it and I barely understand it
>>720975165This, 6 was inferior to 5 in every way. 10 is the peak of FF.
>>720974934What I think is crazy is the difference in translation quality, 7 feels like an ESL wrote it compared to 6
>>720975004>Action RPGs literally did not exist at the time
>>720974742What you have to understand is that FF at the time was the 90s equivalent to stuff like The Last of Us today. It was "like a movie" and allowed normalfags to be wowed by technology and experience a cinematic story by mashing X and following basic directions
>>720974742It was the first RPG to be really cinematic in its presentation, and the game that introduced a lot of gamers to long-form storytelling in a video game that lets you spend more time with the characters than a movie. It had the side-effect of steering the direction of CRPGs due to its influence on Baldur's Gate (BG2 focused more on companions/relationships after the lead designer played FF7 at the behest of one of Black Isle's producers, and almost every CRPG after was influenced by BG2).People already familiar with JRPGs were already slowly acquainted with long-form storytelling as JRPGs got better over time beyond simple "the king has sent you on a quest"-type design, so 7 felt more natural a fit (though the cinematic presentation was still extremely novel to JRPG fans for the time)
>>720975004The same company made Secrets of mana in 93.
>>720974864The same game has better models during battles.
>>720975763>90s equivalent to stuff like The Last of Us todayOuch that is true though. These and Metal Gear Solid were the games that wowed people with flashy graphics in the 90s.
>>720977392MGS was cinematic in its angles and cutscenes but I think pure interactivity with the world is what made MGS great. All the various ways you can fuck with the environment and enemies - and especially codec calls. Being able to "call" people and talk to them and instigate different dialogues and responses is something no game did since.
The graphics were shit, FF7 release a year after Tomb Raider BUT Final Fantasy was huge.It was a series with intricate worlds, engaging stories and lovely characters worth remembering. FFs were known for pushing narratives and cinematics in videogames to make them true epics and not funny little games. Final Fantasy was already very popular worldwide. FF7 was a full-on AAA release, just as much as a phenomenon as The Last of Us or nuGoW. You have to understand this. All kinds of games were coming out completely fucked by 3D graphics, FF7 wasn't the worst on that front. Plus it turned out to be a great game so the stupid looking models were forgiven by all except the most sweaty nerds.
>>720974742The FMV ads pulled a lot of people in who wouldn’t have played otherwise, but nobody thought the 3D models were impressive at the time. If anything, we played it despite those models, even then. Dunno where all these anons are getting the idea that everyone was wowed by the chibi models. It left an impression because most of us expected to be bored with a turn-based game, but it ended up being really fun and the story was surprisingly interesting, too. I suspect the same thing happens with people who enjoy the game today. They expect garbage, it turns out decent, then it turns out better than decent.
>>720977089
>>720974964>The same year gave us Tekken 3 and Gran Turismo, which have some of the nicest 3d models on the system niggerfighting and racing garbage, which most people don't bother touching because they suck.
>>720974742Is all you faggots do complain?
>>720977701Yeah, man, no one plays those.
>>720977836Yes because the second anon becomes happy then the cocksucking begins and then there's goo all over thread. Lurk and you'll see it happen it's disgusting, anon doesn't know how to be a cool guy.
>>720975961 Exactly this. FF7 filled a void most people didn’t even realize existed at the time. You had games that were fun, sure, but this was one of the first to really try and create an emotional arc for both the world and the characters within it. Combine that with production values that were absolute overkill by '97 standards (3 discs? what sorcery?), and you’ve got a perfect storm. People meme on the lego hands now, but when Aeris died, even the jank couldn't kill the moment. You were invested. That wasn’t common.
>>720974742People were not ADHD graphics whores, and FF7's graphics were gorgeous for the time. 7bwas also the first non-Nintendo FF, the first 3D FF, the first CD FF, and the first non- "fantasy setting " FF.Plus, the very first FF to be released in Europe.
>>720974742they tried to keep the chibi design from the older 2d games instead of going full 3d realism
>>720974742by that time the only RPGs I had played were gargoyle's quest, phantasy star 4 and breath of fire 2. when ff7 came it was something else, there was no comparison. it grabbed eveyone by the balls. I got legit depressed when I finished disc 1, I still remember that afternoon 20 years later. basically you had to be there you little zoomer shit.
>>720974742I never understood why people think FFVII is better than FFX
>>720977701tekken 3 was the shit, stfu
>>720974742Literally me, I laughed my ass off at the giant forearms, then I saw the enemy models and weptI miss the sprites and amano artwork
>>720974742Everything about FF7 was considering "cutting edge" at the time of its release, anon. That's why.
>>720974934I've replayed both recently and I can assure you that 7 has aged just as well as 6. Imo they have both aged like fine wine
>>720974742Because it's a great game and graphics aren't that important, you zoomer clown.
>>720974934that's only because currently half the indie scene is pixel shit. in your mind that style is fresh and new but it's an illusion. basically you're full of shit.
